Chargers | San Diego struggling with run game

Tue, 04 Nov 2014 15:11:01 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver recently acknowledged the team's lack of success on the ground this year. Oliver said the team needs to stick together and keep playing with each other. The Chargers are currently one of four teams averaging fewer than 90 rushing yards per game.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Mathews and Donald Brown have been dealing with injuries while Oliver has been the main running back in their absences. The team is on a bye this week, with the prospect of Mathews possibly returning and taking over the starting role afterwards.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews likely to regain role

Mon, 03 Nov 2014 07:34:36 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is all but assured to regain his role as the featured back when he returns. RB Branden Oliver has rushed 32 times for 49 yards in the last two games.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will be a flex option upon return, but he doesn't play on third downs often. Oliver will likely shift into the third down role, which really hurts his value. Donald Brown is likely to continue to see sparse work.

Chargers | Ronnie Brown could play in Week 6

Thu, 09 Oct 2014 09:34:55 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown (concussion) could have a role in the passing game if he is cleared to play in Week 6. RB Branden Oliver likely will receive most of the carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Brown would be limited if he is active for the game, so owners may want to avoid using him until he is completely healthy. Oliver probably will receive most of the work during the game and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore at $5,900.

Chargers | Branden Oliver has an opening

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 05:39:31 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver will likely have a week or two with the backfield mostly to himself after RB Donald Brown (concussion) suffered a concussion in Week 5. Oliver rushed 19 times for 114 yards and a touchdown Sunday, Oct. 5, and caught four passes for 68 yards and another score.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver is sure to be a hot waiver wire topic this week and could be a good play on FantasyScore in the interim.

Chargers | Chargers won't give up on run game

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 18:14:14 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown and RB Branden Oliver combined for 42 yards on 29 carries in Week 4, and although head coach Mike McCoy bashed the running game during a press conference Monday, Sept. 29, he also said that the team is committed to improving it. "We're going to be forced to run it more down the road, and we're going to run the football," McCoy said. "So we'll be successful, we just have to do a better job doing it. You've got to have balance without a doubt."

Fantasy Tip: While the Chargers aren't going to abandon the run game, but until things begin to turn around, Brown and Oliver probably aren't worth gambling on at FantasyScore, especially in Week 5 against the Jets and their top-ranked run defense.

Chargers | Branden Oliver may see more time

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:47:56 -0700

With injuries to both RB Ryan Mathews (knee) and Danny Woodhead (ankle/leg), RB Branden Oliver could see more playing time going forward with the San Diego Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver would be a clear No. 2 to Donald Brown assuming Mathews is out for a while. Woodhead may be done for the season, so owners wanting a backup for Brown should consider Oliver as a handcuff.

Chargers | Chargers want Donald Brown fresh

Sat, 20 Sep 2014 17:51:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown will not return in kicks in Week 3 because the team wants to keep him fresh for his expanded role in the backfield. RB Branden Oliver will return kicks in Brown's place.

Fantasy Tip: Brown was signed in the offseason in case Ryan Matthews suffered an injury, and relieving him of return duties reaffirms the fact that Brown will have a big role in the offense while Matthews is out. His $4,600 salary (9.2% of cap) at FantasyScore makes him very affordable, but with the Chargers facing a Bills defense that has been beaten up by the pass and stout against the run, Brown could struggle to make a significant impact in Week 3.
