Braves | Matt Wisler shining in May

Thu, 26 May 2016 11:18:35 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA with a .204 opponent's average against and six walks and 20 strikeouts in 30 innings this month. He has allowed just one home run.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler, who has quietly dropped his season ERA to 2.93, is likely one of the more underrated fantasy starters out there because of the team he pitches for. His 6.3 K/9 won't endear him to many, but in deeper mixed leagues he should be owned as he continues to develop into a quality hurler.

Braves | Matt Wisler solid against Phils Friday

Fri, 20 May 2016 19:48:21 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler (2-3) allowed one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings in a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, May 20, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler has tossed quality starts in six of his last seven outings and would have had a much better record if he had decent run support. He has a very favorable matchup for his next outing against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 26, and is worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy contests.

Braves | Matt Wisler adds to impressive run

Sun, 15 May 2016 18:21:50 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out seven over 7 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, May 15, and he has a 2.74 ERA over his last 12 starts dating back to last September.

Fantasy Tip: A lack of run support has made wins tough to come by, but his solid ERA and other ratios make him a worthwhile No. 4 or 5 starter in mixed formats.

Braves | Matt Wisler solid in setback

Tue, 10 May 2016 20:22:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed three earned runs, eight hits and two walks over eight innings in a loss Tuesday, May 10, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler turned in his best performance of the season at home, as he lowered his ERA to 4.42 at Turner Field. He has a 1.80 ERA in three appearances (two starts) on the road, and that's good news for fantasy owners since his next start is set for Sunday in Kansas City against former Braves starter Kris Medlen.

Braves | Matt Wisler shuts down New York

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:37:52 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed just one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a win against the New York Mets Tuesday, May 3. He is 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA in four starts over 29 innings against the Mets in his career.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler seems to have the number of the Mets for whatever reason. Remember that next time he works against the Mets for DFS purposes.

Braves | Matt Wisler to start Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 08:07:27 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler will start against the New York Mets Monday, May 2. He was originally scheduled to face the Chicago Cubs Sunday, May 1, but SP Julio Teheran will pitch instead, after his start was rained out Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in five appearances (four starts) this year and is not a recommended fantasy option. SP Mike Foltynewicz, who is currently with Class AAA Gwinnett, had been under consideration to make the start Monday, before Saturday's rainout altered the team's pitching plans. The Braves could use a four-man rotation for the immediate future because they have just six games over the next eight days or they could opt to bring up Foltynewicz later this week to give their current rotation members extra rest. Stay tuned to see how this situation is resolved.

Braves | Matt Wisler has solid outing

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 16:42:17 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, April 21. He struck out six batters and walked two during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler struggled a bit in his first two starts when he allowed seven runs in 12 2/3 innings but bounced back against the Dodgers. He scheduled to face the Boston Red Sox in his next start and probably should be avoided in most leagues because of the matchup.

Braves | Matt Wisler's changeup a focus

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 17:43:06 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler worked on his changeup in the offseason with former SP Tom Glavine, and Wisler's changeup is expected to be a big part of his arsenal. He needed only 17 pitches in two scoreless innings in his spring debut Tuesday, March 8, and his changeup is expected to be slower than it was last season. Wisler had a 2.21 ERA and .219 opponent's average against in his last six games.

Fantasy Tip: Wisler may have more promise with a new pitch, but his command and control are shaky right now, so you'll need to be patient with him. Keep an eye on how he fares the rest of spring and early in the regular season.

Braves | Atlanta's rotation competition

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 14:57:23 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran is expected to make his third straight Opening Day start this year, followed by SPs Bud Norris and Matt Wisler. SPs Williams Perez and Manny Banuelos are the top candidates for the final two rotation spots, along with SPs Aaron Blair, Sean Newcomb, Tyrell Jenkins and Lucas Sims. SPs Kyle Kendrick or Jhoulys Chacin are veterans who might make more sense.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are clearly in rebuilding mode, and this is one of the weaker starting rotations in the bigs to begin the year. Teheran has value as a sleeper in mixed leagues, but all the others have major questions and are better left to those in NL-only leagues.

Braves | ATL has two rotation spots up for grabs

Sat, 20 Feb 2016 12:05:08 -0800

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said two spots in the starting rotation will be up for grabs during spring training. SPs Julio Teheran, Matt Wisler and Bud Norris are likely to fill three of the rotation spots.

Fantasy Tip: The battle for the final two spots is expected to include non-roster invitees such as Kyle Kendrick and Jhoulys Chacin, as well as Williams Perez, Mike Foltynewicz and Manny Banuelos. Prospects such as Sean Newcomb, Aaron Blair, Chris Ellis and Lucas Sims could also receive consideration. Teheran and Wisler could be available in the later rounds of drafts for NL-only and deep mixed leagues, while the other pitchers mentioned are likely to go undrafted.
