Panthers | Devin Funchess pushing Kelvin Benjamin

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 12:14:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has really impressed wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl this offseason. Proehl said Funchess is playing at a level that is forcing WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) to keep up and get better. "To be honest with you, where Devin is right now and where Kelvin needs to get to, I think Devin is pushing Kelvin," Proehl said. "He's realizing, 'I've got to get back, I've got to push, because [Funchess] is pretty dang good.' Proehl did admit that Benjamin is still fully recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, however.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin and Funchess seem destined for a dynamic 1-2 punch in 2016, as long as they can stay on the field. The Panthers have no shortage of big targets near the end zone, including Benjamin and Funchess. Benjamin looked good in his first preseason action last week. He's a WR2 option, while Funchess is still more of a low-end WR3 to high-end WR4 consideration.

Panthers | No brace for Kelvin Benjamin

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 13:11:30 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) doesn't plan on wearing a brace to protect the torn anterior cruciate ligament he's healing from. Benjamin said a brace feels uncomfortable. Head coach Ron Rivera agrees with the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin isn't quite at full health, but he should be there at least close when the regular season commences. He's the Panthers' top wideout even after missing last season, but caution should still be used. It's best to draft Benjamin as a low-end No. 2 wide receiver.

Panthers | Devin Funchess to be the top dog?

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 20:21:12 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess could outperform WR Kelvin Benjamin this season, according to beat writer David Newton.

Fantasy Tip: Funchess posted a touchdown in the preseason opener, and Benjamin is reportedly struggling with his conditioning. It's very early in the process, but fantasy owners in early-draft leagues who picked Funchess in the middle rounds might be very pleased with that prognostication. Funchess has plenty of upside but remains a low-end WR3 or flex play in most leagues until he proves drops will not be a problem again.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin still not in shape

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 16:57:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is "struggling with conditioning", according to head coach Ron Rivera, who added his goal is to see Benjamin be able to handle 30 to 35 snaps by the end of the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: It shouldn't come as a surprise that Benjamin isn't quite ready yet coming off of last year's ACL tear, but this is the kind of report that should sound off an alarm for owners hoping he will pick right back up where he left off as a rookie. Benjamin benefited from a lot of negative game scripts in 2014 and the Panthers have already hinted they plan to spread it around in the passing game, so owners should treat him as a high-risk WR2.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will be limited

Mon, 08 Aug 2016 16:40:28 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will receive limited snaps during the first preseason game because he still coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin probably will be limited during the preseason so the team can make sure he is ready for the regular season. He should be one of the main targets in the passing game this season and can be a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in most fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin receives day off

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 06:36:59 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) received the day off from practice Sunday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is close to being 100% following his surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament that cost him the entire 2015 season. The odd day off shouldn't be cause for concern at this point, as he stands to have a large target share in the passing game. View Benjamin as a solid target in the middle rounds as a mid-tier No. 3 receiver for your virtual club.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin close to 100%

Thu, 28 Jul 2016 19:55:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is close to top form, head coach Ron Rivera said Saturday, July 30, and wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl said he has been impressed by Benjamin's ability to make contested catches.

Fantasy Tip: His health and a one-year sample size are legit concerns you have to overlook, but Benjamin has all the physical tools to be a dominant receiver. Double-digit touchdowns and WR2 production aren't out of the question.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin ready to practice

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 15:05:16 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) has been cleared to participate in practice, but head coach Ron Rivera said Benjamin likely will be eased back into practice.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Benjamin will receive much playing time during the preseason, but he should be fine for the start of the regular season. Benjamin should be one of the top targets for Cam Newton this season and will be a weekly starting option for fantasy owners.

Panthers | Looking for Devin Funchess to step up

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 22:58:36 -0700

The Carolina Panthers hope WR Devin Funchess can pick up where he left off at the end of the regular season in 2015. If he can secure the starting job opposite WR Kelvin Benjamin, the team would have an impressive three-headed monster with TE Greg Olsen.

Fantasy Tip: Funchess has a ton of drops last season, as he appeared overwhelmed when thrust into a meaningful role in his rookie season. If he can stay healthy, avoid the drops and make further progress, he might be a worthwhile WR3/4 or flex play in most leagues of 12 or more teams.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin, Luke Kuechly on the side

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 07:19:49 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) and LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) are working on the side Tuesday, June 14. Benjamin is working back from a torn ACL and should be ready for training camp.

Fantasy Tip: There is some risk with Benjamin coming back from injury, but he'll be in the upper echelon of WR2 territory in fantasy if he's at full health.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin moving well

Tue, 31 May 2016 07:18:13 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is moving around well during organized team activities, and it doesn't look at all like he had surgery last season on his knee, in the opinion of ESPN.com's David Newton.

Fantasy Tip: Many fantasy owners may be wary of Benjamin after he missed all of last year after tearing the ACL in his knee. But don't forget he caught 73 passes for 1,0008 yards and nine scores in his rookie year in 2014. Assuming he's fully healthy, he'll be Cam Newton's go-to target and should be firmly in WR territory on draft day.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin back at practice

Thu, 26 May 2016 10:51:08 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is back at practice in organized team activities Thursday, May 26, for the first time since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in training camp last year. Carolina is likely to ease him back into work, though, after he totaled 1,008 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin's stellar rookie season might make him a bit overvalued going into 2016 drafts. It might take him a while to get back into the flow after a full year off, but his physical abilities leap off the page. Cam Newton has his go-to target back. Consider Benjamin a solid No. 2 wide receiver investment.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin should be ready for camp

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 10:49:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) should be a full participant when training camp begins.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin missed the entire 2015 season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament but should be ready for 2016. Benjamin should be one of the main targets for Cam Newton and would be a solid No. 2 wide receiver for fantasy owners.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will be limited in OTAs

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 08:29:42 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will participate in organized team activities, but he'll be limited.

Fantasy Tip: After you saw what Carolina did on offense last season (Ted Ginn had 10 touchdowns), you can only imagine what a healthy Benjamin could have done. Benjamin will be in that low-end WR1/high-end WR2 area, and obviously, he'd be a safer WR2.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin progressing in rehab

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 16:22:53 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is doing some light running and cutting as he continues his recovery from a torn left ACL.

Fantasy Tip: Perhaps most promisingly, Benjamin has maintained his playing weight of 238 pounds after arriving at camp a bit overweight last season. Even though Cam Newton was able to enjoy a MVP season without his top receiver from 2015, the Super Bowl provided more than enough proof that he needs more than Greg Olsen. Benjamin was a top-20 fantasy receiver as a rookie in 2014 and should be expected to be a high-end WR2 again in 2016.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin does light work

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 09:34:41 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) did some light work in practice Friday, Jan. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is four months removed from ACL repair surgery and should be ready for training camp. He'll be a WR2 consideration on draft day.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin put on IR

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 12:06:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Devin Funchess and Greg Olsen are the main beneficiaries of Benjamin's absence. Jerricho Cotchery and Corey Brown should also see increased roles. Funchess now has low-end WR2 to high-end WR3 potential. Olsen should be considered a top-three fantasy tight end. Cotchery and Brown are safer to draft for depth, but could be viewed as deep sleepers.

Panthers | Devin Funchess the new No. 1?

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 18:53:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess is the leading candidate to replace WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) as the X receiver, and head coach Ron Rivera said Funchess' high football IG will ease the transition.

Fantasy Tip: Funchess should see an uptick in targets with Benjamin sidelined, especially in the red zone where he can use his size advantage. Any rookie is going to be inconsistent, but Funchess shoud be a serviceable WR3.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin was big deep threat

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 14:50:25 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) led the Panthers with eight catches on throws over 20 yards downfield last year. The rest of the team had six such catches combined. Benjamin is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Fantasy Tip: There's no question the Panthers have lost their best wide receiver. Benjamin opened up the field for Carolina and was a big red-zone threat. Again, Devin Funchess' value increases the most with the loss of Benjamin. Jerrico Cotcher, Ted Ginn Jr. and Philly Brown shouldn't be overlooked, however.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin has torn ACL

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 14:39:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) tore his anterior cruciate ligament Wednesday, Aug. 19. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: This is a huge blow for the Panthers, and a decent blow for Cam Newton's fantasy value, too. Devin Funchess is probably the biggest benefactor with Benjamin out. Jerricho Cotchery, Philly Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. all have increased value as well. Funchess should now be viewed as a low-end WR3 to high-end WR4. Cotchery, Brown and Ginn have lower value, but are still worth drafting or adding to your fantasy roster(s).

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin has sprained knee

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 08:21:27 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was unofficially diagnosed with a sprained left knee. He'll have an MRI.

Fantasy Tip: A knee sprain could have him back within a matter of weeks. However, an MRI will give him a clearer outlook. As it stands, if he misses the first couple of weeks, he falls to a low-end WR2.

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 07:02:39 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (leg) was carted off at practice Wednesday, Aug. 19, with a left leg injury. Benjamin cut towards the sideline while running a route and went down. He wasn't able to put weight on the leg.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin was a solid WR2 in fantasy, but he has been dogged by conditioning issues and a slew of injuries. Keep an eye on his status as it's too early to speculate.

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 09:52:41 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) said his hamstrings are fine and that he is 100% healthy entering training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin missed some time this offseason because of a hamstring injury, but it appears he is ready for the start of camp. He is coming off a solid 2014 season and should be the No. 1 target in the passing game. He likely will be selected in the early to middle rounds of drafts this season.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin at playing weight

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 11:30:44 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin said he is currently at his playing weight a week before training camp begins. Benjamin said he has changed his conditioning and diet in order to stay in shape.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin was nine pounds overweight earlier this offseason, so it's encouraging that he's done what he needed to do to get back into playing shape. He should be the Panthers' best option at wide receiver again this year. Take him as a WR2 in your fantasy drafts.

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 07:38:38 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) is expected to be 100% ready for training camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin gave some red flags with his lack of conditioning that led to hamstring issues this offseason. If he doesn't have any further setbacks, he's a good WR2 to target this season.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's weight gain overblown

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 12:50:32 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's reported weight gain this offseason is being overblown, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. Gettleman expects Benjamin to be ready to go for training camp next month. A team source said Benjamin, who played at 245 pounds as a rookie last year, showed up to workouts in April nine pounds overweight. "It really is much ado about nothing. Right now he's only five pounds off his playing weight. That's it," Gettleman said after the team wrapped up their three-day minicamp. Benjamin has had weight problems before, as he took a redshirt year in college after being 20 pounds overweight. He had 73 catches for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014, but he missed 10 of 14 practices during organized team activities and minicamp with injuries to both his hamstrings.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries to his legs already in offseason workouts and reports of weight gain aren't what you want to hear from an impressive rookie looking to improve in his second season. However, it's still early in the offseason, and Benjamin should be viewed as a strong WR2 in fantasy leagues heading into draft season.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin reported overweight

Thu, 18 Jun 2015 07:59:34 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) showed up 8 or 9 pounds overweight, and head coach Ron Rivera believes Benjamin's hamstring injury could be a result of that. "It could be as simple as weight," Rivera said in an attempt to explain why Benjamin suffered another hamstring injury just as he returned from one. "He did come in a little heavy and he had to work himself into shape. Or diet or something. We're going to take a look at it and make sure it's not a chronic issue with him. He's too good a football player to have on the sideline."

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is a very good WR2, but showing up overweight and two hamstring injuries give us some pause. Monitor his progress in training camp.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin misses practice

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 09:10:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) did not take part in practice Wednesday, June 17, because of a hamstring injury. It is not the same hamstring he injured earlier this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin does not need to push himself this offseason, so he probably will not be back on the field until training camp. Benjamin likely will be the top receiver for Carolina this season and could be a middle-round pick in most drafts.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin readying for grind

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 19:14:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is working on ways to take care of his body better this offseason in order to handle the grind of a 16-game schedule. He is also working on running better routes.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers added Devin Funchess in the draft and Ted Ginn Jr. in free agency to bolster the receiving corps. If either of those two can step up their game, it will be harder for teams to double team Benjamin therefore freeing him up for more production. Fantasy owners in standard leagues will want to start looking K.B.ís way in the middle of Round 3.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin takes part in practice

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 11:06:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) participated in practice Thursday, June 11.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has been sitting out because of a hamstring injury, but it does not appear to be serious. He is coming off a solid season with 1,009 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Benjamin should be the top receiving option for the Panthers this season and could be an option in the middle rounds of drafts.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin returning soon

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 12:58:18 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) may return to full participation in organized team activities Tuesday, June 9, after taking some repetitions Monday, June 8. Benjamin injured his hamstring last month and has not participated in OTAs.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Benjamin does not see a setback with his nagging hamstring injury, he should be good to go for the rest of OTAs, minicamp and training camp. Benjamin should be considered a low-end WR1 or high-end WR2 going into drafts this offseason.

Panthers | Extra snaps for Devin Funchess

Sun, 31 May 2015 16:29:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has been seeing extra snaps while WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) is sidelined, and head coach Ron Rivera said the extra work for Funchess has been an unintended plus.

Fantasy Tip: Funchess has a great chance to open the year as Carolina's No. 2 receiver, and he has the size to create some matchup problems, especially in the red zone. For now, draft him as a low-end WR4 with some upside.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin still out

Thu, 28 May 2015 12:27:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) sat out organized team activities Thursday, May 28, as he continues to nurse a sore hamstring.

Fantasy Tip: It was expected that Benjamin was going to sit out OTAs this week, so this isn't a big surprise. The key is for him to rest it long enough so that it doesn't get aggravated when he returns. As long as he's healthy heading into the season, he should be drafted as a WR2.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin nursing injury

Thu, 21 May 2015 13:55:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) is nursing a strained hamstring he suffered last week, according to a source. Benjamin is not likely to participate in organized team activities next week.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin's injury is relatively minor, especially at this point in the offseason as he should be ready to go for training camp. Benjamin had a stellar rookie campaign and there's no reason to believe he shouldn't be able to see similar success in his second season.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin led the team with seven catches on 10 targets for 75 yards and two scores in a 31-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional-round playoff game Saturday, Jan. 10.

Sat, 03 Jan 2015 18:26:16 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin had four catches for 33 yards in the team's wild-card playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday, Jan. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin's four catches and seven targets actually led the team, but his 33 yards ranked fifth. Carolina's passing attack was quiet in general, and the competition isn't going to be any easier in the next round of the playoffs.

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 08:18:14 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin won't face Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (shoulder) Sunday, Dec. 21, who is out with a shoulder injury.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin ($7,100; 14.2% of your cap) is a decent gamble as a low-end WR1 on FantasyScore. The absence of the stud corner gives Benjamin even more of a promising outlook.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin yet to be cleared

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 11:27:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (concussion), who looked good while practicing in full Friday, Oct. 17, has yet to be cleared by an independent doctor in the concussion protocol. Head coach Ron Rivera expects Benjamin to be cleared Saturday, Oct. 18. "He looked good on the field," Rivera said. "He practiced well. He was sharp. I really don't think he had a (mental error). He took a lot of reps today, which I understand is part of protocol." Benjamin passed sideline concussion tests in Week 6 and was allowed to return to the game.

Fantasy Tip: All indications are pointing toward Benjamin playing against the Green Bay Packers, especially if he passes his test tomorrow. If he's playing, he's not a bad option for your FantasyScore lineups for $6,700 (13.4% of cap).

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 11:12:46 -0700

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 17. He is listed as questionable for Week 7.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin may be a game-time decision, so owners will need to check the inactive list to see if he is playing. Benjamin costs $6,700 on FantasyScore but may be too much of an injury risk for owners to use.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (concussion) practiced with his helmet on Friday, Oct. 17, and appeared to look good while doing every drill. The Charlotte Observer's Joe Person believes that Benjamin will play in Week 7 against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin remains in the concussion protocol, and he's questionable for Sunday morning. You'll have the luxury of knowing early whether he's playing, but he remains a risk at FantasyScore for $6,700 (13.4% of cap).

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin questionable

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 09:46:20 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 7 against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin costs $6,700 (13.4% of cap), so he's a big risk this weekend against the Packers. If he doesn't play, Jerricho Cotchery ($3,200) may deserve a flier as a sleeper play. Greg Olsen would likely see a heavy amount of targets, as well.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery a sneaky start?

Thu, 16 Oct 2014 14:48:23 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery could be a sneaky start this week if WR Kelvin Benjamin (concussion) is unable to play. Even with Benjamin in the lineup last week, Cotchery saw 10 targets in a tie with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers will likely need to air the ball out frequently on the road against the pass-happy Green Bay Packers. Cotchery would be a nice option for a value play ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) on FantasyScore if Benjamin is out.
