Titans | Marcus Mariota shines in no-huddle offense

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 10:11:51 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said the no-huddle offense is comfortable for him because of his experience operating it last season and during college. Mariota complete all six of his passing attempts, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to WR Harry Douglas during an 81-yard drive utilizing the no-huddle offense against the Carolina Panthers Saturday, Aug. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota boasts plenty of upside and could emerge as a weekly starting quarterback this season. His ability to pad his fantasy points on the ground is a nice bonus, too. However, he likely won't be the most reliable week-to-week option, so he might be best utilized as a streaming option in favorable matchups. He's best viewed as a late-round target for those who wait at the position.

Titans | Tajae Sharpe has earned trust of team

Sat, 20 Aug 2016 17:18:16 -0700

Tennessee Titans WR Tajae Sharpe has already gained the trust of QB Marcus Mariota and the coaching staff, according to TitansOnline.com senior writer Jim Wyatt.

Fantasy Tip: In case we needed evidence of said trust, Sharpe needed only three drives with Mariota against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday to roll up six catches and 68 yards. He is unlikely to be a big-play threat, but his advanced route-running chops help explain why he led FBS last season with 111 receptions at Massachusetts and are a key reason why he has impressed so quickly in Tennessee. He's well worth a late pick in fantasy as a WR5 with some upside.

Titans | Marcus Mariota mostly sharp against Carolina

Sat, 20 Aug 2016 15:11:14 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota went 9-for-10 for 104 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 20. He added 13 yards on the ground before giving way to QB Matt Cassel early in the second quarter.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota threw a questionable ball that was picked off by Bene Benwikere on the first drive, but he was otherwise flawless, routinely hooking up with rising undrafted free agent Tajae Sharpe during their three drives together. Last year's No. 2 overall pick is 14-for-15 in exhibition play and should be considered as a high-upside QB2 given his efficiency and ability to generate fantasy points with his feet.

Titans | Marcus Mariota sharp in limited duty

Sat, 13 Aug 2016 21:43:13 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota completed all five of his pass attempts for 45 yards in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13, against the San Diego Chargers. He played three series before checking out.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has plenty of athleticism and upside heading into 2016, and he has a much better receiving corps and running game than his rookie season. Still, he should be viewed more as a QB2 in fantasy football in 2016 until further notice.

Titans | Marcus Mariota has rough day

Tue, 09 Aug 2016 09:54:06 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota struggled in the Monday, Aug. 8, scrimmage by throwing an interception and being flagged for a false start. "It's unacceptable, my play today," Mariota said. "I can't be turning the ball over like that. I've got to be putting these guys in better situations. But all in all I'm glad we were able to come out and finish the drives that we did, and we had a pretty good red zone (drill) as well."

Fantasy Tip: He's a second-year quarterback, and mistakes will happen. Mariota's athleticism alone makes him a possible matchup play and a viable backup choice in 2016.

Titans | Marcus Mariota to be turned loose

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 18:29:53 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota won't have a set number of run plays per game, according to head coach Mike Mularkey, but Mularkey said he wants Mariota's running ability to be a threat to opposing defenses.

Fantasy Tip: If Mariota starts running the ball more, his fantasy value could be pushed to another level. For now, consider him a QB2 with tons of upside.

Titans | Marcus Mariota making quick reads

Sat, 30 Jul 2016 20:23:45 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota was praised for his ability to move quickly through his progressions during practice Saturday, July 30.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has a ton of upside entering his second season. He might not reach QB1 status just yet, but draft him as a high-end fantasy backup.

Titans | Marcus Mariota needs to hold onto ball

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 14:12:04 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota fumbled the ball 10 times in 2015, and the team lost six of those fumbles. Mariota said his ball security was something he wanted to work on this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota should play better in his second season as the Titans quarterback, but he will need to keep the ball when he is running. Mariota will have several weapons to work with in the passing game and likely will be a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Titans | Marcus Mariota just wants to win

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 09:40:05 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said he will hand the ball off 40 times if that's what it takes to win. "That's what's important to me, to (give) us an opportunity to win," Mariota said. "Having those two workhorses back there should help us out."

Fantasy Tip: It's not concrete, but it's certainly evidence that the team plans to focus on the run with DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry. Murray could be a low-end RB1 if the offense pans out this way. Mariota still has some progressing to do, and the team looks like it's trying to not put the ball in his hands with the supporting cast he has in the backfield. He's a backup in fantasy. Henry is an RB4 flyer for now with some upside in TD-only leagues.

Titans | Marcus Mariota becoming a leader

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 13:30:32 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota appears to have a better grasp of the offense and has been a true leader during offseason workouts, according to DT Jurrell Casey.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has received praise from various people this offseason and should post better numbers in 2016 since the offense has improved around him. Mariota should be a decent No. 2 fantasy quarterback in most leagues and probably will be more valuable in keeper leagues.

Titans | Coordinator impressed with Marcus Mariota

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 15:11:50 -0700

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie said he has been impressed with what he has seen from QB Marcus Mariota on tape and during practice. Robiskie said Mariota has done a good job learning the offense that the coaching staff is installing.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota played well in his rookie season and finished the year with 2,818 passing yards and 19 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Mariota should improve in his second year and will have plenty of weapons to work with on offense. He should be considered a solid No. 2 quarterback in most drafts but likely will be more valuable in keeper leagues.

Titans | Marcus Mariota can still improve

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 10:48:31 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is expected to improve his pocket awareness in 2016. Mariota was sacked 38 times in his rookie season -- the most of any quarterback who played in 12 or fewer games. "I've really emphasized getting rid of the ball instead of taking sacks," head coach Mike Mularkey said. Mariota has been told an incompletion is OK, and to throw the ball away and move on to the next down.

Mariota's knowledge of the offense is also expected to be improved. Mularkey has streamlined the offense for more simplicity.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota did have hit pitfalls in his rookie season last year, but he mostly impressed in the 12 games he played. He's already one of the better dual-threat quarterbacks in the league. He'll remain solidly in QB2 territory going into 2016.

Titans | Marcus Mariota weight update

Tue, 24 May 2016 16:02:41 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is up to 225 pounds this year compared to the 220 pounds he played at last season, not 210 pounds as previously reported.

Fantasy Tip: As stated earlier, Mariota's added weight, however small it may be, could result in more durability for Mariota, and perhaps more tucking of the football and running. He's one of the better dual-threat quarterbacks in the league and is safely in QB2 territory.

Titans | Marcus Mariota has added weight

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:19:46 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is up to 225 pounds from the 210 pounds he weighed last year. Mariota said he'd like to stay at 225 pounds.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe to assume that most of that added weight is muscular in nature. This could result in more durability for Mariota, and perhaps more tucking of the football and running. He's one of the better dual-threat quarterbacks in the league and is safely in QB2 territory.

Titans | Marcus Mariota comfortable with offense

Fri, 20 May 2016 18:36:16 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has been more vocal this offseason, according to TE Delanie Walker, and he looks more comfortable with the offensive system and is making quicker decisions.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota can't be counted on as a starting fantasy quarterback just yet, but given his upside, he is an appealing QB2.

Titans | Dorial Green-Beckham a top receiver?

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 16:31:39 -0700

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham said he views himself as a No. 1 receiver. He also said he has been talking to QB Marcus Mariota and plans to do some informal work with Mariota before the official offseason programs begin April 18.

Fantasy Tip: Green-Beckham has the physical tools to be a dominant receiver, but he is purely an upside pick at this point. Draft him as a WR4 and hope he starts to realize his potential.

Titans | Rishard Matthews ready to work

Sun, 13 Mar 2016 16:58:25 -0700

Tennessee Titans WR Rishard Matthews said he and QB Marcus Mariota have already been talking about when to meet up and start running routes.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Matthews wants to establish some chemistry with Mariota as soon as possible. He showed some big-play ability with Miami last year, and if he emerges as Mariota's favorite target, Matthews could be a quality WR2 in 2016.

Titans | Marcus Mariota encouraged to run

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 10:20:59 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will be encouraged to run more in his sophomore season by head coach Mike Mularkey.

"Designed runs for the quarterback, and my feelings are he can protect himself much better running the football than he can standing in the pocket, and you've seen it over time. We're not going to run him like they run Cam Newton with some of these designed counter plays and things up the middle that are gonna expose him by any means, but I think he's such a threat in the run game for defenses," Mularkey said.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota looked respectable in his rookie season without many weapons around him, and he threw for 2,818 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 12 games. He has plenty of upside in the NFL and his ability to use his legs is an added bonus. Consider him an attractive backup fantasy QB next year.

Titans | Marcus Mariota praised by Kurt Warner

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 18:31:52 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota was praised by retired QB Kurt Warner. "And I thought he exceeded a lot of expectations," Warner said. "There were things he did really well and made some great decision. There's a lot of things he can build off of, a lot to like."

Fantasy Tip: Although an injury ended Mariota's season early, he showed flashes of his upside throughout his rooked campaign. It remains to be seen how big of a jump he will make as a sophomore, but he is worth drafting as a mid-range QB2 in 2016 for his potential alone.

Titans | Balanced offense for Titans?

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 14:24:04 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will lead what new offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie wants to be a balanced offense next season. Robiskie said the Titans will try to have a balance of run and pass, but that the run-pass ratio would be determined game by game. The new coordinator also said he expects Mariota to make a smooth transition into a redesigned offense, which he promised not to complicate too much for his sophomore quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota held his own en route to a solid rookie season last year, but it's Robiskie's job to get some semblance of a running game going in Tennessee. Antonio Andrews, Bishop Sankey and David Cobb were far from impressive on the ground, forcing Mariota to put the team on his shoulders all too often. Even with a decent rookie season, Mariota shouldn't be considered a weekly starting fantasy quarterback just yet.

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 16:38:41 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) took some dropbacks at less than full speed Monday, Dec. 28, but probably will not be able to play against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17. The team will monitor Mariota's status during practice this week.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is dealing with a medial collateral ligament injury and probably will not play, but owners should still keep an eye out on the situation. Zach Mettenberger would start if Mariota is ruled out but is not a strong fantasy option for owners.

Titans | Marcus Mariota feeling good

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:36:08 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) said that he felt great Monday, Dec. 21, and still looks forward to trying to play in Week 17. The Titans have yet to put him on the Reserve/Injured list.

Fantasy Tip: The Titans don't have further reason to risk a more serious injury to Mariota with their season over, so it seems unlikely that we'd see him in the regular season finale. Zach Mettenberger has a strong arm but isn't as dynamic as Mariota, so you should be downgrading the rest of the Titans offensive weapons these final two weeks.

Titans | Marcus Mariota will be evaluated

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 13:30:22 -0800

Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) has been ruled out for Week 16, but he will be evaluated again afterward. Mariota is dealing with a sprained medial collateral ligament sprain.

Fantasy Tip: An earlier report said Mariota would miss the rest of the season, but the Titans Twitter account seems to indicate that Mariota returning in Week 17 is not out of the realm of possibility. It may behoove the Titans to rest their star rookie quarterback since they won't be making the postseason this year, but Mariota's status will need to be tracked after this weekend.

Titans | Marcus Mariota out for season

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 12:25:17 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) will miss the rest of the season with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his right knee, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Zach Mettenberger will start the last two games as long as he is healthy. He held his own yesterday when Mariota went out, throwing for 242 yards and two touchdowns, but he did also throw two interceptions. Despite a decent game, he's still not a great starting option next week against the Houston Texans.

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 05:49:26 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) is believed to have suffered a minor knee sprain in Week 15, according to a source. With two games left, QB Zach Mettenberger could be under center the rest of the way.

Fantasy Tip: Mettenberger faces the Houston Texans in Week 16 if Mariota can't go. There isn't a lot of fantasy upside with a start that risky at this stage.

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 13:34:49 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's (knee) status for the Week 16 game against the Houston Texans is uncertain at this point, according to interim head coach Mike Mularkey.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota suffered the knee injury during the team's Week 15 game, so owners will need to monitor his practice participation during the week. Zach Mettenberger would start if Mariota is ruled out for the game, but neither player is a strong fantasy option.

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (leg) was having his right leg looked at by trainers in Week 15 against the New England Patriots. He was running up and down the sideline and could return, however.

Fantasy Tip: Zach Mettenberger is replacing Mariota for now, but it sounds like Mariota will be able to return. The Titans will be forced to pass a lot today as they're already down 21-3. Stay tuned for updates on Mariota's injury.

Titans | Marcus Mariota joins rare company

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 18:15:04 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota threw for 274 yards and an interception and caught a 41-yard touchdown in a 30-8 loss to the New York Jets in Week 8, becoming the first play since Walter Payton in 1983 to have a touchdown run, pass and reception for 40 or more yards in the same season.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has flashed his explosive on several occasions this year, but he has also looked like a rookie at times. Expect the lack of consistency to continue for the remainder of the season, making him a boom-or-bust option at FantasyScore.

Titans | Marcus Mariota tops in red zone

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 11:18:00 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota threw two red-zone touchdowns in Week 13, giving him a 120.1 red-zone rating on the year -- highest in the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota had one of his better outings of the year yesterday, throwing three scores and rushing for another. The turnovers have been a problem lately, though, as he has thrown three interceptions over his last two games. Still, he's a fantasy force in his rookie season and should be viewed as a high-end QB2 going forward.

Titans | Marcus Mariota sets record in win

Sun, 06 Dec 2015 23:00:25 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota completed 20 of his 29 pass attempts for 268 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the Week 13 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also led the team with 112 yards rushing on nine carries, and his 87-yard touchdown run broke the franchise's record longest run by a quarterback. The late QB Steve McNair ran for 71 yards in 1998.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has either been really, really good for FantasyScore owners, or he has been subpar, with very little in between. He faces a difficult matchup in Week 14 on the road against the New York Jets.

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 14:50:16 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has thrown eight of his 16 touchdowns when he has faced a blitz this season and has thrown only one interception in those situations.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has had a solid rookie season but has thrown for less than 231 yards in two of his last three games. He will be facing the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13 and could be a decent starting option in some fantasy leagues.

Titans | Marcus Mariota held in check

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 16:43:44 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota completed 16 of his 24 pass attempts for 185 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers. He also ran five times for 24 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has been up and down, but it's all about matchups. He faced a poor New Orleans pass defense last week and chewed them up. He faced a good Carolina pass defense and struggled. He'll face a bad Jacksonville Jaguars pass defense Thursday night in Week 11, so Mariota should rebound nicely in FantasyScore.

Titans | Marcus Mariota draws tough matchup

Sat, 14 Nov 2015 18:25:19 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota faces the Carolina Panthers in Week 10, and the Panthers have intercepted a league-high 13 passes this season.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) is coming off a big game against a bad New Orleans defense, but he will face a much tougher task this weekend. The rookie is too risky to trust at FantasyScore in Week 10.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick excelling in red zone

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 14:39:00 -0800

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown 11 touchdowns to just one interception in the red zone this season. He's tied with Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota for the second-most touchdowns without an interception in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) has been a pleasant surprise since taking over as starter for QB Geno Smith. He has a tough test tonight, however, against a Buffalo Bills defense that only allows 230.25 yards and just over one touchdown per game. He's still worth a look on FantasyScore, but he may not do as well as previous weeks.

Titans | Marcus Mariota explosive in return

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 14:33:02 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) returned to action in Week 9 after missing two games because of a knee injury. He threw for 371 yards, four touchdown passes and no interceptions at the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota responded well to the coaching change and managed all of this without his top receiver, Kendall Wright. The rookie passer remains a matchup play, despite the terrific showing.

Titans | Marcus Mariota probable

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 14:23:58 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 6, and is listed as probable for the Week 9 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) will remain his starting job after missing time because of the knee injury. Mariota will have a favorable matchup this week against the Saints but may not be the best option for owners because he will not have all of his weapons in the passing game.

Titans | Marcus Mariota will start

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 09:56:29 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) will officially return to start in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, according to interim head coach Mike Mularkey. Mariota had a good week of practice and will wear a knee brace in his return.

Fantasy Tip: The Saints are the best matchup for quarterbacks in terms of fantasy points per game this year, so Mariota ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) certainly should be considered as a value pick. However, keep in mind that he's missing his top receiving target in Kendall Wright.

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 16:24:18 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) and WR Harry Douglas (ribs) participated fully in practice Thursday, Nov. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) and Douglas ($2,000, 4.0%) could connect more than usual this week with Kendall Wright sitting. Both are coming off injuries, though, so there is some risk involved. Invest at your own risk on FantasyScore.

Titans | Marcus Mariota has full practice

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 15:48:52 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) should return to action this week as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He's a pretty good option on FantasyScore, too, as the New Orleans Saints have the worst fantasy defense against quarterbacks this year.

Titans | Marcus Mariota to return to practice

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 13:57:01 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (knee) is expected to return to practice Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Mariota has sat out the team's last two games, both losses.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota should be able to return in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, and that's a matchup that should at least have you considering him as a sleeper pick on FantasyScore, even if his mobility remains limited. The Saints defense just allowed Eli Manning to throw for six touchdowns.
