Cubs | Kyle Schwarber has surgery

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 05:59:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Kyle Schwarber (knee) had surgery on his left knee Tuesday, April 19, and the team said they didn't discover any nerve damage. Schwarber had a "full reconstruction" of his anterior cruciate ligament and a "repair" of his lateral collateral ligament. He hopes to be ready by spring training next year. If all goes well, he'll continue to catch as well as play the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: He's probably going to lose catcher eligibility in most leagues. That's something that could be difficult to reacquire when he's not catching more than a game or two a week. Keep this in mind when next season rolls around as it will affect his value.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber scheduled for surgery

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 15:10:49 -0700

Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (knee) will undergo surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left knee this week, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Schwarber is expected to be ready for spring training next year, and he shouldn't be owned in any seasonal leagues at this point. Jorge Soler has seen the biggest boost in playing time with Schwarber out, and Soler currently sits with seven runs, two home runs, five RBI and a .235/.333/.412 slash line. Expect a slightly better batting average going forward with the same solid counting stats.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber to undergo surgery this month

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 17:38:58 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (knee) will undergo season-ending surgery on the torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left knee within the next one to three weeks. If all goes well, he could be ready to return in time for spring training next year.

Fantasy Tip: OF Jorge Soler will see the biggest increase in playing time as a result of Schwarber's injury and he should be viewed as a solid starting outfield option in mixed leagues. OFs Matt Szczur and Tommy La Stella will see slight upticks in fantasy value in NL-only formats, while Javier Baez should also receive a decent amount of playing time once he returns from the disabled list.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber finished for 2016

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 15:10:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (knee) has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left leg and will not return in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, this was the worst-case outcome for the Cubs and fantasy owners. Unfortunately, Chicago is likely better prepared to handle his absence than virtual players who invested an early-round selection on the slugger. Reiterating a previous tip, Jorge Soler is a starter-worthy outfielder in all fantasy leagues, whereas Matt Szczur and Tommy La Stella will gain value in NL-only formats. Once healthy, Javier Baez should also see an uptick in value and an avenue to more playing time with Schwarber out for the season. Depending on the depth of your keeper/dynasty team and your 2016 goals, it isn't out of the question to keep Schwarber, and he is an obvious DL stash, if possible.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber set for DL stint

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 14:55:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (leg) will be placed on the disabled list Friday, April 8, but the organization has not announced the severity or exact nature of his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should prepare to be without Schwarber for an extended stretch, and then consider it a plus if he only misses a couple of weeks. Jorge Soler receives the biggest fantasy boost and is a legitimate mixed league option for the duration of Schwarber's absence. Matt Szczur and Tommy La Stella are also worth NL-only adds, and when Javier Baez returns, he should also carry more value in all formats. Stay tuned for updates on the severity of Schwarber's injury and a potential return timeline.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber's status to be determined

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 11:46:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber's (knee, ankle) MRI is "more knee-related" and more will be known later on Friday, April 8. He's in a "wait-and-see" mode.

Fantasy Tip: The more that comes out about this, the more likely it seems Schwarber will be looking at an extended absence. He's pretty much already certain for the disabled list, but even if he manages to avoid a lengthy stay there, owners should be rushing to pick up Jorge Soler, who stands to benefit the most as a result of his injury.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber drawing concern

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:41:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (knee, ankle) is drawing "a lot of concern" from the organization over his injury Thursday, April 7, opposite the Arizona Diamondbacks. There is more concern about his knee than his ankle.

Fantasy Tip: A stint on the disabled list is basically certain at this point, but it remains to be seen how much time Schwarber will be out for. He's scheduled for an MRI on Friday, and if it turns out he has to sit out awhile, Jorge Soler would be the biggest beneficiary and is worth adding in all leagues. He has shown significant power potential since first coming up in 2014.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber has sprained ankle

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:13:45 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs C Kyle Schwarber (ankle, knee) was diagnosed with a left ankle sprain after colliding with OF Dexter Fowler Thursday, April 7. Initial X-rays were negative, but he's scheduled to have an MRI exam Friday, April 8. Schwarber also tweaked his left knee. He was on crutches after the game and said his knee and ankle felt "tight" and "sore."

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't look like Schwarber's injuries are serious, but he could still land on the disabled list. Plan for that, and check to see if anyone dropped Jorge Soler in the meantime. He figures to benefit the most and should be picked up in all fantasy formats.

Cubs | Two Cubs could see more time

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 07:35:17 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler and 2B Tommy La Stella could see more time after OF Kyle Schwarber's (ankle) injury, according to manager Joe Maddon. La Stella could see time at third base with 3B Kris Bryant in left field.

Fantasy Tip: Soler figures to benefit significantly, but Maddon will continue his rotation of players. So he might not play every day. If Soler is floating on any waivers, he needs to be picked up universally.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber likely to the DL

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 20:41:17 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs C/OF Kyle Schwarber (ankle) will likely be placed on the disabled list after colliding with OF Dexter Fowler Thursday, April 7.

Fantasy Tip: X-rays were negative, and regardless of the results of Schwarber's upcoming MRI, it sounds like the Cubs will take a cautious approach with their young slugger. Stash him on the DL as soon as he is eligible and pick up the best available replacement.
