Jaguars | Blake Bortles was ready to start

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 11:18:38 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was ready to be the team's starting quarterback, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bortles was rusty in his first NFL start but provided signs of life in a previously dormant Jaguars' offense.

Fantasy Tip: Don't rely on Bortles to be your starting quarterback just yet. In fact, he should remain a low-end QB2 at best throughout the season. He just doesn't have the necessary supporting cast to be a weekly starter. Though, he may be able to provide a spot start or two.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles could stretch field

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 18:19:15 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed four passes of more than 20 yards after he relieved QB Chad Henne in the second half of the team's Week 3 game.

Fantasy Tip: Even at the cheap price of $5,000 (10% of cap) at FantasyScore, Bortles is a very risky play in Week 4 against a solid San Diego defense. However, the speedy Allen Hurns could make an affordable upside pick if Bortles continues to take shots down the field. Hurns will take up 11.8% of the cap ($5,900) in Week 4.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles could save club money

Tue, 23 Sep 2014 03:06:21 -0700

Assuming Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles remains the starter, the team could save $1.25 million in salary cap space this season. This is because QB Chad Henne would not hit playing-time incentives in his contract.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to start Week 4

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 14:42:33 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said Sunday, Sept. 21, that QB Blake Bortles will start in Week 4 against the San Diego Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles came on for the ineffective Chad Henne and completed 14 of his 24 passes for 223 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while also running twice for 30 yards. He might be worth a look in FantasyScore if the price is right, but as a rookie expect some mistakes, too.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles enters game

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 11:45:55 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles entered the team's Week 3 game in the second half after QB Chad Henne was benched.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Bortles will keep the job or if Henne will get another start. Owners should monitor the situation during practice next week, but neither quarterback should be an option for most owners at this point.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles whispers begin

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 07:03:44 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was not considered to play in Week 2 as QB Chad Henne was sacked 10 times in the game. However, head coach Gus Bradley wouldn't comment on whether they will consider starting Bortles in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles would be an intriguing matchup play if he were to be anointed the starter.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles improving in practice

Sat, 13 Sep 2014 05:21:32 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has a great attitude and is showing signs of improving in practice, according to head coach Gus Bradley. "I go back to that individual period that has been really helpful to him," Bradley said. "He just had another one today. I think those periods and going against the defense to see the different looks. The challenge is sometimes we're telling him where to look to go with the ball. Maybe he doesn't follow his progression but his footwork, his throws and things like that he's doing a nice job."

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to start

Thu, 28 Aug 2014 13:30:13 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will start the final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a surprise with most starters resting. Chad Henne has already been named starter for the regular season opener, but Bortles could end up starting some games before all is said and done. Still, he's not worth a draft pick at this juncture.

Jaguars | Chad Henne to start in Week 1

Fri, 22 Aug 2014 22:00:13 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will start the Week 1 game ahead of rookie QB Blake Bortles, head coach Gus Bradley said Friday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has more fantasy upside, and the way he has played this preseason it's hard to believe that Bradley will not give the rookie a shot to start the opener. Henne is nothing more than a low-end QB2 in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles works with first-team

Mon, 18 Aug 2014 17:44:36 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles worked with the first-team offense for the first time during practice Monday, Aug. 18, taking three snaps in 11-on-11 drills.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles hasn't disappointed, but the Jaguars continue to bring him along slowly. Chad Henne should open the season as the starter, limiting Bortles' value to keeper leagues at this point.

Jaguars | Pleased with Blake Bortles' progress

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 15:04:29 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has impressed the team with his progress in training camp and the preseason so far, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Fantasy Tip: Barring a catastrophic event or injury to Chad Henne, Bortles will enter Week 1 holding the clipboard on the sideline, and he's expected to sit the bench for most, if not all, of the season. It's nice to see Bortles play well early, but he shouldn't sniff any single-year rosters for fantasy football.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to get first-team reps

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 11:55:30 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will get reps with the first-team in practice next week, as well as in the team's third preseason game Friday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: While Bortles has looked impressive, he does not have much fantasy football value at all outside of keeper leagues.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles solid in second game

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 20:31:24 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 11 of 17 passes for 160 yards in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles isn't worth drafting outside of keeper leagues at this point, but if he continues his solid play, he will be starting for Jacksonville sooner rather than later.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to get first-team reps?

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 14:32:07 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles may eventually receive first-team repetitions, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Bortles does end up as the team's starter, he's not a viable starting fantasy quarterback. It's best to stay away.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles sharp in debut

Fri, 08 Aug 2014 19:29:43 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed seven of his 11 pass attempts for 117 yards in his team debut in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 8, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bortles entered the game with the second team to a huge ovation.

Fantasy Tip: It was just one preseason game against a smattering of starters, backups and rookies, but Bortles certainly looked like the best quarterback on the field for either side. It is not clear if he will win the starting job in Week 1, but he clearly has a bright future. Fantasy owners will want him as a low-end QB2 if he can secure the starting gig.

Jaguars | OC happy with Blake Bortles

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 10:24:31 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles worked on his development and has progressed faster than originally anticipated, according to offensive coordinator Judd Fisch. "I think that one of the things you always worry about is how does a guy handle something that he's never done before. He's had OTAs and minicamp and then now he's got four weeks to figure out what is he going to do. I thought he really prepared so he came back ahead of where I thought he was going to be," Fisch said.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles' mechanics need fixing

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 08:11:40 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles' lower-body mechanics likely will be revised. Bortles' flaw has been over-reliance on his right arm when throwing; he doesn't use his legs enough. A "redshirt year will help," according to Albert Breer.

Fantasy Tip: With Chad Henne in line to take snaps in Week 1 and hold the job for an extended period when healthy, Bortles is a project that will need plenty to go right in order to produce for fantasy players in 2014. He's an attractive dynasty piece, though, because of his athleticism.

Mon, 21 Jul 2014 00:01:36 -0700

Although the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff is still high on QB Chad Henne, coach Gus Bradley said QB Blake Bortles could start a preseason game. "It would be late in the preseason if he did, and we'll see how things go," said Bradley. "We're really excited about Chad and what he's going to do so we'll see how it goes with him until that fourth preseason game."

Jaguars | Blake Bortles will be ready if needed

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 09:46:32 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he will be ready if needed early in the season, even though the team plans on keeping him off the field in 2014. "I think you have to have the mindset that you have to go out and compete every day," Bortles said. "You want to be the guy. In my situation, whenever my number is called I want to be ready to go and execute the offense just like Chad would. That's my goal, to make sure I'm prepared and ready and continuing to get better."

Jaguars | Chad Henne will start

Thu, 03 Jul 2014 07:40:53 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is the no-doubt starter, according to beat writer Ryan O'Halloran. O'Halloran predicts rookie QB Blake Bortles could be the starter by Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins. Another possibility is Week 12 after the bye week.

Fantasy Tip: Henne is a weak QB2 but could be a worthwhile matchup play at some point. Bortles has little value in single-season leagues right now.

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 10:05:11 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will receive first-team repetitions in training camp to experience "that type of environment," according to Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley.

Fantasy Tip: QB Chad Henne is expected to be the opening-day starter, and Bortles won't see meaningful game action, if all things go as planned. Avoid the rookie in single-year formats.

Wed, 21 May 2014 05:36:35 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley reiterated that the team wants to give QB Blake Bortles a year to develop behind QB Chad Henne. "We really felt comfortable with (Henne) coming back, with a another year in the system," Bradley said. "And I think it gave us flexibility. Then when Blake was there available for us, we really wanted to capture that opportunity. We do feel good about where Blake's at, but we feel like this time that he has under Chad - a year to develop - will be really good in the end result."

Cardinals | Liked Blake Bortles a lot

Sat, 17 May 2014 06:40:44 -0700

The Arizona Cardinals liked QB Blake Bortles leading up to the draft, and thought he could become a franchise quarterback. "Well, you know, we liked Blake Bortles a lot," general manager Steve Keim said.  "We thought, when you looked at his size, his athleticism, his ability to improvise. He doesn't have quite the arm strength that Ben Roethlisberger had but he has some of the same skill set, naturally with his foot speed and athleticism to get out of the pocket and make plays with his feet, as well as stand tall in the pocket and make some of the throws down the field. And he's a guy, being a junior coming out, he still had some developing to do as well but we think his upside is pretty big."

Jaguars | Loved Blake Bortles for over a year

Fri, 09 May 2014 10:52:11 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said he fell in love with QB Blake Bortles during the 2013 college football season but kept it quiet. "This process started early on," Caldwell said. "The quarterback process went early on in the fall last year and he was a guy that I always felt really strongly about, but I never let my intentions known. I let the process play out, and once our coaches got a hold of all the evaluations of our personnel staff, he became the consensus No. 1, without me influencing anybody. It became very clear to us that he was the guy at the quarterback position that we were going to target."

Jaguars | Blake Bortles won't start

Fri, 09 May 2014 09:23:11 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said QB Chad Henne will enter the 2014 season as the starting quarterback, with QB Blake Bortles getting a chance to develop without the pressure of having to win games. "It's such an important position in this league and you want to do it right," Caldwell said. "That's what we're about. ... We have to make it work. We can't just throw him out there. We've seen what happens when that happens."

Fantasy Tip: Bortles shouldn't be on anyone's radar at all during draft season, unless you're in a long-term keeper league.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles selected third overall

Thu, 08 May 2014 17:30:56 -0700

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Central Florida QB Blake Bortles with the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: The Jags throw a bit of a curveball with the big and mobile, but somewhat raw slinger. Jacksonville has said they're comfortable with Chad Henne starting, so maybe Bortles will sit this season. But if he wins the gig, Bortles will only be a low-end backup based on his upside. He seems like a decent fit if OC Jedd Fisch can get something going.
