Updating a previous story, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie deal is for four years and $24.2 million. The deal came with a $15.9 million signing bonus.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota should provide some consistency at the helm of a team that started three different quarterbacks one year ago.

Titans | Marcus Mariota's contract a compromise

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 17:20:26 -0700

Updating a previous story, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie deal only contains partial offset language, per a source Tuesday, July 21.

Fantasy Tip: Offset language had been the sticking point in negotiations, so this should be viewed as a win by Mariota's reps. Either way, Mariota and the rest of the Titans can now enter training camp without distractions surrounding their face-of-the-franchise quarterback.

Titans | Marcus Mariota agrees to deal

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 16:32:53 -0700

Tennessee Titans rookie QB Marcus Mariota agreed to terms on his rookie contract Tuesday, July 21. Terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota was the last first-round pick to get his deal done. The completion of the deal comes right before training camp, so now Mariota can really focus on working with his teammates. He is expected to start right away for the Titans, but shouldn't be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback just yet.

Titans | Offset language for Marcus Mariota?

Tue, 14 Jul 2015 16:57:35 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie contract will contain offset language, according to team president Steve Underwood. Underwood said it's important to have the offset language in place because it sets the precedent for the next round of players' contracts.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is still the only rookie not to sign his rookie deal. Once he does sign, he is still expected to be the starting quarterback. Mariota's dual-threat ability gives him added value, but he should still be drafted as a QB2.

Titans | Marcus Mariota's accuracy helping WRs

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 19:01:30 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will help make the receivers more dynamic because of his "unbelievable accuracy," according to WR Harry Douglas. "If you have an accurate quarterback, it allows us to get more yards after that catch," Douglas said.

Fantasy Tip: A successful year from Mariota will undoubtedly lead to a boost in the production for Tennessee's receivers. However, it remains to be seen what the pecking order will be and which receiver will become Mariota's go-to option. Kendall Wright and tight end Delanie Walker are the safest bets and should be drafted in all formats, but Justin Hunter and Dorial Green-Beckham also have some late-round upside.

Updating previous reports, Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie deal is not being held up because of a supposed clause that would forbid him from surfing, according to a source. Mariota has not signed his contract yet due to differences in contract language, according Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota will get a deal done eventually. He's expected to start immediately for the Titans and should be drafted as a backup fantasy quarterback.

Titans | GM not worried about Marcus Mariota

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 13:55:27 -0700

Tennessee Titans general manager Ruston Webster told media he would not mind if QB Marcus Mariota missed a few days of training camp and that it would not be a big deal if he held out. There is a piece of language in the contract holding up what should be a four-year deal worth $21 million.

Fantasy Tip: There are five weeks until training camp starts, so do not expect this to be a big issue. Mariota should be ready as a QB2 at the start of the season.

Titans | Marcus Mariota may not run as often

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 12:00:52 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will be allowed to run at times this season in order to keep opponents on their heels, but head coach Ken Whisenhunt may want to limit Mariota's runs so he can avoid injury. "The league does a good job trying to protect quarterbacks, but any time a quarterback takes off with the ball there's a risk," Whisenhunt said. "Then again, anytime anyone has the ball there's a risk, so I don't think you can get too caught up in it. You just have to be smart. Obviously you don't want him having 30 carries a game because then you really increase that risk."

Fantasy Tip: Mariota likely will enter training camp as the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job. Mariota has some added fantasy value because of his ability to run but still should not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback this season.

Titans | Marcus Mariota deal being held up

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 18:01:10 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is projected to receive a $21 million deal over four years which will be guaranteed by the team. However, he remains the only unsigned first-round draft pick due to a delay finalizing the deal due to a disagreement over offset language.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to start, and the two sides have five weeks to hammer out a deal. Once he is in the mix he will be a decent QB2 for fantasy owners, and he could emerge as a low-end QB1 by season's end if he makes a smooth transition from college to the pros.

Titans | Marcus Mariota ready for camp

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 15:29:28 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said he has been working on learning the playbook and is ready for whatever head coach Ken Whisenhunt asks him to do during training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota should enter training camp as the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job and should win the competition as long as he does not struggle during the preseason. Mariota likely will not be more than a No. 2 quarterback in deeper fantasy leagues this season.

Titans | Marcus Mariota not worried about deal

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 15:12:46 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said he is not worried about his contract situation even though he is only first-round draft pick unsigned at the moment. The two sides do not appear to be close to a deal at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota still has around five weeks to agree to a deal, so he should report for the start of training camp in July. Mariota likely will be the starting quarterback for the Titans this season but should only be seen as a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues this season.

Titans | Marcus Mariota last 1st-rounder unsigned

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 15:20:28 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is the only unsigned first-round draft pick as of Friday, June 19. Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean said a deal will get done and that there's plenty of time to do so before training camp commences.

Fantasy Tip: There hasn't really been any indication as to why it's taking so long to get a deal done. He's expected to start right away in his rookie year and has impressed this offseason, but he should still be regarded as a backup fantasy quarterback.

Titans | Marcus Mariota showing nice accuracy

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 10:37:17 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has received nothing but rave reviews during the team's offseason workouts, and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson was the latest to praise the young quarterback, saying "he is deadly accurate." "No. 1, it's his accuracy. No. 2, he's come in and grasped the offense. And No. 3 is the way the guys respond to him, the way he's able to go in that huddle and take control," Jefferson said. Mariota is developing a rapport with all of the team's receivers during workouts, and the wideouts love working with him.

Fantasy Tip: Take all of the offseason praise on the rookie with a grain of salt. Most top-tier athletes look great without pads during non-contact drills. It's promising for Mariota, who many believe will struggled to adapt to a pro-style offense coming from a spread attack in college. Regardless of how good he looks now, he's sure to have big ups and downs in his rookie season. The offseason praise shouldn't convince you to value him as anything more than a weak QB2 in 2015.

Titans | Marcus Mariota to run shotgun

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 15:02:32 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will have his transition to the NFL helped along by joining a Titans team that ranked sixth in the league in snaps out of the shotgun in 2014. Titans quarterbacks coach John McNulty said the team would prefer to operate from the shotgun formation "probably 50 or 60" percent of the time in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota excelled in the spread offense out of the shotgun formation at Oregon, and the Titans seem to want to use a similar system. Mariota should be able to stay healthier, and he'll be able to use his mobility this season. If both those cases materialize, Mariota could emerge as a FantasyScore option or a bye-week stream option later in the season.

Titans | Marcus Mariota performing well

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 11:17:08 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has shown impressive arm strength and confidence in running the offense during organized team activities, in the opinion of The Tennessean's Jim Wyatt.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota probably will compete with Zach Mettenberger for the starting quarterback job during training camp but likely is the leading candidate at this point. Mariota probably should be seen as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback at best if he wins the job.

Titans | Marcus Mariota impressing

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 06:30:44 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has looked better than expected with his arm strength and confidence in the offense, according to beat writer Jim Wyatt.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has promise, but we're not expecting a lot in Year 1. He's worth selecting as a midrange QB2 in dual-QB leagues.

Titans | Marcus Mariota throwing well in OTAs

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 14:27:29 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has impressed during organized team activities, especially with throwing on the run. Quarterbacks coach John McNulty said Mariota is able to throw well while running because of his easy, natural athleticism. McNulty cited Mariota's footwork, fluidity and quick release as attributes that help him throw well on the move.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is a stellar athlete, and when he can combine that athleticism with accuracy, it makes for a deadly combination. He'll still have some learning curves, naturally, as he becomes accustomed to professional football, but the talent and work ethic are there. Take Mariota as a QB2 in traditional formats.

Titans | TEN studying offenses for Marcus Mariota

Thu, 28 May 2015 15:00:05 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is receiving some aide this offseason as the Titans are trying to at least somewhat emulate the offensive styles of the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals. The Eagles and Dolphins follow an up-tempo style while the Bengals use more of a spread offense.

Fantasy Tip: The Titans are doing whatever it takes to make sure Mariota is comfortable with the offense in his inaugural NFL season. His dual-threat ability and a receiving corps that includes Kendall Wright, Justin Hunter and Hakeem Nicks should give Mariota plenty of opportunities to find success. He should still be drafted as a backup fantasy quarterback, however.

Titans | Marcus Mariota impresses with speed

Wed, 27 May 2015 08:45:08 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has impressed teammates with his speed in their opening day of organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Titans LB Zach Brown, who is known for his speed, was particularly impressed. "One time he took off – I was guarding Delanie (Walker) – and I turned around and I was like, 'Where is he?' He is fast. He impressed me. He is still a rookie and he has to learn, but he is a cool guy. I haven't seen him get frustrated yet," Brown said.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota will have to flop to lose the starting job. His raw athleticism should make him a QB2 with playability against the right teams. He's best left for daily play at FantasyScore.

Sun, 17 May 2015 10:58:06 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to begin contract talks with the team Monday, May 18, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has a good chance of winning the starting quarterback job over Zach Mettenberger during training camp. Even if he starts, Mariota is probably not more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in 2015.

Titans | Dorial Green-Beckham connecting with QB

Fri, 15 May 2015 18:58:28 -0700

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham said he sent a text to QB Marcus Mariota right after he was drafted and is trying to become close with the quarterback in a hurry. "I told him, every time you're in the weight room, make sure you bring me," Green-Beckham said.

Fantasy Tip: Green-Beckham has elite size and athleticism, but it remains to be seen if he can put a troubled college career behind him and succeed in the NFL. Still, his potential makes him worth a late-round flier in fantasy drafts.

Titans | Marcus Mariota comfortable under center

Fri, 15 May 2015 18:14:27 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said it was different being under center for the first time during rookie minicamp Friday, May 15, but added that he already feels comfortable in the offense.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to open the 2015 season as the starter, but there will likely be a lengthy adjustment period as he learns how to play in a pro-style offense. Consider him a low-end QB2, but he could make strides as the year goes on.

Titans | Marcus Mariota looking good so far

Fri, 15 May 2015 16:19:58 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota survived his first rookie minicamp and impressed the coaches with his understanding of the playbook, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt also doesn't think Mariota's smaller size will create a problem with him taking snaps under center after he participated in a spread offense in his college career. "I don't see that as a problem," Whisenhunt said of Mariota lining up under center. "He's put a lot of work in. He seems pretty good. I mean, until we get into a game and you get the A-gap blitzers in there or people are pressuring, you don't know how they are going to handle it."

Fantasy Tip: Mariota's strengths are his pure athleticism and smarts in the classroom, but will his undersized frame allow him to succeed in the NFL? It remains to be seen. What we do know is it'll be a work in progress in his rookie season, and plenty of growing pains are likely to come in 2015. Mariota is a low-end QB2 in fantasy leagues in his rookie season, with upside for more.

Titans | Defense will test Marcus Mariota

Fri, 15 May 2015 09:13:21 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will be tested by his defense in training camp as assistant head coach Dick LeBeau is under direction to throw everything at the rookie that he can. All indications are that Mariota will have to fail miserably to lose the starting job in the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: The team has said the goal is for Mariota to start as a rookie. He'll have to fend off Zach Mettenberger, but Mariota rates as a midrange QB2.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger to fight for job

Tue, 05 May 2015 10:56:09 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, who is now the backup quarterback to QB Marcus Mariota, did not demand a trade and is adamant about going to training camp with a chance to compete against Mariota for the starting job, according to OT Taylor Lewan. Mettenberger took part in the team's voluntary workout program last Friday and Monday, May 4. Mettenberger was 0-6 in his starts last year as a rookie and threw for 1,412 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Lewan also said Mettenberger lost around 15 pounds this offseason and looks leaner and stronger.

Fantasy Tip: While Mettenberger isn't giving up and could wind up winning the job, it's all in the hands of Mariota now. It's his job to lose heading into Week 1, so Mettenberger won't be a viable fantasy option in fall drafts unless something drastic happens to Mariota.

Titans | TEN offense tailored to Marcus Mariota

Tue, 05 May 2015 10:34:35 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is having the playbook tailored to him after the Titans drafted him with the No. 2 overall pick last week, according to general manager Ruston Webster. "Our coaches have been working on a plan for quite some time now for Marcus," Webster said. "Really to adapting our offense to his skill set -- he has a special skill set. There's really not much he can't do from a physical standpoint and he's very bright. That combination is going to allow him to do his own adapting to the NFL game but our coaches have worked very hard on coming up with a system within our system for Marcus. I think it will work well."

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to be groomed in training camp this summer to be the Week 1 starter over Zach Mettenberger. It remains to be seen how effective Mariota can be while transitioning from a spread offense in college, but quarterback guru Ken Whisenhunt could make a big difference in helping Mariota excel early on. In any event, Mariota will have his ups and downs despite being extremely gifted physically and mentally. Consider him a low-end QB2 with potential for more in 2015.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger wants to compete

Fri, 01 May 2015 11:20:18 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger is not looking for a trade but does want the chance to compete with QB Marcus Mariota for the starting quarterback job, according to his agent.

Fantasy Tip: Mettenberger may receive the chance to compete for the job, but Mariota should be seen as the leading candidate at this time. Owners should watch the competition during training camp, but Mettenberger will not have any fantasy value if he is not the starter.

Titans | Tennessee plans to start Marcus Mariota

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 18:52:07 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is the planned starter from Day 1, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: The Titans will have to find a balance between Mariota's dual-threat ability and Whisenhunt's more traditional pro-style offense, and there will likely be some growing pains. Assuming Mariota ends up opening the season as the starter, consider him a low-end QB2 with some upside.

Titans | Marcus Mariota not likely to be traded

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 17:29:54 -0700

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is not expected to be traded after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick.

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect Mariota to come in and start for the Titans right away, as long as Zach Mettenberger is still in town. He needs time to acclimate to a new system and the change of pace at the NFL level. Mariota is more of a dynasty league/keeper league target at this point.

Titans | Marcus Mariota selected second overall

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 17:19:25 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota was selected second overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Plenty of questions surround Mariota as to whether he can succeed in the NFL after playing in a spread offense in college. His size is another question. With the Titans, he'll surely sit and learn the ropes behind Zach Mettenberger, to start. Mariota will strictly be a keeper-league target in 2015.

The Browns have already reportedly offered their No. 12 and No. 19 overall picks for the Tennessee Titans' No. 2 overall pick.

Fantasy Tip: The Mariota train seems to be losing steam in Cleveland, but you never know. Wherever Mariota lands, he shouldn't be regarded as a starting fantasy quarterback right away.

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 14:44:40 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly being most aggressive in the pursuit of the Tennessee Titans' No. 2 overall pick, undoubtedly for the rights to Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Fantasy Tip: It seems that head coach Chip Kelly really wants his former quarterback in Philadelphia and is doing almost anything to make it happen. Mariota would be an intriguing fantasy quarterback under Kelly and in a system he's familiar with, so keep an eye on this situation as the night progresses.

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 22:12:48 -0700

If the New York Jets had a shot at Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft the latest buzz in league circles is that they would pass on the quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Surely the Jets couldn't believe Geno Smith is better than Mariota. It is likely all academic anyway, as Mariota is expected to go No. 2 overall. However, it would be interesting to see if the Jets really would go another way if the situation arose.

Browns | Cleveland covets Marcus Mariota

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 16:32:06 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is receiving a lot of interest from the Cleveland Browns, and the Browns are looking to move up in the first round. The Browns have been in contact with most of the teams in the top 10 and have talked with the Washington Redskins over the past week. The Redskins have the fifth overall pick in the draft.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to be selected in one of the first few picks in the draft, so the Browns would have to make a significant jump up if they want a chance to add Mariota. Mariota likely would compete with Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel for the starting job during training camp but would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season.

Eagles | Philly pursuing Marcus Mariota?

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 14:54:06 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be selected by the Philadelphia Eagles if the team could make trades with the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans, according to one draft rumor. The rumor states the Eagles would trade QB Sam Bradford to the Browns for the 19th overall pick, then the Eagles would trade DT Fletcher Cox, LB Mychal Kendricks, the 19th overall pick and the 20th overall pick to the Titans for the second overall pick where they would select Mariota.

Fantasy Tip: There have been rumors that the Eagles will try to trade up in the first round for Mariota, but the team will need to move up significantly to have a chance at him. Mariota likely would have a good chance to win the starting job if he joins the Eagles, but would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback at this point.

Jets | Looking to trade up in draft

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 10:27:16 -0700

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan is prepared to explore the possibility of trading up in the 2015 NFL Draft next week, which will obviously fuel speculation that the Jets want to select Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. "We're going to reach out to every team ahead of us to gauge, to get a value for what they're looking for in compensation to move up in the draft," Maccagnan said. "That doesn't mean we're actually trying to go up and get a player, but you (see) what the market value is, basically." The Jets own the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, and it would cost them a lot to move up to No. 2, where the Tennessee Titans currently sit. The Jets have conducted private workouts with Mariota and have had a separate visit with him.

Browns | Cleveland GM talks Marcus Mariota

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 16:27:05 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be pursued by the Cleveland Browns, according to general manager Ray Farmer. Farmer said it is possible that the Browns could package their No. 12 and No. 19 overall picks to trade up for Mariota. "We think we know who he is, we think we know what he's capable of, we think we know where he would fit for us assuming that he was with us," Farmer said.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns and Mariota rumors will likely gain steam as the NFL Draft approaches in just one week. Mariota wouldn't have the best supporting cast around him, but he does have dual threat ability. Still, he shouldn’t be considered more than a backup fantasy quarterback.

Browns | Cleveland aggressive on Marcus Mariota

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 06:36:25 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is receiving the most attention from the Cleveland Browns, who are the front runners to land him, sources have led DraftInsider.net's Tony Pauline to believe. Last week, the Tennessee Titans' asking price for the No. 2 pick in the first round was the Browns' two first-round picks and a second-rounder. The Browns rejected the offer. The Browns may be willing to part with the first-rounders but want to keep the second-round pick to draft a receiver.

Fantasy Tip: Many experts expect Mariota to be taken by the Tennessee Titans with the No. 2 overall pick. A lot can happen within the next two weeks for that to change, however. Mariota should be given at least a year before being considered a fantasy starter, especially if he's with the Rams.

Chargers | SD to trade up for Marcus Mariota?

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 21:04:12 -0700

University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota worked out for the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, April 14, with head coach Mike McCoy, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, quarterbacks coach Nick Sirianni and several front office members in attendance, sources said. The Chargers pick No. 17 overall, and it would be highly unlikely a camp would allow its client to work out for a team that far back without a strong sense a trade up is a real possibility.

Fantasy Tip: If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers elect to pick Mariota No. 1 overall, then all of this is obviously a moot point. But if the Bucs choose Florida State’s Jameis Winston, Mariota would be there at No. 2 and the Tennessee Titans could be the trade partner for the Bolts. Mariota’s fantasy value is murky at this point, as he could be drafted and sit or he could be drafted to start immediately.

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets?

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 14:12:53 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be a target of the New York Jets as the NFL Draft approaches. New York is one team that could trade up with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick.

Fantasy Tip: As it stands, Geno Smith seems to be the top option to start for the Jets, with Ryan Fitzpatrick also in the mix. Obviously, Mariota would give them a run for their money for the starting quarterback position. Whoever starts will be an intriguing target in fantasy leagues with WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker to throw to.
