Patriots | James White thrives as receiver

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 12:02:20 -0700

New England Patriots RB James White was 18th among running backs last season with 54 targets despite playing in just 12 games. He caught 40 passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: White should take over as New England's primary pass-catching running back with Dion Lewis out indefinitely, with LeGarrette Blount still serving as the main runner. If White can stay healthy, he has a real chance to reach RB2 totals in PPR formats.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount battling Tyler Gaffney?

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 10:42:01 -0700

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount is "likely" battling RB Tyler Gaffney the club's final running back spot. RBs Dion Lewis and James White "appear to be locked in" as the receiving running backs, while RB Brandon Bolden "figures" to have a spot on the roster thanks to his role on special teams. Blount and Gaffney are competing for the "between-the-tackles kind of role."

Fantasy Tip: Due to Blount's proven track record, you have to believe he has the leg up in this competition, though it's also interesting that Gaffney was able to take an entire series worth of carries in the first half of New England's most recent preseason game with the first-team offense. No matter who emerges from this battle, though, they may not hold much fantasy value, given the amount of pieces regularly being used out of the Patriots backfield, as well as Bill Belichick's sometimes unpredictable use of his running backs.

Patriots | James White wants to be complete back

Sat, 06 Aug 2016 18:14:40 -0700

New England Patriots RB James White has been working on his run reads and pass blocking during training camp, and he said his goal is to upgrade his skills as a runner.

Fantasy Tip: White could have some value as a sleeper in PPR leagues, especially if Dion Lewis struggles or suffers another injury, but he is nothing more than a late-round lottery ticket as part of a New England backfield that is always tough to predict.

Patriots | D.J. Foster to win roster spot?

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 20:29:51 -0700

New England Patriots RB D.J. Foster is in the mix to win a roster spot, and beat writer Ben Volin predicts Foster will win a spot over RB James White. Volin notes that Foster makes some tough, competitive catches, especially on wheel routes.

Fantasy Tip: Foster might work his way on the field on passing downs, but he is a long way from fantasy relevance even if he makes the roster.

Patriots | New England likely to add at RB

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 21:06:41 -0800

New England Patriots RB James White played 57 of the 83 offensive snaps in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24, and RB Brandon Bolden played 16. RB Steven Jackson rounded things out with 11 snaps. The team will also get RB Dion Lewis (knee) back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2016, while RB LeGarrette Blount is an impending free agent. The team might face an offseason similar to 2011 when the selected a pair of backs in the NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis has the potential to be the top running back with this current group, with White and Bolden as solid backups. However, look for a rookie, and possibly a veteran running back, to be added in the offseason to provide competition.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount staying with Patriots?

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 13:50:08 -0800

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount could be on his way out of New England as he enters free agency this offseason. RB Dion Lewis (knee) will return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and RB James White filled in nicely for Lewis. The Patriots also have another big back on their roster in RB Steven Jackson, putting Blount's future with New England in limbo.

Fantasy Tip: Gone are the days of Blount rushing for hundreds of yards and multiple touchdowns. The Patriots do need a ground-and-pound type of running back, but Blount may not be the answer for the future. This situation will play out over the course of the next few months, but Blount may be heading for fantasy irrelevancy.

Patriots | James White could be busy

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 18:25:15 -0800

New England Patriots RB James White faces the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, and no team allowed more catches or receiving touchdown to running backs in the regular season than the Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: The Patriots threw the ball 42 times and ran just 16 times against Denver in the regular season, so White ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) should have plenty of opportunities to use his pass-catching skills. If you don't want to pay up for one of the top backs available at FantasyScore, White could make an effective alternative.

Patriots | James White pricey per touch

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 20:11:08 -0800

New England Patriots RB James White posted one carry for five yards and two receptions for 39 yards on three targets last weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs, and now he'll face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: White ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) was productive per touch, but there weren't that many with a healthy Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski sucking up most of the New England targets, and Steven Jackson ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) seeing most of the carries. White has the potential to be a game changer, but his touches are limited and his FantasyScore salary is way up. That's not a good combination, even with a short slate of games.

Patriots | New England RBs set for a small workload?

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 05:15:59 -0800

The New England Patriots ran the ball just nine times during their Week 7 game against the New York Jets, and a similar game plan is likely for their Week 16 meeting, in the opinion of WEEI.com's Christopher Price. RBs James White, Brandon Bolden, Joey Iosefa and Steven Jackson project to have a tough task this week, as New England has averaged 18 carries for just 62 yards over the past five games against the Jets.

Fantasy Tip: For the season, New York owns the second best run defense in yards per game. So with the New England backfield loaded with options, it will be difficult to trust anyone outside of White ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) in PPR formats, including at FantasyScore. Jackson, Bolden ($3,400, 6.8%) and Iosefa ($2,000, 4.0%) are nothing more than fliers in all formats because of their uncertain workload and difficult matchup.

Patriots | Pats backfield distributes workload

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 09:20:27 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden played 29 snaps in Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans, while RB James White played 23 snaps. RB Joey Iosefa was on the field for 19 offensive snaps (17 as an running back and two as a fullback), and finished with a team-high 51 yards on 14 carries in his NFL debut.

Fantasy Tip: Bill Belichick is constantly changing things up in his backfield, making it very tough to predict who will give you the most fantasy success. Things will get even more confusing after they just signed Steven Jackson. It wouldn't be smart to expect S-Jax to contribute much right away, but picking a daily option between Bolden, White and Iosefa is like playing the lottery.
