Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the team is continuing to look for starting pitching even after the acquisition of SP Ross Detwiler. "We've got a number of internal options coming to compete for a spot, all of them that we like," Daniels said. "But you can never have enough and we'll continue having conversations about adding another starter." The Rangers already have SPs Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, Colby Lewis, Detwiler, Nick Martinez and Nick Tepesch on their roster and minor league SPs Alex Gonzalez and Luke Jackson could also compete for a job during spring training.

The Texas Rangers placed SP Nick Martinez (side) on the 15-day disabled list with pain in his left side Tuesday, July 8, and recalled P Phillip Irwin from the minors in a corresponding move. The DL stint is retroactive to July 2.

Fantasy Tip: It's likely just a spot start for Irwin. He can be ignored in mostly all formats.

Texas Rangers SP Joe Saunders (ankle) said he wants to be a starter when he returns to the majors after throwing 66 pitches in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco Tuesday, May 6. Saunders said he's not interested in long relief. "For me it's all about starting and helping this team win games as a starter," said Saunders, who suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle in Tampa Bay in April when he was hit by line drive off the bat of Evan Longoria. "It's what I signed to do and what they signed me to do." RP Nick Martinez is the current long reliever, but the team would rather see him start every five days in the minors.
