Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin back in shape

Mon, 19 Jun 2017 09:11:56 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin appears to have worked himself back in shape, in the opinion of beat writer Joseph Person. Head coach Ron Rivera said that Benjamin didn't weigh the reported 280 pounds in April, but he might have been 270 pounds. On the final day of minicamp, Benjamin reached down to catch a pass a couple of inches off the ground and got both feet inbounds.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin appears to have received the wake-up call, but this appears to be an issue that could be an ongoing thing. He has low-end WR2 prowess in fantasy, but he's safer as a WR3.

Panthers | Coach defends Kelvin Benjamin

Thu, 25 May 2017 18:22:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been facing unfair criticism, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and Rivera said Benjamin has "looked great" on the field.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin reportedly arrived at OTAs overweight and not in the best shape, but he hasn't had a history of weight issues. His size makes him a touch matchup, especially in the red zone, and Benjamin can be drafted as a low-end WR2.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin trying to shape up

Mon, 08 May 2017 13:08:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been receiving extra treatment at the Panthers' facility for purposes of general fitness and well-being, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Much was made of Benjamin's physique last week when he reported for offseason activities overweight and out of shape.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has a large frame as is, but the reported 280 pounds is too much. Whether or not that number was true is one thing, but Benjamin is trying to get into football shape. Assuming he can do so, he's a WR2 candidate again this year. He achieved WR2 status in 2014 and 2016.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's option exercised

Tue, 02 May 2017 11:12:14 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth-year option was picked up Tuesday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: It's ironic that Benjamin's option was "exercised" just a few days after reports that Benjamin has ballooned to 280 pounds this offseason. Benjamin has a big frame, but he'll need to drop significant weight before the season starts. If he can get back into shape he'll warrant WR2 consideration, but don't be surprised to see WR3 numbers or worse from him at the end of the season. The stars just aren't aligned with Benjamin's physique and Cam Newton's perpetual erroneousness.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's weight causing concern

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 17:50:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is overweight, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and it's a concern. Benjamin, listed at 6-5, 245 pounds, was rumored to weigh 280 pounds, but Rivera disputed the report. He did not offer a specific weight, but he said Benjamin is a "little heavy" right now and is working hard to lose the weight.

Fantasy Tip: KB is a big dude, so weighing north of 250 isn't that much of a concern, but 280 is a big tight end in today's NFL. Assuming he manages his weight properly, there is no reason to be overly concerned this time of the year. Benjamin is a WR2 in most fantasy setups.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's option to be exercised

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 09:36:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth year option for the 2018 season will be picked up, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin missed the entire 2015 season due to injury and faded after a strong start in 2016, but he's still the best receiver the Panthers have. He'll be two years removed from ACL surgery at the start of the 2017 season, although he needs a healthy Cam Newton to realize his full potential. If Newton is good to go by Week 1, Benjamin can be considered a fantasy WR3 with big upside.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin deadline looming

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 06:41:33 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has a May 2 deadline for the team to pick up his fifth-year option, which figures to be around $8 million.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin had 10 fewer catches for 67 fewer yards and two fewer touchdowns last season than in his rookie year in 2014. It was a 63-941-7 line, which is not bad at all, but it puts him in the low-end WR2 range. Was this a microcosm of him returning from a torn ACL, or is Benjamin just not on the WR1 path he projected towards? This year will likely answer that. His yards per reception jumped more than a yard to 14.9 yards per catch, and he presents a solid choice as a midrange WR2.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin posts 93 yards, TD

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 19:56:18 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin rolled up six receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown on seven targets in the Week 17 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin disappeared for fantasy owners when it mattered most in the fantasy playoffs (Week 13 through 15), posting just five grabs for 49 yards and no scores in three games. He finished up the final two games with 10 grabs for 158 yards and two touchdowns, but overall it was a disappointing season for Benjamin and his fantasy owners.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) posted four receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown in the Week 16 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He was targeted eight times.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin was on the injury report this week with a back injury, but he shined through with his best stat line since mid-September. It was a good finish for fantasy owners who continued to trust him through thick or thin.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin practices in full

Thu, 22 Dec 2016 11:20:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has caught only five of the 17 targets thrown to him over the last three games and has been held to 20 yards or less in each of those games. Owners may want to consider benching Benjamin if they have better options but could also use him as a low-end No. 3 receiver or a flex option.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin listed as limited

Wed, 21 Dec 2016 14:41:05 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin should be able to play in Week 16 but has not been a big factor over the last few weeks. He has recorded only five catches 49 yards in his last three games. Benjamin could be a No. 3 receiver or a flex option in some leagues, but owners should also keep him on the bench if they have better options.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin posted just two catches for 20 yards in the Week 15 game against the Washington Redskins Monday, Dec. 19. He was targeted four times.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin active Monday

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 16:46:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) is active Monday, Dec. 19, against the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Benjamin will be shadowed by Josh Norman, but that could very well be the case. A possible Norman shadow combined with Benjamin coming off the back ailment makes Benjamin a less than attractive start.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin questionable

Sat, 17 Dec 2016 10:17:31 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) fully participated in practice Saturday, Dec. 17, and is listed as questionable for Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin appears to be on track to play in Week 15, but owners will need to keep an eye on his status. He has been limited to three catches and 29 yards in the last two games but has been targeted at least six times in four of his last six games. Owners probably can consider him a low-end No. 3 receiver or a flex option this week.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin still limited

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 18:44:30 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) remained a limited participant in practice Friday, Dec. 16.

Fantasy Tip: There has been no indication that Benjamin is in jeopardy of missing Monday's game against Washington. However, his recent slump and a matchup with Josh Norman make him a risky WR3 in Week 15.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin limited at practice

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 20:09:49 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (back) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has had three catches or less in four straight games. He is a risky play in Week 15, but he has enough upside to take a chance on as a WR3.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin not benched for poor effort

Mon, 12 Dec 2016 09:45:53 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin was not benched in a Week 14 win against the San Diego Chargers despite not play in the last series and a half, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Instead, Rivera suggested personnel groupings were to blame for his absence.

Fantasy Tip: It was speculated Benjamin was pulled from the game after not attempting to run down two interceptions which were eventually called back. Rivera later explained that Benjamin believed that both plays were over at the point of the interception. Either way, Cam Newton didn't target him after the second interception. Benjamin has tailed off in a big way since a fast start and can't be considered any more than a low-end WR3 next week when he is sure to see a lot of Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin quiet in Week 14

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 15:29:27 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin caught one pass for 11 yards against the San Diego Chargers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has been held to three catches and 29 yards in the last two games even though he was targeted 13 times during that span. He will continue to be a solid part of the passing game but may only be a flex option at this point.

Panthers | Too much too soon for Kelvin Benjamin?

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 10:22:36 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has scored only once since Week 4 and failed to catch more than three passes in any of his last three games. When asked about the team's top receiver Monday, Dec. 5, head coach Ron Rivera said, "Maybe we did get him out there too soon, too much (after last year's torn ACL)."

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what exactly led to this moment of public reflection from Rivera, but Benjamin has actually been more efficient with his targets this year than he was as a rookie. Greg Olsen's production has also fallen off a cliff recently as well, suggesting the injuries on the offensive line - which may or may not be having a profound effect on Cam Newton - and the defensive struggles may be conspiring to keep the offense from realizing its full potential. Benjamin is a WR3 until further notice.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday, Nov. 30, due to a shoulder ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Benjamin as the week of practice goes on. He might be able to play, but he faces a very difficult matchup for fantasy owners against a strong Seattle pass defense.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin pouts, scores TD

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 22:39:36 -0800

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin posted two receptions for 53 yards in the Week 12 game against the Oakland Raiders, including a 44-yard touchdown in the second half. He was targeted six times.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin stomped off the field, threw his helmet and berated a coach in the second half after apparently being pulled. However, he regrouped and salvaged his stat line with a long touchdown in the final quarter. He remains more of a low-end WR2 heading into Week 13 at Seattle.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin upset on sideline

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 15:47:04 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin left the Week 12 game against the Oakland Raiders late in the third quarter, apparently due to a benching rather than injury. He slammed his helmet down and was yelling at someone on the coaching staff as he was pulled from the field.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has not recorded a catch nearing the end of the fourth quarter, and apparently he isn't happy about not being included in the game plan. The Panthers have erased a 24-7 deficit to take a 25-24 lead, so the Panthers aren't likely to change the way they're operating to please Benjamin.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (shoulder) finished with three catches for 56 yards in a 23-20 win over the New Orleans Saints Thursday, Nov. 17. He briefly left to have his left shoulder evaluated, but he was able to return.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin underwhelmed against a beatable New Orleans defense, but the good news is that his injury wasn't serious. He should be safe to deploy as a WR2 against the Raiders in Week 12.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin caught seven passes for 84 yards in Week 10 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He lost a fumble after the ball was stripped by Chiefs CB Marcus Peters.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin expanding his game

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 21:04:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been working on becoming more effective in the short passing game and on improving his yards after catch.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has WR1 upside because of his big-play ability, but you should expect WR2 production against the Chiefs in Week 10.

Panthers | Seven targets for Kelvin Benjamin

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 20:03:08 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin hauled in seven receptions for a team-high 76 yards on seven targets in the Week 9 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has posted at least 70 yards in each of the past four games, but he hasn't visited the end zone since Week 4. He remains more of a WR2 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 10 against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin finishes for 73 yards

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 14:44:27 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin caught two passes for 73 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has been pretty consistent this season but probably saw only five targets in Week 8 because of the team's early lead. He will be one of the top targets in the passing game moving forward and can be a No. 2 receiver for fantasy owners.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin targeted 14 times

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 18:11:18 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) posted eight receptions for 86 yards in the Week 6 game against the New Orleans Saints, and he was targeted 14 times.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin was on the injury report with a knee this week, but he did not show any ill-effects of the injury. He has 13 grabs for 156 yards on 23 targets over the past two games after a couple of poor outings in Week 3 and 4. He remains a solid fantasy option in all leagues going forward, although you'll need to make alternate plans in Week 7 with the team on a bye.

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 09:07:05 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is expected to play Sunday, Oct. 16, against the New Orleans Saints, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin listed as questionable

Fri, 14 Oct 2016 11:02:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) has been listed as questionable for Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints after getting in a second straight limited practice Friday, Oct. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin should be fine for a potential shootout Sunday. Benjamin has been a slight disappointment since starting out the season on fire in the first two weeks, and this game should give him his best shot at yet at matching that level of production. Consider him a high-end WR2 with WR1 upside this weekend.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin back at practice

Fri, 14 Oct 2016 07:46:05 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) returned to practice Friday, Oct. 14, after a maintenance day.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin had two big weeks to open the season and has been relatively quiet since then. However, he has a salivating matchup against the hapless New Orleans Saints defense this week. He's WR2 material in fantasy this week.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin listed as limited

Thu, 13 Oct 2016 12:13:30 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin appears to be dealing with knee soreness but should have a good chance to play in Week 6. He has recorded 308 yards and four touchdowns over the first five games of the season and should be considered a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in most fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin bounces back

Mon, 10 Oct 2016 21:49:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin posted five grabs for 70 yards in the Week 5 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, Oct. 10. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin had managed just three catches for 40 yards on eight targets over the past two games, disappearing from the offense. He had a nice rapport with Derek Anderson and could have even better numbers against a poor New Orleans pass defense in Week 6.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin finds the end zone

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 15:07:57 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin caught three passes for 39 yards and one touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin started the season off strong but has only 39 yards over the last two games. He still has four touchdowns in four games this season and should continue to be the No. 1 receiver for the team. Benjamin should be considered a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in most fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin to be more involved?

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 15:18:34 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin could be more involved going forward after not catching a pass in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings. He was only targeted once. "We've got to find a way to get him the ball more. That starts with me," offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. "But we've got to make sure we're doing it in a way that we're not just trying to force him the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin had been on fire before the dud on Sunday. It was more than likely an anomaly for Benjamin against one of the better defenses in the league. He'll face a more mediocre pass defense in the New York Giants on Monday night next week. Yesterday's performance may cause some angst, but Benjamin is still a WR2 candidate.

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin racked up seven receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: So far Benjamin's return from a devastating knee injury has been a good one, as he has three scores in two weeks. Many experts downgraded Benjamin on their fantasy boards due to concerns about his conditioning in the preseason, but he is proving his detractors wrong. He has re-emerged as a must-start in all fantasy formats.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin in more than anticipated

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 11:54:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin played "about 15 more snaps" than head coach Ron Rivera would have liked in the team's season opener Thursday, September 8, against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: That's understandable, as Benjamin missed all of last season after tearing the ACL in his left knee, and is being eased back into action as a result. However, based on his terrific season-opening performance in which he looked like he had never left, perhaps Rivera will stick with the same strategy in terms of Benjamin's usage going into Week 2. The 2014 first-round draft pick played in about 70 percent of the team's snaps versus Denver.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin scores in return

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 21:12:48 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin had six catches on 12 targets for 91 yards and a touchdown in a 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: After missing all of last year, Benjamin immediately regained his role as Cam Newton's favorite receiver. If the opener was any indication, Benjamin's knee is just fine and WR2 production should be on tap.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin to see 30-35 snaps

Wed, 07 Sep 2016 07:03:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin could be reduced to 30 to 35 snaps per game this season, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Benjamin averaged 57.8 snaps per game during his rookie season before he missed last year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Rivera said Benjamin's injury and the development of other players in the passing game are contributing factors to reducing his playing time. Benjamin is still rounding into football shape and Rivera doesn't want to push him too hard.

Fantasy Tip: For lack of a better term, the move is somewhat crippling to KB's fantasy value. He could still be worth a WR3 in a limited role, but the borderline WR1 he was his rookie season is likely out of the question.

Panthers | Decreased role for Kelvin Benjamin?

Tue, 06 Sep 2016 11:10:13 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin may not receive as many snaps as he did in his rookie season, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera wants to spread the playing time around more.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is still regarded as Carolina's top receiver, but the Panthers may want to conserve him more this year in order to keep him healthier. Devin Funchess seems primed for a breakout season and should be viewed as a high-end WR3 opposite Benjamin. Benjamin is still in WR2 territory.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will have snap count

Mon, 05 Sep 2016 13:19:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will play about 35 snaps in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Ron Rivera, but he could see more.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin and Carolina's passing offense will face arguably the best defense in the league, still, in the Denver Broncos this Thursday night. With Benjamin not at full healthy and on a snap count he may be a risk as a WR2 or better. Starting him as a flex would be ideal.

Panthers | Devin Funchess pushing Kelvin Benjamin

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 12:14:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has really impressed wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl this offseason. Proehl said Funchess is playing at a level that is forcing WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) to keep up and get better. "To be honest with you, where Devin is right now and where Kelvin needs to get to, I think Devin is pushing Kelvin," Proehl said. "He's realizing, 'I've got to get back, I've got to push, because [Funchess] is pretty dang good.' Proehl did admit that Benjamin is still fully recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, however.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin and Funchess seem destined for a dynamic 1-2 punch in 2016, as long as they can stay on the field. The Panthers have no shortage of big targets near the end zone, including Benjamin and Funchess. Benjamin looked good in his first preseason action last week. He's a WR2 option, while Funchess is still more of a low-end WR3 to high-end WR4 consideration.

Panthers | No brace for Kelvin Benjamin

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 13:11:30 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) doesn't plan on wearing a brace to protect the torn anterior cruciate ligament he's healing from. Benjamin said a brace feels uncomfortable. Head coach Ron Rivera agrees with the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin isn't quite at full health, but he should be there at least close when the regular season commences. He's the Panthers' top wideout even after missing last season, but caution should still be used. It's best to draft Benjamin as a low-end No. 2 wide receiver.
