Falcons | Devonta Freeman enters camp the starter

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 07:18:11 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman enters training camp ahead of RB Tevin Coleman on the depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Coleman was slowed late in minicamp by a groin injury, and the team said they'll use Freeman in multiple ways - including as a receiver. Coleman could make it interesting in camp, but for now Freeman is a high-end RB3 and Coleman is a low-end RB3.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman to be versatile

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 10:09:37 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman will be used in a lot of different ways, including as a receiver, according to head coach Dan Quinn. "I knew Devonta had terrific hands, but I probably didn't appreciate the good route-running ability coming out of Florida State and the development he made with (former running backs coach) Gerald (Brown) and the guys here last year. He can really run routes."

Fantasy Tip: Freeman appears to be ahead of Tevin Coleman in the backfield and is a high-end RB3 with upside if his pace continues.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman starts as top RB

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 16:41:18 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman began minicamp as the starting running back.

Fantasy Tip: Tevin Coleman figures to be closely behind Freeman throughout the offseason and could eventually overtake him as the starting running back. Whoever starts will probably share plenty of touches with the other in what could very well end up turning into a backfield committee between the two. Coleman has more upside and should be taken as a high-end RB3, while Freeman should be drafted as a low-end RB3.

Falcons | Atlanta's RBs to be busy?

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 16:20:28 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman and RB Devonta Freeman are set to open training camp as the primary ball-carriers, and WR Roddy White said he expects the offense to run the ball a lot more in 2015. "I just don't think we're going to go out there and throw it 30, 40 times a game like we did in the past," White said. "I'm not saying that we didn't like that, but it's going to be different. We have to get back to our old (style) where we run the football. Play-action passes and convert on third downs."

Fantasy Tip: Although new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan may want to run the ball more, Atlanta's best weapons are still in the passing game. Coleman and Freeman should both see some carries this year, but until a pecking order is established, both players should be considered mid-round picks in fantasy drafts.

Falcons | Atlanta has competition at running back

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 14:26:42 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman will fight for the starting running back position this offseason, as head coach Dan Quinn said they are both battling for it. Quinn added that it's currently difficult to predict how the situation will play out. Freeman is expected to be the No. 1 running back at least until Coleman acclimates to the Falcons and the professional level.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Freeman being the No. 1 back at present, Coleman is expected to his fair share of carries and at least split time with Freeman as part of a committee, if not overtake Freeman for the starting role. Both should be considered in RB3 territory, with Coleman possessing a little more upside.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman works with starters

Tue, 26 May 2015 18:29:08 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman will compete with Tevin Coleman for the starting running back job during training camp. Both running backs probably will receive decent playing time during the season. Owners should consider the winner of the competition as a middle-round pick in drafts.

Falcons | Two ATL backs could split carries

Sun, 24 May 2015 13:19:46 -0700

The Atlanta Falcons could use a two-back system this season where RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman wind up receiving equal reps.

Fantasy Tip: From a fantasy football standpoint, both running backs currently project to be RB3s, although they will each receive an equal opportunity to run away with the job during training camp. Freeman is considered to have a slight edge in the pass-catching department, while both players have demonstrated the ability to consistently block during pass protection.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman a favorite to start?

Tue, 05 May 2015 11:31:52 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman could see the majority of work in the Falcons' backfield in 2015, with Devonta Freeman closely behind him, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Fantasy Tip: Ledbetter has Coleman and Freeman listed as 1A and 1B, respectively, so it could very well be the typical running back by committee in Atlanta. As it stands, both are probably closer to low-end RB3 territory.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman to be full-time back?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 11:06:18 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman could be the full-time back in new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme next season, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff. "My first impression of him is that you can feel the quickness. In our outside-zone-system, I feel like this is tailor-made for a guy who can really explode off the edge," head coach Dan Quinn said.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman could excel in this new offensive running scheme under Shanahan, and impending free-agent backs Antone Smith and Jacquizz Rodgers could land elsewhere. Heading into 2015 fantasy football drafts, Freeman could be an excellent choice as your No. 2 RB.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman built for scheme

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 05:36:27 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman fits well in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme, according to head coach Dan Quinn. "My first impression: I can feel the quickness," Quinn said of Freeman. "In our outside zone scheme I thought this is tailor-made for a guy who can really explode off the edge. I love this guy's competitive spirit." General manager Thomas Dimitroff expressed confidence Freeman could hold up as the lead back.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman will be a popular pick to click in 2015, and you may have to take him with the mid-to-low RB2's to secure him. He's a bit of an unknown, but that's the game you play with running backs.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman in favor with new OC?

Tue, 10 Feb 2015 14:46:06 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman caught new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's eye coming out of college, though Shanahan is still evaluating the offensive personnel in Atlanta.

Fantasy Tip: With Steven Jackson likely leaving town, that could pave the way for Freeman to be the Falcons' new lead running back, with Jacquizz Rodgers possibly playing a complementary role if he stays with the team. Freeman's prospects seem to be on the rise for 2015.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman to see work

Sun, 28 Dec 2014 06:24:20 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman is likely to see a decent workload Sunday, Dec. 28, with RB Steven Jackson (quadriceps) likely out for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman is a solid flex option this week on FantasyScore.

Falcons | More reps for Devonta Freeman, Jacquizz Rodgers

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 14:08:13 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman and Jacquizz Rodgers are expected to see more repetitions in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers with RB Steven Jackson (quadriceps) unlikely to play. However, head coach Mike Smith hasn't officially ruled Jackson out yet. The team is anxious, though, to see how Freeman will perform with more touches. RB Jerome Smith, who was promoted from the practice squad this week, will be active against the Panthers.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman should be your initial play in standard leagues if you're picking between he and Rodgers. Against the Panthers, Freeman could be a very nice FantasyScore play after replacing S-Jax last week and running for a TD.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman to step into bigger role

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 13:06:07 -0800

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman is likely to step into a bigger backfield role with RB Antone Smith (leg) out for the rest of the season. RB Steven Jackson remains the starter, however.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman is the most explosive runner on Atlanta's roster with Smith suffering a season-ending injury. That makes Freeman worth a waiver-wire acquisition for depth. Against the Cleveland Browns in Week 12, Freeman is an intriguing flex play.

Falcons | Big game for Devonta Freeman

Thu, 28 Aug 2014 20:07:16 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman had 12 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown and five catches for 45 yards during the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Steven Jackson is expected to play in Week 1, but if his hamstring injury flares up, Freeman could be in line for a major role. Freeman is better equipped to run between the tackles the fellow back Jacquizz Rodgers, and he can also catch the ball out of the backfield. As injury prone as Jackson has been recently, Freeman could be worth a late-round flier.

Falcons | Steven Jackson remains out

Thu, 21 Aug 2014 08:43:04 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson (hamstring) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson has missed several practices because of the injury, and his status for the regular season is uncertain at this point. Devonta Freeman could receive more playing time because of Jackson's injury. Jackson will enter the season as the starter if healthy, but Freeman will get carries during the season. Both Jackson and Freeman could be weekly flex options in some leagues.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman injured

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 14:19:01 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (undisclosed) left practice with trainers Monday, Aug. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman was turning into a nice sleeper with Steven Jackson's fragility, especially in PPR scoring leagues. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman going through growing pains

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 13:01:05 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman has been performing well during training camp but has to improve his pass protection, according to offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. "I think that's the biggest adjustment for a running back going from college to the NFL," Koetter said. "He had a great college career but teams try to test rookie running backs. They've got those big outside linebackers. There's a lot of protections, there's a lot of calls. There's a learning curve. He's on the right track."

Fantasy Tip: We'll remind you that Freeman is a rookie, so this shouldn't come as a surprise. With Steven Jackson already banged up (surprise, surprise), Freeman could see valuable repetitions this preseason, but he must show good pass-blocking skills if he's to be trusted in the regular season should S-Jax go down. For fantasy drafts this fall, Freeman is purely a late-round flier as a handcuff to Jackson.

Falcons | Steven Jackson has hammy issue

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 15:16:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson (hamstring) injured his hamstring Monday, July 28, which is why he wasn't practicing Tuesday, July 29. Head coach Mike Smith said Jackson will be ready for the team's first game.

Fantasy Tip: This is not what you want to see from an aging running back entering his age-31 season. Jacquizz Rodgers and Devonta Freeman could have heavy workloads if S-Jax continues to be bugged by nagging injuries all year long.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman's role to vary?

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 22:46:12 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman will begin his NFL career by trying to replace RB Jason Snelling (retired) as a do-all backup. Snelling played tailback, fullback and even returned kickoffs last year. Freeman's first task is to learn the system and then find a spot to carve out a role behind trusted veteran RBs Steven Jackson, Jacquizz Rodgers and Antone Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman is a trendy fantasy pick because of Jackson's durability issues, but he probably won't be anything more than one piece of a tandem approach if the Falcons need to replace S-Jax for any lengthy period of time. Temper your expectations.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman could push Steven Jackson for PT

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 23:35:52 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman will be groomed into the team's three-down back of the future, and he might battle RB Steven Jackson for playing time this year if he continues to look good. The battle for the third running back will be between RBs Antone Smith and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Falcons | Steven Jackson may have short leash

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 09:28:36 -0700

Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson, who is entering his age-31 season and likely only has one good season left in him, could find himself with less playing time if he is slowed by nagging injuries in 2014. Until then, though, Jackson is considered the team's starter.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson dealt with some nagging injuries last year, and by the end of the season, he looked just plain old and lacked explosiveness at the line. Don't be surprised to see Devonta Freeman handle more of the work as the season progresses, with S-Jax handling goal-line duties. If you own Jackson, Freeman is a necessary handcuff.
