Phillies | David Buchanan to start Saturday

Thu, 22 May 2014 13:14:57 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP David Buchanan will be called up to take the start Saturday, May 24.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if Buchanan will remain in the rotation until Cliff Lee (elbow) is ready to return, but he'll probably at least audition for the spot. He's strictly an NL-only commodity to start with, and his matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend isn't too enticing.

Phillies | David Buchanan likely to enter rotation

Wed, 21 May 2014 11:07:58 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP David Buchanan is "the most likely choice" to replace SP Cliff Lee (elbow) in the starting rotation, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Amaro said SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is not yet a candidate to come up from the minors since he's been on the disabled list in the minors since March and is currently rehabbing with Single-A Clearwater. SP Jesse Biddle is also "not ready to pitch in the big leagues," according to Amaro.

Phillies | Unsure how long Cliff Lee will be out

Wed, 21 May 2014 10:59:26 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team is unsure how long SP Cliff Lee (elbow) will be out. "We just don't know yet," Amaro said. "It could be two weeks. It could be three weeks. It could be four weeks. Who knows? It could be 30 weeks. We think it will be shorter. It's a pretty mild strain. ... We just have to be really cautious with him." Lee was diagnosed with a Grade1/Grade 2 strain of his left elbow Tuesday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: Lee has never gone to the DL because of an arm injury, so he's sorta in uncharted territory in that aspect. Expect an absence longer than 15 days if you're planning for his return. NL-only leaguers looking for pitching should zero in on David Buchanan, who is the likely replacement.

Phillies | Jonathan Pettibone expected to start Saturday

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 14:13:38 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Jonathan Pettibone is expected to be called up to make the start Saturday, April 12. SP David Buchanan was eliminated from contention when he threw 93 pitches for Triple-A Lehigh Valley Tuesday, April 8. Manager Ryne Sandberg said Buchanan would not start on short rest. The other option would be P Jeff Manship, who is the long man in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: If Pettibone is the choice, he may only be used for two starts, depending on the health of Cole Hamels (shoulder). That makes Pettibone strictly an option for NL-only leaguers looking for innings.

Phillies | Two main options for Saturday start

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 15:18:30 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SPs Jonathan Pettibone and David Buchanan are the main candidates to make the start against the Miami Marlins Saturday, April 12, although RP Jeff Manship also has some starting experience. Pettibone and Buchanan are both at Triple-A Lehigh Valley right now. Buchanan could be pitching on short rest, since he's scheduled to go Tuesday, April 8, in the minors. Pettibone is on the 40-man roster while Buchanan is not.

Fantasy Tip: Pettibone would be the more obvious candidate, especially since he had experience pitching in the rotation last year. Neither pitcher will be of much use in fantasy leagues, however.
