Rangers | Nick Martinez to start Saturday

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 18:14:18 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez will start against the Minnesota Twins Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is 1-2 with a 6.45 ERA in six games (four starts) and came close to losing his spot in the starting rotation following a horrendous start against the Boston Red Sox Monday, July 4. He is not a recommended option in any fantasy format and could be replaced in the rotation by SP Kyle Lohse if he has another disappointing outing.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin wins final rotation spot?

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:51:01 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin appears to have won the battle for the fifth starting spot over SP Nick Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: It isn't technically official just yet, so don't get your hopes up. Tommy John surgery and shoulder tendonitis wiped out Griffin's last two years, so even though he's on the verge of winning a job, he should really only be scooped up in AL leagues by the desperate.

Rangers | Nick Martinez stakes his claim

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 23:34:31 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez will start the Cactus League spring game Thursday, March 10, against the Chicago White Sox. He is in the battle for one of two open rotation spots with the Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez spun two scoreless innings in his first spring outing, including five groundball outs. He has plenty of experience and is worth a look as a late-round grab in AL-only fantasy drafts if he can secure a job sooner rather than later.

Rangers | No. 5 job in Texas up for grabs

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:37:24 -0800

Texas Rangers SPs Jeremy Guthrie and Nick Tepesch are among the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring along with SPs Chi Chi Gonzalez, A.J. Griffin, Nick Martinez, Cesar Ramos and Anthony Ranaudo.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 5 rotation spot will be worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues, while the losers are headed to the bullpen or minors and should be avoided for now.

Rangers | Cole Hamels on track for Monday

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 10:09:46 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (groin) could be ready to return for a start against the Seattle Mariners Monday, Aug. 17. He will test his sore left groin during a bullpen session Saturday, Aug. 15. SP Chi Chi Gonzalez is starting in place of Hamels Thursday, Aug. 13, and he has a chance to stick in the rotation after SP Nick Martinez was optioned to the minors.

Fantasy Tip: You may be hesitant to use Hamels ($8,600, 17.2% of cap) on FantasyScore coming off an injury and two poor outings in his first two starts with his new team. The matchup against Seattle isn't a bad one, though, and Hamels should turn things around with Texas to finish out the year.

Rangers | Nick Martinez has happy birthday

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 04:54:37 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez picked up the win on his 25th birthday as he allowed one run and one hit in five innings Wednesday, Aug. 5. The Rangers beat the Houston Astros, 4-3, to complete a three-game sweep.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) hit a rough patch in the middle of the season but appears to have adjusted nicely. Houston's lineup is among the toughest in baseball, so Martinez raised his game a notch with this performance. Keep an eye on his matchups but note that he is getting better.

Rangers | Nick Martinez to work on birthday

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 22:47:09 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez is scheduled to start Wednesday, Aug. 5, on his 25th birthday against the Houston Astros. He is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five career starts against the Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,800) posted a quality start last time out against San Francisco, but he needs to pitch with more consistency before he can be trusted in FantasyScore.

Rangers | Nick Martinez's hot start is long gone

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 18:32:07 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez has a 5.30 ERA since he allowed just one run in 26 innings in March and April.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) capped off his slide by allowed seven earned runs in just three innings Monday, July 20. FantasyScore owners need to look elsewhere whenever Martinez is on the mound.

Rangers | Nick Martinez recalled

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 14:37:54 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez was recalled from Class AAA Round Rock Monday, July 20, and will be the starting pitcher Monday. The team also optioned SP Anthony Ranaudo to Class AAA Round Rock.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez returns to the team after a few weeks in the minor leagues and could receive a few starts. Owners may want to see Martinez pitch in a game or two before considering him an option in their lineups.

Rangers | Wandy Rodriguez drawing interest

Thu, 16 Jul 2015 16:50:34 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Wandy Rodriguez is drawing interest from teams as the trade deadline nears. Interested teams view Rodriguez as a fallback option if they aren't able to land a big-name starting pitcher. SPs Nick Martinez or Chi Chi Gonzalez could move back into the rotation if Rodriguez is dealt away.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has been a nice surprise for Texas (6-4, 4.07 ERA, 1.45 WHIP), but he's still only a fantasy commodity in very deep mixed and AL-only leagues. However, a trade out of Texas to a more pitcher-friendly home park could make him more attractive.
