Chargers | Branden Oliver tears Achilles' tendon

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 16:13:09 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (Achilles') will miss the season after tearing his Achilles' against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Tough break for the Chargers' No. 3 back, who has filled admirably well at times during his first two years in San Diego. His injury likely locks in Dreamius Smith into a roster spot as the third back behind Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead, while fellow first-year player Kenneth Farrow's chances at making the final 53 increase substantially as well.

Chargers | Torn ACL feared for Branden Oliver

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 12:23:15 -0700

It is believed that San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (Achilles') tore his Achilles' tendon based on initial tests, according to a source. He will undergo more tests before the diagnosis is official.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver had an important role despite being San Diego's No. 3 running back. Assuming he did suffer a torn Achilles', Danny Woodhead and Melvin Gordon would likely be more involved. No one else in the backfield has much fantasy relevance. Gordon and Woodhead are both RB2 considerations in standard leagues and PPR leagues, respectively.

Chargers | Branden Oliver leaves game

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 11:32:54 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (Achilles') suffered an Achilles' tendon injury during the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Aug. 28, and will not return.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to find out the severity of the injury. Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead would receive more playing time if Oliver is out for an extended period of time. Gordon should receive most of the carries this season and can be a No. 2 running back in fantasy leagues. Woodhead will likely be more involved in the passing game and will be a No. 2 or No. 3 back in point-per-reception leagues.

Chargers | Branden Oliver looking good

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:49:55 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) practiced the way he played before his toe injury Wednesday, June 15, according to The San Diego Tribune's Tom Krasovic.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver figures to be the third man down on the Chargers' running back totem pole, but an injury could quickly catapult him into greater fantasy relevance. At this point, though, he's only a deep flier in fantasy drafts.

Chargers | Branden Oliver looking good

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 15:15:37 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) was able to make cuts during organized team activities Monday, June 6, and does not appear to be bothered by the toe injury that ended his 2015 season early.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver should be part of a committee at running back this season, but Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead likely will receive touches during games. He should be involved in the running and passing game in 2016 but may not be a great fantasy option if he sees limited touches.

Chargers | Chargers leaning towards RB committee

Fri, 27 May 2016 11:38:39 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will each be "used to their strengths" in the upcoming season in helping comprise a committee, according to running backs coach Ollie Wilson. "Those guys can do a lot of different things and they have all bought in to working together and having their own role instead of being (angry) not getting all the touches," he said. "They understand we don't have just one starter here. They are all part of our scheme and system."

Fantasy Tip: As proven last year, the Chargers can make this work for all involved. Woodhead, for instance, is as good as anyone in catching passes out of the backfield, and is capable of running all sorts of routes. He's also serviceable in goal-line situations, which arguably makes him the most valuable of all Chargers running backs. Gordon probably has the highest ceiling and will still see a lot of work, though this may hinder his overall outlook, considering the hype he had as a rookie last year. Oliver, meanwhile, should also see some usage in both rush attempts and receiving targets.

Chargers | San Diego to use all RBs

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:46:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive most of the carries in 2016 if he is able to stay healthy. Gordon rushed for only 641 yards and zero touchdowns in 2015 but is coming off microfracture surgery, which makes him a risky No. 2 or No. 3 back for owners. Woodhead will be involved in the running and passing game and will be valuable in all fantasy leagues. Oliver should see playing time in each game but will not be a strong option.

Chargers | Branden Oliver placed on IR

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 13:12:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead will continue to be the Chargers' primary running backs. Donald Brown should now fill in as San Diego's No. 3 running back, but his fantasy value is minimal right now.

Chargers | Donald Brown staying put

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:22:52 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown had interested teams calling about him, but he won't be traded after RB Branden Oliver (toe) was injured.

Fantasy Tip: Brown ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is merely depth and has no FantasyScore viability right now.

Chargers | Branden Oliver in walking boot

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 16:12:37 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) is wearing a walking boot and is using crutches because of a turf toe injury. He is not sure if he will be able to play in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor Oliver's practice participation during the week to see if he can play in Week 9. Oliver has been sharing snaps with Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead but received only four carries in the last game. Owners may want to look for other options even if Oliver is able to play.
