Jaguars | Blake Bortles tightened up mechanics

Mon, 31 Aug 2015 23:49:51 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles improved his mechanics in the offseason. He shortened his windup, lengthened his follow-through and cleaned up some footwork. The tweaks have improved his accuracy. He's hitting receivers in stride on crossing routes, fitting throws into small windows and putting balls where they're going to be catches by his receivers or incompletions this preseason. He has a 65.0% completion percentage. Bortles has also been sacked just twice this preseason.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles is a QB2 that has the upside to enter the low-end QB1 range.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles shows off legs

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 11:57:02 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles ran for 38 yards on four attempts Friday, Aug. 28, against the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles was second to Russell Wilson with seven rushes of 20 or more yards last season. In total, he ran for 419 yards in his rookie year. If Bortles can improve his passing and maintain his effective running, he'll be a nice sleeper this year, but still shouldn't be drafted as a QB1.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles continues solid preseason

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 21:11:20 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 20 of 29 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown and ran for 35 yards in a 22-17 loss to the Detroit Lions in the preseason Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles is completing 75% of his passes in the preseason and hasn't thrown an interception. Draft him as a mid-range QB2 in seasonal leagues, but he could be worth an occasional start for DFS purposes.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles likes offense

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 15:34:06 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said this year's offense is the best offense he's been a part of in his three years, including college. "I've enjoyed learning it. I've enjoyed trying to master it, and that's what I'll continue to do," Bortles said. Bortles appreciates how offensive coordinator Greg Olson has been able to adapt to different offensive players.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles definitely played like last season was his first, throwing 11 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 14 games. If he does enjoy this offense more and feels more comfortable with it, he should be able to rebound in his sophomore season.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles solid in scrimmage

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 17:13:54 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed eight of his 16 pass attempts for 80 yards and three touchdowns in a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Another year of experience and the addition of tight end Julius Thomas should help Bortles improve in his sophomore season, but expecting him to be more than a mid-range QB2 is a bit ambitious.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles says he's improving

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 15:46:03 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is confident that he is improving heading into his second full season in the NFL. He's learning how to make better throws and decisions while learning the team's new offense. He threw 17 interceptions in his rookie year and was sacked a league-high 55 times. Bortles said his arm became tired down the stretch last year and his mechanics disintegrated. As a result, he trained with quarterbacks coach Tom House in the offseason to refine his mechanics while focusing on shortening his release. Head coach Gus Bradley can tell that the improved mechanics have given Bortles more confidence. In practice Friday, Aug. 7, Bortles threw touchdowns on three straight throws in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles certainly has a much better cast of playmakers surrounding him on offense in his second year, most notably former Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas, who Bortles figures to use a lot in the red zone. Bortles could easily produce QB1 numbers many weeks, but he's a much safer fantasy pick as a midrange QB2 this year.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles struggles Friday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 15:14:58 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles struggled with his ball placement in practice Friday, Aug. 7, according to former general manager Charley Casserly. "I thought his accuracy was inconsistent in practice today but he did flash some big time plays which reminds you of what his potential is," Casserly reported.

Fantasy Tip: The Jags have surrounded Bortles with much better talent than he had in his rookie year, and Jacksonville's offensive line could be much-improved. Look for Bortles to improve upon his 2014 season, but we're not ready to say he's anything more than a midrange backup QB for fantasy owners with upside.

Jaguars | Game slowing for Blake Bortles

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 08:43:30 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said the difference is "night and day" in his readiness between this year and last. He said his head is no longer spinning at the game's pace.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has some weapons at his disposal this year and is a QB2 option with some upside.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles given homework

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 15:40:03 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was given a checklist by offensive coordinator Greg Olson before the Jaguars six-week break in offseason programs. "A lot of it is him homing in on the protections," Olson said. "When he gets back here, we want him to be completely clear on what he's doing at the line of scrimmage in terms of that," said Olson.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles has shown improvement already this offseason, according to a variety of sources. Bortles isn't yet in the QB1 conversation, but he should be considered as a top-end QB2, and he will have weeks of being a FantasyScore consideration.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles looking to improve

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 09:47:32 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles worked with throwing coach Tom House and former NFL QB Jordan Palmer this offseason in hopes of tightening his throwing motion and learning to use his whole body when he throws. He indicated his plan was to work out with WRs Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns leading up to training camp and work on his deep throws.

Fantasy Tip: Bortles will be the team's quarterback for the foreseeable future, and the team should be happy that he is trying to improve after he threw 17 interceptions in 14 games last season. Bortles could be a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues but probably will not see much time in starting lineups.
