Raiders | Derek Carr agrees to extension

Thu, 22 Jun 2017 07:22:07 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr agreed to a five-year, $125 million extension Thursday, June 22, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The deal makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history from an annual perspective. Carr has had two really good years in a row. At 26, with a good supporting cast around him, he looks poised to take the next step. However, he's not in the cream of the crop in fantasy yet. When the top signal-callers come off the board, Carr is an excellent fallback.

Raiders | Derek Carr deal near completion

Thu, 22 Jun 2017 05:29:46 -0700

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr has a deal in place with the Raiders, and only language remains. It could be finalized this week. Carr could choose to backload the deal because there is no state tax in Nevada and California's tax rate is 13.3 percent. Doing so would save him millions.

Fantasy Tip: Carr has about as much hype as anyone in fantasy circles, and he was great last season before his leg injury. However, it's premature to put him in the elite QB1 category. He's a nice consolation if you miss out on the first three or four.

Raiders | Derek Carr could receive big extension

Fri, 09 Jun 2017 15:06:06 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr has a chance to receive $25 million per season in a contract extension, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: Carr is looking to sign an extension before the start of training camp, so owners will need to keep an eye on the situation over the next few weeks. Carr was one of the better quarterbacks in 2016 before he suffered his injury and will have a solid group of pass catchers again this season. Carr should be considered a No. 1 quarterback in all leagues.

Raiders | Derek Carr would play sans extension

Tue, 30 May 2017 14:29:56 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr said he will play out the 2016 season even if a contract extension is not agreed upon before the start of the season. Carr added that he doesn't want the extension to be a distraction this year. The quarterback's hope is that an extension will be done by training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Despite not yet finishing as a QB1 in his young career, Carr should be in the QB1 conversation. He throws behind one of the better offensive lines in the game, has Marshawn Lynch to provide a respectable running game and throws to arguably the best receiving duo in the NFL in Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. View Carr as a low-end QB1 heading into 2017.

Raiders | Derek Carr to have extension by training camp?

Mon, 22 May 2017 11:57:54 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr is confident that his agent and the Raiders will have a contract extension agreed upon before training camp begins.

Fantasy Tip: Carr won't need an extension until next offseason, but why wait? He's officially one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL after just three seasons. His touchdown to interception ratio is superb (81:31) and he has one of the better wide receivers duos to work with in Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. All in all, Carr is ideal for drafting as a low-end QB1.

Thu, 18 May 2017 19:30:26 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr wants to work out a contract extension this offseason, and general manager Reggie McKenzie said he is confident that a deal will be agreed upon. "We're going to do everything to make sure this contract gets done," McKenzie said.

Raiders | Derek Carr to start extension talks soon

Wed, 03 May 2017 17:06:17 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr will begin contract extension talks with the Raiders in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Fantasy Tip: Carr probably will agree to an extension at some point this offseason. He is coming off a 2016 season where he threw for 3,937 yards and 28 touchdowns. Carr will have solid options to throw to in the passing game and can be a No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues if he is healthy.

Raiders | GM optimistic about Derek Carr extension

Fri, 21 Apr 2017 12:30:40 -0700

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is optimistic about getting an extension for QB Derek Carr done before training camp, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur.

Fantasy Tip: Carr echoed similar thoughts last week, so this should get done in a timely fashion. The 26-year-old missed the tail end of last season with a broken fibula but has been a full participant at OTAs. At the moment, he slots in as a midrange fantasy QB1 with upside.

Raiders | Derek Carr fully participating in OTAs

Tue, 18 Apr 2017 18:22:55 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr's (leg) surgically-repaired right fibula is healed enough to the point that he's able to be a full participant in the team's offseason training program, which began Monday, April 17. "I've been running, jumping, throwing, cutting, everything," Carr said. "So I'm ready to rock. I'm ready to do absolutely everything. I did everything my teammates did today. I'll do everything my teammates will do tomorrow."

Fantasy Tip: Carr enjoyed an MVP-caliber season in 2017, registering 3,937 passing yards to go with a terrific 28/6 TD/INT ratio in 15 games. Overall, he finished with a shiny 96.7 QB rating, and it looks like he might be in a position to pick up where he left off based on his health going into OTAs. Carr looks like he can be fully trusted again as a QB1 entering the new campaign.

Raiders | Derek Carr extension coming?

Mon, 17 Apr 2017 11:11:14 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr may receive a contract extension this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: There's no question Carr deserves an extension after solidifying himself as the quarterback of the future for the Raiders. Extension or no extension, one can expect about 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns from Carr this season, putting him in low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 territory.

Raiders | Derek Carr will be ready for workouts

Mon, 27 Mar 2017 17:41:48 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (leg) will be able to fully participate in the offseason workouts, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Fantasy Tip: Carr could still be limited during offseason workouts even if he is 100 percent but should be a full participant during training camp. He finished the 2016 season with 3,937 yards and 28 touchdowns and can be a No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues next season.

Raiders | Derek Carr close to full health

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 11:19:01 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (leg) said he is close to fully recovered from the fractured fibula he suffered during the regular season, according to OT Donald Penn.

Fantasy Tip: Carr could be limited during some of the offseason workouts but should be a full participant when training camp starts. He was tied for seventh in the NFL with his 28 touchdowns and finished with 3,937 yards and only six interceptions. He will have several weapons to work with in the passing game and can be a No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Raiders | Derek Carr will have say in game planning

Thu, 16 Feb 2017 10:46:21 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr will have a voice in the game planning, according to new offensive coordinator Todd Downing, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach after former offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's contract expired.

"There's been a lot made about his command at the line of scrimmage. There's certainly going to be opportunities for Derek to do that," Downing said. "... Where I see him needing a little bit more command is just being able to share his thoughts of game plans. Being a student of the game, as he already is, but vocalize what he likes and doesn't like. I think my relationship with him is something that's going to give him the opportunity to voice his opinions. I look forward to him really taking charge of expressing his thoughts on the offense."

Fantasy Tip: Carr was in the conversation of NFL MVP before breaking his leg, and with few changes expected in the system, there is little reason to doubt he can have another special season. Carr is a rock-solid No. 1 fantasy quarterback.

Raiders | Derek Carr extension important to Oakland

Tue, 24 Jan 2017 14:16:14 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr could be in negotiations for a contract extension in the near future, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie. Carr is heading into a contract year in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Carr is the future of the Raiders on offense, so it would behoove Oakland to sign him to a long-term deal sooner rather than later. As long as he fully recovers from his broken fibula, he'll be a QB1 option for 2017 fantasy drafts.

Raiders | Derek Carr extension on the agenda

Fri, 20 Jan 2017 07:43:12 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr will have discussions on a contract extension this offseason, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie. Carr will be in the final year of his contract in 2017, and there is no fifth-year option on him.

Fantasy Tip: Carr's numbers this season are pretty close to his sophomore season in 2015, but the exception is that he cut his interceptions in half. His completion percentage was up a tick to 63.8%. He'll be a midrange QB1 option in fantasy drafts.

Raiders | Derek Carr had broken finger

Tue, 03 Jan 2017 15:45:02 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (leg, finger) suffered a broken finger in Week 12, not just a dislocation as previously believed.

Fantasy Tip: Carr's finger isn't as worrisome with the broken fibula he's recovering from now. The fact that he played with a break and dislocations in his finger is a testament to his toughness, though. He's a QB1 candidate again next season, assuming his leg makes a full recovery.

Raiders | Derek Carr eyeing playoff return

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (leg) is aiming to return if the Raiders advance to the Super Bowl, but he's considered an extreme long shot.

Raiders | Derek Carr doing well

Tue, 27 Dec 2016 12:37:08 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (fibula) underwent successful surgery Tuesday, Dec. 27, and is doing well, according to his mother. Carr is expected to be fully recovered from his broken fibula in six to eight weeks.

Fantasy Tip: If the Raiders can win throughout the playoffs then Carr could return in time for the Super Bowl. As for Week 17, though, Matt McGloin is not even close to being a starting fantasy option against one of the best pass defenses in the NFL in the Denver Broncos.

Raiders | Derek Carr likely out 6-8 weeks

Mon, 26 Dec 2016 09:52:52 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (fibula) will undergo surgery on his broken leg Tuesday, Dec. 27, and is expected to need six to eight weeks to recover.

Fantasy Tip: While the low end of that timeline he suggests could make it back in time for the Super Bowl, Carr's season is effectively over, as expected. Impending free-agent Matt McGloin will start in his absence and could stand to make himself a lot of money this spring with a nice showing over the next couple of weeks. With that said, McGloin will be nearly impossible to start in fantasy this week or during the NFL Playoffs.

Raiders | Derek Carr has broken fibula

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 16:11:29 -0800

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (fibula) suffered a broken fibula in the Week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts and he will require surgery, ending his season.

Fantasy Tip: With Carr going down, Matt McGloin will be the starting signal caller for Week 17 and into the playoffs for the Raiders. McGloin is a capable backup, but he is no Carr. The loss hurts the fantasy appeal of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree heading into postseason pools, while perhaps giving a bump to their cadre of running backs.

Raiders | Derek Carr helped off the field

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 14:47:08 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (leg) suffered an apparent lower leg injury in the fourth quarter of the Week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He was in obvious pain rolling around on the ground while grimacing.

Fantasy Tip: Carr's leg was planted and twisted around after contact, and he was unable to put any weight on it while the training staff helped him off the field. Matt McGloin will replace him and likely finish up. For fantasy purposes, Carr was still able to post 228 yards and three touchdown strikes even if he cannot play another down in Week 16.

Fri, 23 Dec 2016 15:15:46 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 23, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Carr has seen his numbers drop a bit since he suffered the injury and has posted only 330 yards in the last two games. He will have a favorable matchup this week and could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in some fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Carr has had some problems with his throwing accuracy since suffering the injury and has thrown for less than 215 yards in each of his last two games. He will be facing the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16 and can be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Raiders | Derek Carr not lining up under center

Tue, 20 Dec 2016 06:54:49 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) has not taken a snap under center and has been in shotgun or pistol formations since he injured his finger. The team has been limited in what they can do, especially deep in the red zone, in the two formations. "Yes, it is somewhat of an issue," head coach Jack Del Rio said. "It is not ideal. Being completely honest about it, it is an issue that we are working through. At some point, we will feel better about going under center, we will; but until then, we'll execute the best we can out of the formations we feel most comfortable with."

Fantasy Tip: Carr's completion percentage is 52.3% the last three games that he has played through the injury. He's also averaging just 196.7 passing yards per game and one score. He has a tough matchup against an Indianapolis Colts team that has shored up its pass defense in recent weeks. Carr is a midrange QB1 that has a caution flag attached to him.

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 05:22:06 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr was 19-for-30 for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: He hasn't put up great numbers two weeks in a row now, and the finger injury looks to be an issue. If you own him in traditional leagues, you're likely going to play him despite a tough matchup against the Indianapolis Colts next week.

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 15:15:51 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 16, and is not on the injury report for Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: Carr struggled in Week 14 because of his injury but recorded seven touchdowns and two interceptions in the previous three games. Carr is a bit of a risky option for owners, because the finger injury is on his throwing hand, but can still be a starting candidate in most leagues.

Raiders | Derek Carr practices in full again

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 16:28:03 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) got in his second straight full practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: While Carr has been a dependable QB1 for fantasy owners, he's coming off his worst outing of the season last Thursday night, which is probably a direct result of his injured pinkie that he sustained a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, he will have had 10 days of rest going into Sunday's contest, so he figures to be in better shape and bounce back in a favorable matchup. Thus, his owners who are still alive should continue to lean on him under center.

Raiders | Derek Carr practices in full

Wed, 14 Dec 2016 19:22:46 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) was able to take part in a full practice session Wednesday, Dec. 14, despite the injury to the finger on his right hand.

Fantasy Tip: Carr is expected to continue playing without any interruption, wearing a glove on his throwing hand to protect his injury. He was terrible last week in Kansas City, passing for just 117 yards while completing 17 of his 41 pass attempts with no touchdowns for just the second time this season. However, frigid temperatures also might have played a part in his poor showing. He threw for 317 yards with two scores in Week 5 against the Chargers in the first meeting.

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 17 of his 41 pass attempts for 117 yards in a 21-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: It was Carr's worst game of the season, but he should return to form and deliver QB1 numbers against the Chargers in Week 14.

Raiders | Derek Carr succeeds from shotgun, pistol

Tue, 06 Dec 2016 17:51:43 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) did not take a single snap under center last week. Not being under center eliminated any potentially risky center-to-quarterback exchanges with Carr's injured finger. Carr still managed 260 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 13 win. Head coach Jack Del Rio did not indicate if the Raiders would use the same strategy this week.

Fantasy Tip: Carr has been one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL this year, wherever he's taking a snap. He'll be in a hostile environment against the Kansas City Chiefs this Thursday night, but the Chiefs have been porous against the pass this year. Carr is a QB1 consideration again this week.

Raiders | Derek Carr tosses pair of TDs

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 22:38:28 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) completed 19 of his 35 pass attempts for 260 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills. He also ran twice for four yards.

Fantasy Tip: Carr did not show any ill-effects from the finger injury he suffered last week. He remains a fantasy must-have in all leagues heading into Week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday night, although with sub-freezing temperatures the offense could take a while to warm up.

Raiders | Derek Carr expects to be fine

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 09:38:14 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) said he expects to be fine and believes he will be able to handle snaps from under center. Carr will have a glove available to use but hopes not to use it.

Fantasy Tip: Carr probably will not be limited by the injury and likely will be asked to throw as much as he had before the injury. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Thu, 01 Dec 2016 19:16:12 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 1, and he wasn't wearing a glove on his throwing hand.

Fantasy Tip: Carr faces an improved Buffalo defense in Week 13, but he should still be considered a QB1.

Raiders | Derek Carr practices in full

Wed, 30 Nov 2016 17:35:35 -0800

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (finger) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Carr appears to be on track to play in Week 13, but owners should keep an eye on the situation to see if he suffers any setbacks. He has thrown for at least 295 yards in three of the last four games and has nine touchdowns during that span. Carr can be a solid No. 1 quarterback in most leagues.
