Chargers | Chargers leaning towards RB committee

Fri, 27 May 2016 11:38:39 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will each be "used to their strengths" in the upcoming season in helping comprise a committee, according to running backs coach Ollie Wilson. "Those guys can do a lot of different things and they have all bought in to working together and having their own role instead of being (angry) not getting all the touches," he said. "They understand we don't have just one starter here. They are all part of our scheme and system."

Fantasy Tip: As proven last year, the Chargers can make this work for all involved. Woodhead, for instance, is as good as anyone in catching passes out of the backfield, and is capable of running all sorts of routes. He's also serviceable in goal-line situations, which arguably makes him the most valuable of all Chargers running backs. Gordon probably has the highest ceiling and will still see a lot of work, though this may hinder his overall outlook, considering the hype he had as a rookie last year. Oliver, meanwhile, should also see some usage in both rush attempts and receiving targets.

Chargers | San Diego to use all RBs

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:46:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive most of the carries in 2016 if he is able to stay healthy. Gordon rushed for only 641 yards and zero touchdowns in 2015 but is coming off microfracture surgery, which makes him a risky No. 2 or No. 3 back for owners. Woodhead will be involved in the running and passing game and will be valuable in all fantasy leagues. Oliver should see playing time in each game but will not be a strong option.

Chargers | Branden Oliver placed on IR

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 13:12:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead will continue to be the Chargers' primary running backs. Donald Brown should now fill in as San Diego's No. 3 running back, but his fantasy value is minimal right now.

Chargers | Donald Brown staying put

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:22:52 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown had interested teams calling about him, but he won't be traded after RB Branden Oliver (toe) was injured.

Fantasy Tip: Brown ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is merely depth and has no FantasyScore viability right now.

Chargers | Branden Oliver in walking boot

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 16:12:37 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) is wearing a walking boot and is using crutches because of a turf toe injury. He is not sure if he will be able to play in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor Oliver's practice participation during the week to see if he can play in Week 9. Oliver has been sharing snaps with Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead but received only four carries in the last game. Owners may want to look for other options even if Oliver is able to play.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon will play in Week 7

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 11:54:05 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (ankle) is officially active for the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders, but RB Branden Oliver is still expected to receive a larger role on offense.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) is active for the game but there is a good chance he sees limited playing time because of the ankle injury. Owners probably should look for other options to use. Oliver ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) could be a cheaper option on FantasyScore but is a risky option since his role is uncertain at this point.

Chargers | Branden Oliver may be more involved

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 08:20:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver likely will have a bigger role on offense against the Oakland Raiders in Week 7 with RB Melvin Gordon (ankle) not expected to play.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) probably will receive a majority of the carries if Gordon is inactive for the game. Oliver could be a solid option on FantasyScore because of his low price.

Chargers | Branden Oliver may return punts

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 07:10:36 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver likely will be the punt returner against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 since WR Jacoby Jones (ankle) is listed as doubtful for the game.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) likely will receive a similar role in the offense in Week 2 despite his added responsibilities. He recorded only 21 total yards in the team's Week 1 game and is not a great option on FantasyScore.

Chargers | San Diego to use committee at RB

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:07:41 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will be part of a committee at running back this season, according to QB Philip Rivers. "As Coach has always said I'm not saying anything out of the blue it's a running back by committee crew," Rivers said. "It's going to be a team effort in that bunch. We're going to need all of them to carry the load in the run game and to catch the ball out of the backfield."

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive a majority of carries this season, but all four running backs could receive snaps during games. Gordon could be a middle-round option in most leagues, while Woodhead would be more valuable in point-per-reception leagues since he will be more involved in the passing game. Oliver and Brown probably will not have much value.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to be eased in?

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 19:59:11 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon isn't going to be expected to be an every-down back as a rookie, and RB Danny Woodhead and RB Branden Oliver will still have roles.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon has the skills to play all three downs, but he likely won't be a bell-cow back for the Chargers from Day 1. He should still be considered the top fantasy option in San Diego's backfield, but he should be drafted as a mid-level RB2 with plenty of upside.
