Packers | Jeff Janis logs season-high snap count

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 10:38:10 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis played 58-of-62 snaps in a Week 8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, posting four catches for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: The snap count is obviously encouraging, but it is important to remember Green Bay did not have Randall Cobb (hamstring) or Ty Montgomery (illness) available. If both are back in Week 9 as expected, it is unlikely Janis will have much of a role again. His talent makes him well worth monitoring in all leagues, but he only belongs on a fantasy roster in dynasty leagues and really deep redraft formats for now.

Packers | Jeff Janis' hand remains in cast

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 21:01:47 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) will continue to wear a club cast on his injured hand at least through the team's Week 4 bye, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: Green Bay seems content to trot out Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams almost exclusively at this point, so it seems unlikely Janis will have much of a role even after the cast comes off.

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 16:09:00 -0700

Packers | Jeff Janis likely will be limited

Sat, 10 Sep 2016 14:10:55 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) likely will play on special teams if he is active for Week 1 but is not expected to be part of the offense since he has a club on his broken hand.

Fantasy Tip: Janis probably will be limited for the next few weeks while his hand heals, so owners should avoid him in all leagues.

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Packers | Jeff Janis practicing in cast

Tue, 06 Sep 2016 20:19:29 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) practiced Tuesday, Sept. 6, with his injured hand in a club cast.

Fantasy Tip: Janis broke his hand in August to cap off an already disappointing preseason, and the fact that he's out there with a club cast suggests the team values him more for his special teams acumen than his skills as a receiver. He's of no interest for fantasy purposes at this time.

Packers | Five out or unlikely for Thursday

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 19:15:42 -0700

Packers | Jeff Janis out a few weeks

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 14:20:06 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (finger) was told he'll be sidelined four to six weeks following surgery to put screws in the bones around his index finger.

Fantasy Tip: Janis may be out for the first couple weeks of the season, but his role would be limited anyway. He shouldn't be totally overlooked, but he's a weak blip on the fantasy radar right now.

Packers | No timetable for Jeff Janis

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 13:18:15 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) does not have a timetable for his return, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Janis will not practice this week and will not play against the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Aug. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Janis has little fantasy value since he's lower on Green Bay's depth chart. He should only be drafted in deeper leagues as a late-round flier.

Packers | Jeff Janis to sit this week

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 09:10:54 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) will not participate in practice this week and there is no timetable for his return, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: Janis was competing for a roster spot during training camp, but his status with the team is uncertain at this point because of the injury. Owners should monitor his progress over the next few weeks. He will be a risky option in fantasy drafts, so owners may want to look at other options.

Packers | Jeff Janis has fractured hand

Sat, 13 Aug 2016 06:29:03 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) may miss significant time because at least one of the bones in his hand is fractured, according a source. Janis suffered the injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 10, and did not play in the first preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Janis was receiving work with the first-team offense during training camp because of injuries at the position but was not making much progress. Owners in all leagues probably should avoid Janis even if he is ready for the regular season.

Packers | Jared Abbrederis making plays in camp

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 14:33:35 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jared Abbrederis has impressed in camp while WR Davante Adams and WR Jeff Janis have been quiet in the early going.

Fantasy Tip: Abbrederis has been limited to nine games through two pro seasons due to injuries and probably needs both Janis and Adams to remain unimpressive in order to take over the No. 3 role behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. The odds are long that will actually happen, but it is a possibility and the third receiver role has typically been an underrated source of fantasy production in Green Bay. Abbrederis should go undrafted in most leagues, but he's worth monitoring during the preseason just in case.

Packers | Jeff Janis receiving high-level education

Sat, 30 Jul 2016 15:32:30 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been a pet project of sorts for QB Aaron Rodgers early in training camp, according to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt. "Working with the young receivers, (Rodgers has been) great. He'll go over after his set of reps and talk through it with them, especially with Jeff (Janis). They're getting a good relationship now, working together and talking about what they expect from each other," Van Pelt said.

Fantasy Tip: Janis is fighting with Davante Adams for the No. 3 job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. It has been a fantasy-relevant position for some time in Green Bay and has taken on added importance with Nelson dealing with tendinitis in his non-surgically repaired left knee at the moment. Janis is an athletic freak who has reportedly struggled early in camp, but this kind of report lends support to the possibility he may be on the verge of breaking out soon. He's well worth a gamble in the final rounds on draft day.

Packers | Jeff Janis could be speed burner

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 21:15:26 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has nearly identical measurables to WR Jordy Nelson, and he posted a 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine with a vertical leap of 37 1/2 inches. If he proves this summer that his route running and knowledge of the offense are up to speed, he might add an element that the Green Bay offense desperately needs. "He's obviously gifted very well with his athleticism, his jumping ability and his speed. He just needs to get to a level where he's not thinking as much and his instincts take over," QB Aaron Rodgers said.

Fantasy Tip: Janis had a big postseason performance, and he could be ready to take another step forward. However, the depth chart is very competitive behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Whomever emerges as the No. 3 receiver will be worth a look in the late rounds of fantasy leagues.

Packers | Jeff Janis returning kicks

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 16:43:50 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been receiving first-team repetitions with the kickoff return team. That could change when WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) returns, but Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette doesn't believe it will.

Fantasy Tip: Janis and Montgomery have little fantasy relevance right now with Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams ahead of them. They can continue to be avoided in fantasy drafts.

Packers | Jeff Janis praised by head coach

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 22:16:30 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis received praise from head coach Mike McCarthy about his work during organized team activities (OTAs). "Jeff Janis is doing a lot of good things. He just needs to continue to progress through the fundamentals of the position," McCarthy said Monday, June 6. "Special teams he had an excellent last year last year, graded out as one of our top players. I'd like to see him that that same step as a wide receiver."

Fantasy Tip: Janis has plenty of company at the receiver position, so wait and see how he performs in training camp and the preseason before taking a chance on him on draft day. It might take an injury or two to open up a key role for Janis on offense.

Packers | Davante Adams may not make team

Tue, 03 May 2016 12:09:37 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams' roster spot is not a lock for the 2016 season, in the opinion of Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. WRs Jared Abbrederis, Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis and Trevor Davis are also not guaranteed roster spots.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to envision Adams not being on the Packers' roster in 2016, but Silverstein posited that only Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are guaranteed to make the team among the wide receivers. It's more likely than unlikely that Adams is still a Packer this season, though, but he shouldn't be viewed as more than a WR4.

Packers | Jeff Janis a work in progress

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 10:04:23 -0800

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis needs to improve his route running and learn how to better read defenses in the NFL. "He kind of has a stiffness there, and Luke, he took that on about Week 7 there after the bye week, and you could see him improve. He just needs things like that. You only get so much time with your players compared to prior years, but I'm hoping he takes another big step." Head coach Mike McCarthy said.

Fantasy Tip: The Packers felt Janis wasn't ready to make a big impact last year, despite the fact that Green Bay's receivers struggled mightily minus the injured Jordy Nelson. Janis had only two catches for 79 yards in the regular season but broke out for over 100 yards and two scores in their playoff loss, showing us he has potential. With Nelson returning this year, Janis is one to watch and could be worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

Packers | Jeff Janis praised by Mike McCarthy

Mon, 18 Jan 2016 23:37:37 -0800

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis posted just two receptions during the regular season, but he stepped up with seven grabs for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the playoff loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Mike McCarthy liked what he saw. "As a receiver, he was inconsistent, had some chances, up-and-down (this season)," McCarthy said. "But with that, I think he definitely learned from those experiences and just had a tremendous game against Arizona."

Fantasy Tip: Janis stepped up with Davante Adams sidelined and Randall Cobb leaving early, but remember that all of those guys will be back, as will Jordy Nelson, Jared Abbrederis and Ty Montgomery. In addition, the team could add help in the offseason in the form of a free agent or draft pick, so while Janis looked good, don't get too carried away with him in keeper fantasy formats.

Packers | Jeff Janis big in loss

Sat, 16 Jan 2016 20:56:19 -0800

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis had seven catches for 145 yards and two scores in a 26-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the divisional round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 16.

Fantasy Tip: With the Packers banged up at the receiver spot and James Jones bottled up by Patrick Peterson, Janis was thrust into a larger role and made the most of it. Despite the memorable game, he will likely fade back into fantasy irrelevance next year when Green Bay's receiving corps is back at full strength.

Packers | GB offense lacking speed

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 09:10:25 -0800

The Green Bay Packers have the slowest team in the league when it comes to skill positions in the passing game. The combined average 40-yard dash time of WRs Randall Cobb (4.55 seconds), Davante Adams (4.56), James Jones (4.6) plus TE Richard Rodgers (4.87) ranks as a league-worst 4.65 seconds. One of the biggest reasons the Packers receivers can't get open consistently this year is because of their lack of speed, according to an NFL scout. The loss of WR Jordy Nelson and his 4.51-second 40-yard dash has slowed this offense down. WRs Jeff Janis and Ty Montgomery are much faster, but neither is a top three receiver for the team right now, and Montgomery has missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

Fantasy Tip: As Demovsky notes, the biggest thing hurting this aerial game is the absence of Nelson as one of Aaron Rodgers' ($8,800, 17.6% of cap) favorite go-to targets. Rodgers will stay afloat but shouldn't be considered an elite QB1 week in and week out. This weekend against the Detroit Lions he should at least be able to put up respectable numbers for those that pay up for him on FantasyScore.

Packers | James Jones ahead of Jeff Janis

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 16:41:47 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones is listed ahead of WR Jeff Janis on the Packers' depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: That didn't take long. Jones' familiarity with Green Bay's offense and his connection with QB Aaron Rodgers obviously give him an advantage and help him make up for lost time. Randall Cobb and Davante Adams will still be the top two options in the passing game, and Ty Montgomery will also have a role, but Jones might be worth a waiver wire pickup.

Packers | Jeff Janis hasn't won over QB yet

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 18:39:15 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis is in the running for the No. 3 receiver job with WR Ty Montgomery, but beat writer Rob Reischel notes that Janis hasn't won over QB Aaron Rodgers yet. "Jeff will have some great days and some days where mentally he's making too many mistakes," Rodgers said. "The talent and athleticism are there. We just need to see from all those guys battling for those two spots just some more consistency."

Fantasy Tip: Janis could very well emerge as a fantasy option, and a very important one, by season's end. While being the No. 3 or 4 receiver in an offense in most places isn't attractive from a fantasy perspective, playing with Rodgers in Green Bay changes that.

Packers | Ty Montgomery with first-team

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:00:04 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery is practicing with the first-team offense Tuesday, Aug. 25, with WR Jeff Janis with the scout team.

Fantasy Tip: This is the first practice since it was announced Jordy Nelson tore the ACL in his knee and is lost for the season, so nothing is set in stone. However, Montgomery will be given the first chance to move up the depth chart to replace Nelson. A lot can change between now and Week 1, so keep an eye on this competition. Whoever wins the job could be useful for receiver depth in deeper fantasy leagues.

Packers | Ty Montgomery the WR3?

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 05:30:42 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery will be the slot receiver in practice this week with WR Jeff Janis, WR Myles White, WR Larry Pinkard, WR Ed Williams and WR Jared Abbrederis competing for a spot after him.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery is a rookie, but the slot role in this offense has solid potential. He's a WR5 flyer worth making.

Packers | Jeff Janis struggling with consistency

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 05:45:25 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis hasn't made the performance jump the team was hoping for this offseason. He filled in with the first-team offense when WR Jordy Nelson (hip) was out but hasn't sustained the momentum since Nelson returned. Janis struggles sinking in his hips and maneuvering in close quarters, and at times, he looks to be a straight-line speed receiver. "With Jeff, it's the consistency," said Alex Van Pelt, who coaches the wide receivers and quarterbacks. "He's a big guy so some of the routes cater to him. Some of the routes we run where there's a lot of sudden change in movements, they just don't fit the bigger players."

Packers | Jeff Janis more comfortable this year

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 19:47:21 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis continues to improve and was ready to step in and play at the end of last season, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. "Now it's a completely different world," Janis said. "It's really starting to slow down for me. I'm starting to see things a little differently, and it's coming a lot easier."

Packers | Jeff Janis running with No. 1 offense

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 05:18:11 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been working with the No. 1 offense while WR Jordy Nelson (hip) remains sidelined following hip surgery. Janis has been trying to build chemistry with QB Aaron Rodgers, which is a must for Janis to gain the trust of Rodgers and his coaches. "It's a lot different going with Aaron because he's on a whole other level, but I'm just trying to take advantage of all the reps that I get and try to make plays whenever he comes my way," Janis said.

Fantasy Tip: Janis' best shot at earning a role with the Packers will be on special teams, but his performance so far in organized team activities could also earn himself reps at receiver. Janis is the tallest and the fastest receiver on the team, and he has the ability to make big plays. Ignore Janis on draft day, but he could become an occasional option on FantasyScore.

Packers | Jeff Janis making strides

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 20:05:33 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis was singled out by head coach Mike McCarthy Tuesday, June 2. "Jeff Janis is really moving forward. (Janis) came on at the end of last year. (He) was ready to play," McCarthy said.

Fantasy Tip: Janis is a player on the move, and he could work his way into a decent role in the Green Bay offense in training camp and the preseason. For now, he is a wait-and-see guy with some upside, but if an injury or two also happens, he could find himself in a more prominent role.
