Braves | Matt Wisler has solid outing

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 16:42:17 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, April 21. He struck out six batters and walked two during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler struggled a bit in his first two starts when he allowed seven runs in 12 2/3 innings but bounced back against the Dodgers. He scheduled to face the Boston Red Sox in his next start and probably should be avoided in most leagues because of the matchup.

Braves | Matt Wisler's changeup a focus

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 17:43:06 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler worked on his changeup in the offseason with former SP Tom Glavine, and Wisler's changeup is expected to be a big part of his arsenal. He needed only 17 pitches in two scoreless innings in his spring debut Tuesday, March 8, and his changeup is expected to be slower than it was last season. Wisler had a 2.21 ERA and .219 opponent's average against in his last six games.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler may have more promise with a new pitch, but his command and control are shaky right now, so you'll need to be patient with him. Keep an eye on how he fares the rest of spring and early in the regular season.

Braves | Atlanta's rotation competition

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 14:57:23 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran is expected to make his third straight Opening Day start this year, followed by SPs Bud Norris and Matt Wisler. SPs Williams Perez and Manny Banuelos are the top candidates for the final two rotation spots, along with SPs Aaron Blair, Sean Newcomb, Tyrell Jenkins and Lucas Sims. SPs Kyle Kendrick or Jhoulys Chacin are veterans who might make more sense.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are clearly in rebuilding mode, and this is one of the weaker starting rotations in the bigs to begin the year. Teheran has value as a sleeper in mixed leagues, but all the others have major questions and are better left to those in NL-only leagues.

Braves | ATL has two rotation spots up for grabs

Sat, 20 Feb 2016 12:05:08 -0800

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said two spots in the starting rotation will be up for grabs during spring training. SPs Julio Teheran, Matt Wisler and Bud Norris are likely to fill three of the rotation spots.

Fantasy Tip: The battle for the final two spots is expected to include non-roster invitees such as Kyle Kendrick and Jhoulys Chacin, as well as Williams Perez, Mike Foltynewicz and Manny Banuelos. Prospects such as Sean Newcomb, Aaron Blair, Chris Ellis and Lucas Sims could also receive consideration. Teheran and Wisler could be available in the later rounds of drafts for NL-only and deep mixed leagues, while the other pitchers mentioned are likely to go undrafted.

Braves | Matt Wisler allows four hits in Game 2 of doubleheader

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 15:52:09 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed four hits in over eight innings of work in Game 2 of a doubleheader Sunday, Oct. 4, in a 2-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) improved to 8-8 and put himself in solid contention for a possible 2016 rotation spot. He was facing a patchwork Cardinals lineup, but Wisler still had a strong outing that can't be denied.

Nationals | Yunel Escobar, Michael Taylor resting

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 14:02:58 -0700

Washington Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar and OF Michael Taylor are both resting Tuesday, Sept. 29, against the Atlanta Braves. SS Trea Turner and OF Matt den Dekker are in the lineup, with Turner hitting second and den Dekker hitting seventh against Braves SP Matt Wisler.

Fantasy Tip: Escobar ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) and Taylor ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) appear to be getting normal nights off from the lineup, and this is Escobar's second day off in a row. Escobar is hitting .125 against Wisler and Taylor is a .200 career hitter. Turner ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) could be a deep sleeper entering 2016, as the Nationals are high enough on him to let Ian Desmond walk via free agency.

Braves | Matt Wisler struggles against lefty bats

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 05:04:18 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler has allowed a .355/.446/.617 slash line to left handed batters through his 18 games this season. Wisler starts against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players cannot start Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) with confidence Tuesday, and he should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation start in NL-only and cavernous mixed seasonal leagues, too. He has solid pedigree and upside for 2016, but at this stage of his career, he is clearly still fine-tuning his craft.

Mets | Travis d'Arnaud not starting Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 13:22:41 -0700

New York Mets C Travis d'Arnaud is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 22, against the Atlanta Braves. C Kevin Plawecki is in the lineup and he will hit eighth against Braves SP Matt Wisler.

Fantasy Tip: It appears to be a normal off night for d'Arnaud ($4,300, 8.6% of cap), who is hitting .053 in the last week. Plawecki ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) has two hits in two at-bats against Wisler. That's a small sample size, but it's worth the risk if you want to save some salary cap room.

Braves | Matt Wisler suffers loss Thursday

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 19:31:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler (5-8) allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday, Sept. 17, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) fell to 0-3 through four starts during the month of September, with a 7.47 ERA over 15 2/3 innings. His next scheduled start will come against the New York Mets Tuesday, Sept. 22, and FantasyScore owners should avoid using him.

Braves | Manny Banuelos' season likely over

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 15:17:06 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) will have his sore pitching elbow looked at by Dr. James Andrews again next week. Andrews performed Tommy John surgery on Banuelos back in 2012. Banuelos will be scratched from his start Friday, Sept. 11, against the New York Mets. Atlanta is cautiously optimistic that he doesn't have anything more serious than a bone chip and that he won't need surgery, but he's still likely to be shut down for the rest of the year as a precaution, regardless of what Andrews says next week. SP Matt Wisler is the leading candidate to take Banuelos' rotation spot and start Friday against the Mets. Ps Edwin Jackson and Sugar Ray Marimon are other possibilities, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Banuelos said he had been pitching with pain in his elbow for some time but that it wasn't anything serious.

Fantasy Tip: You can now drop Banuelos in any league that you still owned him. Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) isn't recommended for a start in your lineup on FantasyScore if he gets the nod against the Mets, who have been one of the hotter offensive clubs in the second half.
