Braves | Matt Wisler starting Thursday

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 16:49:07 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler will start against the Washington Nationals Thursday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) had an impressive debut start, but it came against the reeling New York Mets. Thursday, he draws the first-place Nationals, and Wisler should be viewed as nothing more than a flier No. 2 starter by FantasyScore players. Should the prospect emerge with another solid start, he would be worthy of a speculative grab in all deep formats, especially for those owners searching for pitching help.

Braves | Matt Wisler solid in debut

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 19:36:02 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed one run on six hits over eight innings to pick up a win over the New York Mets in his major league debut Friday, June 19. He struck out two and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler was San Diego's top prospect before being shipped to Atlanta as part of the Craig Kimbrel trade, and he didn't disappoint in his debut. Assuming the Braves keep him in the rotation, he is worth keeping an eye on and could be a useful sleeper at FantasyScore once he is added to the player pool.

Braves | Matt Wisler to start Friday

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 05:37:11 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler will be called up from Class AAA Gwinnett Friday, June 19, and will start against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler is 3-4 with a 4.29 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP at Gwinnett. He has 49 K's and 13 walks in 65 innings. His numbers won't wow you, but he's a high-end prospect. Give him a start or two to see what he has before using him on FantasyScore.

Braves | ATL acquires Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:34:34 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Carlos Quentin and OF Cameron Maybin were traded to the Atlanta Braves in a deal that includes SP Matt Wisler. The Padres received OF Melvin Upton Jr. and RP Craig Kimbrel back in return.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, the top closer in baseball, didn't figure into the Braves' plans so he is headed to San Diego, where he will immediately fit into the roster and greatly improve the Padres bullpen. Quentin ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) and Maybin ($2,000, 4% of cap) will soak up some at-bats in Atlanta, but that's about it. Jonny Gomes is in left and Eric Young Jr. is in center for the time being, so Quentin and Maybin may see some time in the mix.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton acquired by SD

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:21:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel was traded to the San Diego Padres in a deal that also included OF Melvin Upton Jr. The Padres sent OF Carlos Quentin, OF Cameron Maybin, SP Matt Wisler and the 41st draft pick overall to the Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, one of the top fantasy closers regardless of uniform, should receive more save chances as he joins what should be a more competitive club than Atlanta. Upton (foot) is currently out and won't rejoin the FantasyScore pool for at least a month.

Padres | Two favorites for SD's No. 5 spot

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 15:27:40 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne are "maybe out there a touch" in the race for the No. 5 starting rotation spot early in spring, according to manager Bud Black. Morrow opted to sign with San Diego because they were going to give him a legitimate rotation shot, instead of pitching in relief. SPs Robbie Erlin and Matt Wisler are other candidates for the job.

Fantasy Tip: Even at age 30 with a lengthy injury history, Morrow seems like the more intriguing option here. Whoever wins the No. 5 spot in SD will be worth a dart throw at the tail end of deep mixed league drafts. At the very least, the winner of this competition should be owned in all NL-only leagues and could be a very valuable daily piece, especially when starting games at Petco.
