Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin proving doubters wrong

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 22:26:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin racked up seven receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: So far Benjamin's return from a devastating knee injury has been a good one, as he has three scores in two weeks. Many experts downgraded Benjamin on their fantasy boards due to concerns about his conditioning in the preseason, but he is proving his detractors wrong. He has re-emerged as a must-start in all fantasy formats.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin in more than anticipated

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 11:54:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin played "about 15 more snaps" than head coach Ron Rivera would have liked in the team's season opener Thursday, September 8, against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: That's understandable, as Benjamin missed all of last season after tearing the ACL in his left knee, and is being eased back into action as a result. However, based on his terrific season-opening performance in which he looked like he had never left, perhaps Rivera will stick with the same strategy in terms of Benjamin's usage going into Week 2. The 2014 first-round draft pick played in about 70 percent of the team's snaps versus Denver.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin scores in return

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 21:12:48 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin had six catches on 12 targets for 91 yards and a touchdown in a 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: After missing all of last year, Benjamin immediately regained his role as Cam Newton's favorite receiver. If the opener was any indication, Benjamin's knee is just fine and WR2 production should be on tap.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin to see 30-35 snaps

Wed, 07 Sep 2016 07:03:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin could be reduced to 30 to 35 snaps per game this season, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Benjamin averaged 57.8 snaps per game during his rookie season before he missed last year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Rivera said Benjamin's injury and the development of other players in the passing game are contributing factors to reducing his playing time. Benjamin is still rounding into football shape and Rivera doesn't want to push him too hard.

Fantasy Tip: For lack of a better term, the move is somewhat crippling to KB's fantasy value. He could still be worth a WR3 in a limited role, but the borderline WR1 he was his rookie season is likely out of the question.

Panthers | Decreased role for Kelvin Benjamin?

Tue, 06 Sep 2016 11:10:13 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin may not receive as many snaps as he did in his rookie season, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera wants to spread the playing time around more.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is still regarded as Carolina's top receiver, but the Panthers may want to conserve him more this year in order to keep him healthier. Devin Funchess seems primed for a breakout season and should be viewed as a high-end WR3 opposite Benjamin. Benjamin is still in WR2 territory.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will have snap count

Mon, 05 Sep 2016 13:19:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will play about 35 snaps in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Ron Rivera, but he could see more.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin and Carolina's passing offense will face arguably the best defense in the league, still, in the Denver Broncos this Thursday night. With Benjamin not at full healthy and on a snap count he may be a risk as a WR2 or better. Starting him as a flex would be ideal.

Panthers | Devin Funchess pushing Kelvin Benjamin

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 12:14:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has really impressed wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl this offseason. Proehl said Funchess is playing at a level that is forcing WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) to keep up and get better. "To be honest with you, where Devin is right now and where Kelvin needs to get to, I think Devin is pushing Kelvin," Proehl said. "He's realizing, 'I've got to get back, I've got to push, because [Funchess] is pretty dang good.' Proehl did admit that Benjamin is still fully recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, however.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin and Funchess seem destined for a dynamic 1-2 punch in 2016, as long as they can stay on the field. The Panthers have no shortage of big targets near the end zone, including Benjamin and Funchess. Benjamin looked good in his first preseason action last week. He's a WR2 option, while Funchess is still more of a low-end WR3 to high-end WR4 consideration.

Panthers | No brace for Kelvin Benjamin

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 13:11:30 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) doesn't plan on wearing a brace to protect the torn anterior cruciate ligament he's healing from. Benjamin said a brace feels uncomfortable. Head coach Ron Rivera agrees with the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin isn't quite at full health, but he should be there at least close when the regular season commences. He's the Panthers' top wideout even after missing last season, but caution should still be used. It's best to draft Benjamin as a low-end No. 2 wide receiver.

Panthers | Devin Funchess to be the top dog?

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 20:21:12 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess could outperform WR Kelvin Benjamin this season, according to beat writer David Newton.

Fantasy Tip: Funchess posted a touchdown in the preseason opener, and Benjamin is reportedly struggling with his conditioning. It's very early in the process, but fantasy owners in early-draft leagues who picked Funchess in the middle rounds might be very pleased with that prognostication. Funchess has plenty of upside but remains a low-end WR3 or flex play in most leagues until he proves drops will not be a problem again.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin still not in shape

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 16:57:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is "struggling with conditioning", according to head coach Ron Rivera, who added his goal is to see Benjamin be able to handle 30 to 35 snaps by the end of the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: It shouldn't come as a surprise that Benjamin isn't quite ready yet coming off of last year's ACL tear, but this is the kind of report that should sound off an alarm for owners hoping he will pick right back up where he left off as a rookie. Benjamin benefited from a lot of negative game scripts in 2014 and the Panthers have already hinted they plan to spread it around in the passing game, so owners should treat him as a high-risk WR2.
