Jaguars | Blake Bortles tightened up mechanics

Mon, 31 Aug 2015 23:49:51 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles improved his mechanics in the offseason. He shortened his windup, lengthened his follow-through and cleaned up some footwork. The tweaks have improved his accuracy. He's hitting receivers in stride on crossing routes, fitting throws into small windows and putting balls where they're going to be catches by his receivers or incompletions this preseason. He has a 65.0% completion percentage. Bortles has also been sacked just twice this preseason.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles is a QB2 that has the upside to enter the low-end QB1 range.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles shows off legs

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 11:57:02 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles ran for 38 yards on four attempts Friday, Aug. 28, against the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles was second to Russell Wilson with seven rushes of 20 or more yards last season. In total, he ran for 419 yards in his rookie year. If Bortles can improve his passing and maintain his effective running, he'll be a nice sleeper this year, but still shouldn't be drafted as a QB1.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles continues solid preseason

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 21:11:20 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 20 of 29 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown and ran for 35 yards in a 22-17 loss to the Detroit Lions in the preseason Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles is completing 75% of his passes in the preseason and hasn't thrown an interception. Draft him as a mid-range QB2 in seasonal leagues, but he could be worth an occasional start for DFS purposes.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles likes offense

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 15:34:06 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said this year's offense is the best offense he's been a part of in his three years, including college. "I've enjoyed learning it. I've enjoyed trying to master it, and that's what I'll continue to do," Bortles said. Bortles appreciates how offensive coordinator Greg Olson has been able to adapt to different offensive players.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles definitely played like last season was his first, throwing 11 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 14 games. If he does enjoy this offense more and feels more comfortable with it, he should be able to rebound in his sophomore season.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles solid in scrimmage

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 17:13:54 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed eight of his 16 pass attempts for 80 yards and three touchdowns in a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Another year of experience and the addition of tight end Julius Thomas should help Bortles improve in his sophomore season, but expecting him to be more than a mid-range QB2 is a bit ambitious.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles says he's improving

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 15:46:03 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is confident that he is improving heading into his second full season in the NFL. He's learning how to make better throws and decisions while learning the team's new offense. He threw 17 interceptions in his rookie year and was sacked a league-high 55 times. Bortles said his arm became tired down the stretch last year and his mechanics disintegrated. As a result, he trained with quarterbacks coach Tom House in the offseason to refine his mechanics while focusing on shortening his release. Head coach Gus Bradley can tell that the improved mechanics have given Bortles more confidence. In practice Friday, Aug. 7, Bortles threw touchdowns on three straight throws in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles certainly has a much better cast of playmakers surrounding him on offense in his second year, most notably former Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas, who Bortles figures to use a lot in the red zone. Bortles could easily produce QB1 numbers many weeks, but he's a much safer fantasy pick as a midrange QB2 this year.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles struggles Friday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 15:14:58 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles struggled with his ball placement in practice Friday, Aug. 7, according to former general manager Charley Casserly. "I thought his accuracy was inconsistent in practice today but he did flash some big time plays which reminds you of what his potential is," Casserly reported.

Fantasy Tip: The Jags have surrounded Bortles with much better talent than he had in his rookie year, and Jacksonville's offensive line could be much-improved. Look for Bortles to improve upon his 2014 season, but we're not ready to say he's anything more than a midrange backup QB for fantasy owners with upside.

Jaguars | Game slowing for Blake Bortles

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 08:43:30 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said the difference is "night and day" in his readiness between this year and last. He said his head is no longer spinning at the game's pace.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has some weapons at his disposal this year and is a QB2 option with some upside.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles given homework

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 15:40:03 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was given a checklist by offensive coordinator Greg Olson before the Jaguars six-week break in offseason programs. "A lot of it is him homing in on the protections," Olson said. "When he gets back here, we want him to be completely clear on what he's doing at the line of scrimmage in terms of that," said Olson.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has shown improvement already this offseason, according to a variety of sources. Bortles isn't yet in the QB1 conversation, but he should be considered as a top-end QB2, and he will have weeks of being a FantasyScore consideration.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles looking to improve

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 09:47:32 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles worked with throwing coach Tom House and former NFL QB Jordan Palmer this offseason in hopes of tightening his throwing motion and learning to use his whole body when he throws. He indicated his plan was to work out with WRs Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns leading up to training camp and work on his deep throws.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles will be the team's quarterback for the foreseeable future, and the team should be happy that he is trying to improve after he threw 17 interceptions in 14 games last season. Bortles could be a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues but probably will not see much time in starting lineups.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles dealt with injury in 2014

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 09:46:35 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (shoulder) dealt with a shoulder injury near the end of the 2014 season, which affected his ability to throw passes, according to general manager Dave Caldwell. Bortles did not need surgery during the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles did struggle at times last season which led to 17 interceptions but was able to 2,908 and 11 touchdowns in 14 games. His play should improve this season since he knows what to expect and could be a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles progressing

Thu, 18 Jun 2015 18:21:30 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has impressed his coaches with his progression and approach to the game since the end of the 2014 season.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles started 13 games in his rookie season, and he projects to be unchallenged for starts in 2015. Bortles has some new toys on offense, and he has the upside to become a fantasy option, but he'll enter the season as a high QB2.

Jaguars | Jags want Blake Bortles to throw deep

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 13:51:16 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles may be throwing deeper this season, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bradley did say that Bortles hasn't been able to throw deep much during practice so far because of the intensive heat. Bradley added that he wants Bortles to gain more confidence throwing the deep ball.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has the arm strength to be able to throw deep, but he needs to be more consistent with his accuracy. Bortles showed some promise in his largely tumultuous rookie campaign, but he's no more than a bye-week replacement.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles making improvements

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 15:43:02 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is working on lengthening his release and shortening his delivery in an effort to make his release quicker and to be a more accurate passer. "It's hard when you try and change stuff like that," Bortles said. "It's something you've got to think about. Right now I'm in the stage of doing as much as possible so I don't have to think about it anymore."

Fantasy Tip: Bortles was a letdown both for the Jaguars and for fantasy owners in his rookie season last year. He has a solid corps of pass-catchers to throw to this season, including second-year wide receivers Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee and newly acquired tight end Julius Thomas. The supporting cast is there, but Bortles is still a bye-week replacement fantasy quarterback at best.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles' mental game improving

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 08:55:11 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is dealing with struggles better mentally than in the past, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bortles takes things personally too much sometimes, according to Bradley.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has as high of a ceiling as anyone in the '14 draft class. He's a midrange QB2 with upside in his sophomore campaign.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles working on mechanics

Mon, 25 May 2015 08:54:18 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is working this offseason on improving his mechanics to become a better quarterback. He attended 3DQB, which specializes in bio-mechanics motion analysis to help improve quarterbacks' footwork and throwing motion.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles clearly struggled through his rookie season and needs all of the help he can get to improve as an NFL passer. Jacksonville has respectable weapons around him, and it's up to Bortles to do his part. Even with some natural maturation on the field, consider him no better than a QB3 in fantasy leagues.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles worked with QB guru

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 21:54:20 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles worked with quarterbacks guru Tom House during the offseason. Bortles said Tuesday, April 21, that he spent two months in the offseason in California and was mentored by House. Bortles also spent four days throwing to TE Julius Thomas, WR Marqise Lee, TE Clay Harbor and WR Tony Washington. In addition, Bortles dropped 12 pounds from his the end of last season.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles should be much better from a fantasy perspective in 2015, as he'll have a big weapon in Thomas, and he could have WR Justin Blackmon back, too. In addition, he is in good shape and apparently making huge strides. Still, he is nothing more than a QB2 in most standard leagues at the moment.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles endorsed by Gus Bradley

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 17:39:52 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles received an endorsement from head coach Gus Bradley Tuesday, March 24. Speaking at the AFC Coaches Breakfast at the NFL Annual Meetings Tuesday, Bradley said Bortles has impressed since late last season in his approach. "I knew he was tough, but just how tough … And how fast he would take over the team. The team really gravitates toward him offensively, defensively and special teams-wise, and I didn't know it would happen that fast," claimed Bradley.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles threw just five interceptions in the final eight games of the season after starting his NFL career with 12 interceptions in his first six games. Bortles will have several receiving weapons with TE Julius Thomas, WR Allen Robinson, WR Marqise Lee and potentially WR Justin Blackmon. Bortles will be a strong No. 2 option in two-quarterback leagues and will be worth a late-round flier as a backup quarterback in standard leagues.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to keep running

Fri, 06 Feb 2015 09:50:01 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles won't be discouraged from running in his second season in the pros, according to offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Bortles was sacked 55 times in 14 games as a rookie in 2014, and he often held the ball too long in the pocket. He was also second on the team in rushing yards, though, with 419. "When a play does break down protection-wise and you have a guy that can go get yards, you don't want to discourage it," Olson said. "There is a time to make something to happen with your feet. For other quarterbacks, that's not part of their makeup. That's a strength of Blake's and we want him to continue to utilize that."

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has a ton of upside in the league. The problem is whether the Jaguars can surround enough playmakers around him to allow him to break out. He'll probably go undrafted in standard fantasy football leagues this year, but he could be a significant waiver wire pickup as a backup QB.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to work out with receivers

Sun, 25 Jan 2015 06:58:34 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he plans to have a passing camp in Southern California in February with his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs in order to work on their chemistry.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles struggled in his rookie season with 17 interception and only 11 touchdowns. He has only one 300-yard game this season and threw for less than 200 yards in six games. Bortles should be considered a low-end No. 2 quarterbacks entering fantasy drafts next season.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles should benefit from new OC

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 12:36:48 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles should be able to develop under new offensive coordinator Greg Olson, according to general manager Dave Caldwell. Caldwell said Olson has the ability to develop quarterbacks and that his style of offense is tailored for young players.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles still has a lot of work to do to become a viable starting fantasy quarterback. The Olson hire is a positive step, but it's still best to avoid Bortles in drafts.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles developed bad habits

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 12:05:00 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles developed bad habits and may need to start over, in the opinion of NFL Films guru Greg Cosell.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has some work to do before he should be considered a viable option at quarterback in FantasyScore contests in 2015. New offensive coordinator Greg Olson should help, but check back as the offseason goes on to see how Bortles is progressing with his new offensive coordinator.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles probable

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 13:33:25 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 26, and is listed as probable for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles will be a facing a Houston Texans defense that has allowed the fifth fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks over the past four games. Bortles should not be a starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles a full participant

Thu, 25 Dec 2014 17:51:36 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles should be under center in Week 17, but he is unlikely to provide much value against a Texans team that shut down Jacksonville's offense in Week 14.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles practices in full

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 11:21:47 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has been pretty inconsistent during his rookie season and has not thrown for more than 210 yards in any of his last five games. FantasyScore owners likely will be able to find better options to use than Bortles this week.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles shows no sign of injury

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 09:10:54 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) completed only 13 passes for 115 yards in the win over the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Dec. 18, but he didn't show any signs of a mid-foot sprain that made him questionable for the game. Bortles was running bootlegs and scrambling all over the field against the Titans. "If I was able to play, I was going to go play like I know how, like I do," Bortles said. "I wasn't going to go out there if I couldn't run around and move and help the offense at all." He finished the game with 50 yards rushing on five carries.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles put up a gritty performance in the win, but his numbers go to show you why he shouldn't be relied on in any fantasy leagues just yet. Unless he has a setback with his foot, he should be fine to play in the season finale.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles starting Thursday

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 14:15:35 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) will start Thursday night.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles ($3,800) is still best left out of lineups with a tough test versus the Tennesee Titans combined with his inconsistent play throughout the year.

Jaguars | Jags happy with Blake Bortles

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 13:11:34 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has earned positive reviews from the team in his rookie season after being thrust into the spotlight early this year. "That is not the case with Blake Bortles," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was told by Jaguars sources. "They believe it is a good decision, a positive decision for the long-term future of the franchise to have him play this year." The Jaguars like Bortles' mental toughness, deep-ball accuracy and late-game poise.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles ($3,800) has taken his share of lumps in his rookie season without much offensive protection around him. He could be a fine QB down the road, but for fantasy football purposes, he's not there yet, and he shouldn't be started Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans if he plays.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles listed as questionable

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 10:30:09 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and is listed as questionable for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: It appears like Bortles has a chance to play in Week 16, but owners will have to check the inactive list. Bortles has a favorable matchup against the Tennessee Titans and only costs $3,800 on FantasyScore, but owners should be able to find a better option.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles looks good in practice

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 13:11:48 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) was jogging, throwing and moving around well while being limited at practice Tuesday, Dec. 16. He showed no signs of being limited by a right mid-foot sprain during the walkthrough session, and head coach Gus Bradley is cautiously optimistic that Bortles will be able to play in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Dec. 18. "I felt good," Bortles said. "It's still sore a little bit. But, I thought I was able to do some stuff and move around. I thought it would've been hard to stand around in a walking boot for another day. … I have a couple more days to get as ready as possible, but I definitely plan on playing."

Fantasy Tip: It's looking increasingly likely that Bortles will suit up for the game against the Titans on a short week. If he is indeed not showing many limitations from his injury, starting him at FantasyScore at $3,800 could pay off handsomely as a sleeper option.

Jaguars | OC thinks Blake Bortles will play

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 10:42:20 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) is expected to play in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Dec. 18, according to offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. Even though Bortles didn't practice Monday, Dec. 15, Fisch is preparing as though Bortles will start Thursday. "As far as I know, it's going to be Blake," Fisch said. The Jaguars will play it by ear and see how much Bortles does in practice these next few days.

Fantasy Tip: It's good news for Bortles, but coming off an injury on a short week usually doesn't spell fantasy football success, especially for a rookie. Even with a great matchup against the Tennessee Titans, risking it with Bortles at FantasyScore doesn't seem like the greatest idea.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles confident he will play

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 10:29:39 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) said his foot felt fine during a team walkthrough Tuesday, Dec. 16, and he is confident he will be ready to play this week.

Fantasy Tip: The matchup is a good one, but it may be wise to look elsewhere this week. It is extremely risky to play Bortles on a short week with the injury issues he is dealing with. Chad Henne ($3,800; 7.6% of cap) would start if Bortles can't go, and is a nice sleeper option this week if he plays.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles out of boot Tuesday

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 07:48:59 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) is out of the walking boot on his mid-foot sprain Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Chad Henne ($3,800; 7.6% of your cap) would start if Bortles can't play. He has a good matchup against the Tennessee Titans, but he would be an unorthodox play on FantasyScore to load up elsewhere.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles doesn't practice

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 17:01:37 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) did not practice Monday, Dec. 15. The Jaguars didn't actually practice Monday, so Bortles' status is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles is dealing with a mid foot sprain, so it's highly unlikely he'll play on a short week against the Tennessee Titans. Chad Henne would likely start in Bortles' absence, and Henne could be a fine sleeper selection at FantasyScore.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles too indecisive

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 15:21:17 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles, who has been sacked 46 times in just over 10 games this year, needs to improve his decision making in the pocket, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bortles has taken a pounding this year partly because he is holding onto the ball too long instead of making a quick throw or throwing the ball away.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles (foot) isn't expected to play Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans because of a mid foot sprain. Avoid him at FantasyScore, but consider Chad Henne a nice sleeper option for the QB position.

Jaguars | Jags continue to struggle with protection

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 15:15:34 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was sacked eight times in the team's Week 15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, which was the fifth game in a row where he was sacked at least five times. Bortles had 10 dropbacks against the blitz, and they lost 17 yards on those plays, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Bortles has been sacked 46 times this year, and the Jags have given up 62 sacks in 14 games, which is one shy of the team record set in 2001.

Fantasy Tip: Luckily for Jacksonville, they'll get a break this Thursday when they face the reeling Tennessee Titans defense. With Bortles out, Chad Henne is likely to start, and he could be a deep sleeper that pays off at FantasyScore for a cheap price.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (foot) is dealing with a mid-foot sprain and is expected to be questionable for the team's Week 16 game.

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 10:38:14 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (shoulder, ankle) has been diagnosed with shoulder inflammation after undergoing an MRI on the shoulder, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bortles also suffered an ankle injury during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles should be able to play in Week 14 despite the injury but could miss some practice time. Bortles has struggled with interceptions this season and has not thrown for less than 200 yards in each of his last two games. Bosrtles probably should not be a starting option for owners this week.

Jaguars | Jags expect more from Blake Bortles

Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:21:30 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles went 15-for-27 for just 146 yards and an interception in the team's Week 12 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, and he hasn't tossed a touchdown in the last two games. Head coach Gus Bradley was critical of the whole offense, but he indicated that the team expects more from the rookie quarterback. Bradley said Bortles has been holding the ball too long in the pocket, and his decision making hasn't been up to par.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has had more rough patches than bright spots in his rookie season, but you can't blame him too much, he's lacking serious weapons on offense. In Week 13, the Jags face the New York Giants, whose defense should allow Bortles to put up much better numbers. Consider Bortles ($4,300) a cheap sleeper option in Week 13.
