Browns | Marcus Mariota not visiting Cleveland

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 19:10:47 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is not currently scheduled for a pre-draft visit with the Cleveland Browns, and ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler believes the Browns could be saving one of their 30 in-house visits because quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell already has inside knowledge about Mariota from his time as Mariota's private tutor.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns have two first-round draft picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, and they could conceivably put together a package to move up and draft Mariota. Regardless of where he lands, Mariota would be worth a flier in two-quarterback leagues.

Buccaneers | Marcus Mariota will work out for Bucs

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 10:07:49 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has a private workout scheduled with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers April 7.

Fantasy Tip: The Buccaneers possess the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. It has been widely speculated that Jameis Winston will be Tampa Bay's selection, but nothing is set in stone, of course. Mariota would certainly have some fantasy appeal in Tampa Bay with Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans at his disposal.

Titans | Marcus Mariota worked out for Titans

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 07:41:37 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota worked out for the Tennessee Titans shortly after his pro day.

Fantasy Tip: The Titans may consider selecting Mariota if he is not the first pick in the draft. Mariota would be given the chance to compete for the starting job and could be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he does start.

Redskins | Marcus Mariota may meet with WAS

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 07:37:54 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota may meet with the Washington Redskins before the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: The Redskins do not have a clear starting quarterback, so Mariota could compete for the starting job if he is selected by the Redskins. Mariota would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins a starting job in the league.

Chargers | SD will work out Marcus Mariota

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 07:36:51 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to work out for the San Diego Chargers Wednesday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to be selected early in the first round, so the Chargers likely would have to trade up if they wanted Mariota. The Chargers have Philip Rivers, but he is entering the final year of his contract. Mariota would not be a fantasy option if he joins the Chargers.

Jets | Marcus Mariota in the mix for Jets?

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:58:26 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be hard for the New York Jets to pass on if he were still available at the sixth overall pick, according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

Fantasy Tip: Of course, Mariota would still have to be available for the Jets to draft him, which is far from a given. Mariota could very well be a backup even in New York in his first year, too. Rookie quarterbacks are always risky to roster in fantasy football leagues, unless you'd be willing to save them in a keeper and/or dynasty league.

NFL | Marcus Mariota to go second overall?

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 10:03:34 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will be selected with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, in the opinion of an unnamed NFL general manager that is paying close attention to Mariota's market.

Fantasy Tip: The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 2 pick but they could trade the pick to a team looking for a starting quarterback. Mariota likely will compete for a starting job wherever he goes and would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins a starting job.

Chiefs | Marcus Mariota a fit in KC?

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 14:53:46 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid, even if the team is committed to QB Alex Smith, in the opinion of NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. Kiper cites the success of former QB Donovan McNabb as Reid's quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Mariota is expected to be gone when KC picks at 18 overall, and the Chiefs are unlikely to trade up to take him. Reid said he didn't have a chance to meet with Mariota, either.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota will be nothing more than a weak QB2 in traditional fantasy leagues in 2015, and that's if he winds up with a starting gig. Mariota may be better off used at FantasyScore if he starts at any point next year, with the right matchup, of course.

Saints | Marcus Mariota won't go to Saints

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 13:50:40 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota isn't an option for the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said the Saints will not move up in the first round in order to select Mariota. Payton also said there wasn't "one iota" of truth to rumors that New Orleans is looking to trade QB Drew Brees.

Fantasy Tip: The knock on Mariota is that he played in a spread offense in college that may not translate well to NFL offenses. However, he's likely to go early in the first round to a QB-needy team and compete for a starting job right away. Mariota may be worth a late-round flier in fantasy drafts, but you shouldn't expect much out of him right away.

Buccaneers | Bucs open to drafting QB first overall

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 09:02:57 -0700

Florida State QB Jameis Winston and Oregon QB Marcus Mariota are widely believed to be considered by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, and Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer has approved the team taking either Winston or Mariota with the No. 1 overall selection. "But fundamentally, we believe in letting Lovie and Jason do all their ground work, and their staffs, come to their conclusions, discuss it with us, talk about their reasoning and as long as it makes sense, we're supportive. But at the end of the day, whatever decision we make, I see us all being on the same page, agreeing and moving forward," Glazer said.

Fantasy Tip: The Bucs are widely expected to draft Winston with the first overall pick, and he'll have a decent shot to win the starting job in training camp over Mike Glennon. However, in Winston's rookie year, he might only be worth a late-round flier as a weak QB2.

Redskins | Washington willing to draft QB early

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:30:43 -0700

Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said that the team will go with the best player available in the 2015 NFL Draft with the No. 5 overall pick, which means that they could take a quarterback in that spot. McCloughan could be compelled to take Oregon QB Marcus Mariota if he's available at No. 5, even after the team said QB Robert Griffin III was the team's starter a month ago. McCloughan doesn't think anyone will be handed a job, and they'll have to compete to win a spot.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is the team's starting quarterback right now, but he'll have to earn it in training camp this summer, and that task will become tougher if Mariota is on the roster in July. If Griffin indeed winds up being the starter in Week 1, he'll have to prove himself in the fantasy landscape as well. Consider him a QB2 with upside for more if he stays healthy.

Titans | Marcus Mariota would start for Titans

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 10:01:21 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is a realistic option for the Tennessee Titans with the second overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt is impressed enough with Mariota that he would feel confident with him as the team's starting quarterback over QB Zach Mettenberger right off the bat in 2015. "If we pick him at No. 2, you definitely think he can be the Day 1 starter," Whisenhunt said. "He was impressive. ... Just the short time we spent with him on the board, he was very good." Whisenhunt dismissed the notion that he needs a pocket-based quarterback in his offense to succeed. Whisenhunt could also be trying to generate interest in the No. 2 pick if the Titans would want to trade out of it.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota has all kinds of physical skills that would endear him to NFL teams in the draft. However, he's not believed to be as pro-ready as Jameis Winston because of the spread attack he ran in college. If Mariota is starting in Week 1, he likely won't be anything more than a weak QB2 for fantasy owners in 2015.

Redskins | Washington could trade down

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 16:23:23 -0700

The Washington Redskins could trade out of their fifth overall draft pick in this year's NFL Draft, as teams are increasingly looking to trade up to select Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. "There is speculation that the Jets (at No. 6) could go for Marcus Mariota if he does fall to them. Possibly there's a team that is looking to jump over the Jets and draft Mariota. The Redskins, who we know gave up all those picks to draft RG3, could wind up reaping some of those rewards of trading down at No. 5," NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah said.

Jets | Marcus Mariota needs to develop

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:16:57 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota had an impressive college career, but he is behind New York Jets QB Geno Smith in his development by a significant margin, according to owner Woody Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota could still be an option for the Jets in the first round, but it looks like he would be behind Smith in a possible competition for the starting quarterback job. Owners should consider whoever is the Jets starting quarterback as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season.

Jets | Marcus Mariota to work out for NYJ

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 08:34:51 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to have a private workout with the New York Jets March 28. General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles will attend the workout.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets have not ruled out selecting Mariota if he is available, so there is a chance he competes for a starting job if he joins the Jets. He should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins a starting job next season.

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 08:16:38 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has not been ruled out as an option for the New York Jets' first-round draft choice, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Fantasy Tip: It is known if the Jets have serious interest in Mariota at this point or if they are bluffing, so owners should monitor this situation until the draft. Mariota likely would be given the chance to compete for the starting job if the Jets select him, but he would not be more than a No. 2 quarterback if he wins the job.

Chargers | SD serious about Marcus Mariota?

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:14:22 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to work out for the San Diego Chargers next month, and many around the league are speculating that the team could be serious about trading up for Mariota in the year's draft. The Chargers may be prepared for a future without QB Philip Rivers, as the 2015 season is the final year of his current deal. However, general manager Tom Telesco said that the team isn't thinking of trading Rivers.

Fantasy Tip: The rumors about the Chargers trading for Mariota may be far-fetched. While Rivers should be an acceptable QB1 in many weeks in 2015, Mariota won't be anything more than a weak QB2 in standard leagues in his rookie season, no matter what team he's playing for.

Redskins | 'Skins bluffing on Marcus Mariota?

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 19:39:25 -0700

The Washington Redskins are reportedly interested in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports believes the Redskins are trying to stimulate a trade ahead of the No. 5 pick, pushing another player down the board.

Fantasy Tip: The general feeling is that the Redskins are playing games and aren't seriously interested in Mariota, but you never know. Robert Griffin III has been injury-prone and so-so lately, and Kirk Cousins hasn't taken the bull by the horns when given the opportunity to start.

Chargers | Marcus Mariota in play for Bolts?

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 19:35:50 -0700

The San Diego Chargers might be serious about their interest in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, and numerous people around the league have speculated the team could be serious about selecting Mariota in the 2015 NFL Draft. They are scheduled to work Mariota out next month.

Fantasy Tip: It would be an interesting landing spot for Mariota. Fantasy owners probably wouldn't want to see it, because he would likely be carrying a clipboard rather than hands-on training with Philip Rivers under contract for at least one more year.

Titans | Tennessee will host rookie QBs

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 14:41:35 -0700

Former Florida State QB Jameis Winston and former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will have in-house visits with the Tennessee Titans, although specific dates have not been set yet.

Fantasy Tip: The Titans are hurting at quarterback right now with the retirement of QB Jake Locker. They need a quarterback perhaps more than any team in the NFL right now. With the second overall pick, Winston or Mariota seem to be a lock to join the Titans next season. Assuming one of them does join Tennessee, they should be considered no more than a fantasy backup until they can prove to be more than that.

Buccaneers | Marcus Mariota visiting TB

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 14:28:37 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is visiting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, March 16. He is one of several players that they are considering with the top overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is one of the top overall prospects in this year's draft, but he isn't believed to be as pro-ready as Jameis Winston, who the Bucs are also considering at No. 1 overall. Mariota operated in a spread offense in college, and many wonder if he'll be successful at the next level. If Mariota finds himself starting for a team in 2015, you shouldn't expect anything more than weak QB2 numbers.

Redskins | Redskins eyeing Marcus Mariota?

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 19:20:54 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota won't make it past the Washington Redskins in the 2015 NFL Draft, according to ESPN NFL Insider John Clayton. "Dan Snyder may not think there's quarterback issues; Jay Gruden and everybody else in the front office thinks there's quarterback issues," Clayton said. "And if Marcus Mariota falls to five now it's not a position where they're desperate enough to trade up to get him but if he falls to 5, I'm telling you this right now, they'll take him."

Fantasy Tip: It would be interesting to see how the quarterback situation in Washington works out if Mariota does enter the mix, but it would seem very unlikely he would open the season as the starter for the Redskins.

NFL | Marcus Mariota admits to nervousness

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 21:29:27 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota said he was nervous during his workout at Oregon's pro day Thursday, March 12, and added that he felt his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine was better than his performance at his pro day.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota attempted to showcase his ability to transition to the NFL by working under center during a series of throwing drills, and he admitted that it may not have been his best performance. He should still be no worse than the second quarterback selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but it will be tough to project his fantasy value until he lands with a team.

NFL | Marcus Mariota struggles at pro day?

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 19:50:40 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota called plays from a huddle and took snaps under center as part of his workout during Oregon's pro day Thursday, March 12, and he finished with seven incompletions. Overall, the workout did not go well, according to initial reports.

Fantasy Tip: The biggest question mark for Mariota entering the 2015 NFL Draft is whether or not he can transition from Oregon's spread attack to a pro-style offense, and depending on how much weight teams put into Thursday's performance, it could impact his draft stock a bit.

NFL | Marcus Mariota to meet with several teams

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 15:05:37 -0700

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will meet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans during his Oregon pro day Thursday, March 12, with more meetings expected before the NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: The Eagles may not be the favorite to land Mariota after all with the recent acquisition of QB Sam Bradford. A lot still needs to happen before Mariota's fantasy value can be determined. Keep tabs on his situation leading up to the NFL Draft.

Eagles | Philly won't mortgage future for QB

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:47:21 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is the best quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, according to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, but Kelly said the team will not mortgage the future to trade up to draft Mariota.

Fantasy Tip: While the Eagles may still have interest in Mariota, this is the first time we have heard that the Eagles may not try to make a move up to get him. Wherever Mariota ends up, he should be considered a No. 2 quarterback if he wins the starting job.

Eagles | Philly positioning for Marcus Mariota?

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 20:42:52 -0800

The Philadelphia Eagles might be in position to package several draft picks to move up and draft a franchise-caliber signal caller such as University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, especially after the team cleared plenty of cap room following the trade of RB LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: It's conjecture that is what head coach Chip Kelly is trying to do, but he has been trying to put the Oregon band back together in Philadelphia. He recruited Mariota, and it is hard to believe he isn't interested in getting the QB to run his offense in the NFL.

NFL | Former GM prefers Marcus Mariota

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:53:14 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is probably a smarter long-term option for NFL teams than Florida State QB Jameis Winston is, in the opinion of NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota and Winston likely will be the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but it looks like Winston is a more likely candidate for the first overall pick. Neither quarterback should be considered as more than No. 2 fantasy quarterbacks next season if they win starting jobs.

University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is a player the Philadelphia Eagles are willing to try to move up for in the 2015 NFL Draft, according to Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota's skill set should be a great fit for Chip Kelly's offense, but at this point, Philadelphia moving up to draft him is just speculation.

NFL | Marcus Mariota solid at combine

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 10:25:07 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota showed an easy throwing motion during the NFL Scouting Combine and also showed good deep-ball accuracy. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds and recorded a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-1 broad jump.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is seen as one of the top two quarterbacks available in the draft this season and should be selected in the first round. It is not known if Mariota will be given the chance to compete for a starting job next season, but he likely would be considered as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he does start.

NFL | Marcus Mariota talked with Chip Kelly

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 11:59:37 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has spoken with Philadelphia Eagles head coach, and Mariota's former coach at Oregon, Chip Kelly. Kelly did not indicate that the Eagles had their eyes on Mariota in this year's draft.

Fantasy Tip: There is still plenty of time for the Mariota to Philadelphia rumors to gain steam with the connection between Kelly and his former quarterback. Mariota would probably have more fantasy value if he were to join the Eagles, but it's still too early to speculate one way or the other.

NFL | Marcus Mariota posts good 40 times

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 08:48:46 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota posted unofficial times of 4.52 seconds and 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota should be one of the first two quarterbacks selected in the draft and is a good bet to go in the first half of the first round. It is not known if he will have a chance to compete for a starting job but would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he starts next season.

Browns | Marcus Mariota an option for Browns?

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 13:12:05 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be an option for the Cleveland Browns in this year's draft if they are willing to package their two first-round picks to move up to snag him, according to quarterback guru George Whitfield. Whitfield has worked with both Mariota and Browns QB Johnny Manziel. Both quarterbacks have also been coached extensively by Cleveland quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell could push for the team to move up and draft Mariota. Mariota said he'd welcome the chance to play for any NFL team, including the Browns.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is widely considered the second best pro-ready QB in this year's draft behind Jameis Winston. Wherever Mariota lands, he'll likely be in a QB competition in training camp. It'll be interesting to see whether he can move from a spread offense in college to a pro-style offense successfully. Mariota will be nothing more than a flier in very deep leagues as a QB2 in drafts this year if he wins a starting job somewhere.

NFL | Marcus Mariota talks weakness

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 17:12:41 -0800

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota said at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine that he needs to work on calling plays in a huddle. The Ducks didn't huddle during his time with the team, and he hasn't done so since high school. Mariota would call out signals after the coaching staff held up signs on the sideline.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota, regardless of where he lands, has a long way to go before being fantasy-worthy in traditional setups.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is in the discussion for a top-five selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. He'll likely be a mid-to-low QB2 in fantasy circles this season.

Titans | Haven't committed to Zach Mettenberger

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 00:04:54 -0800

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger has the backing of the coaching staff, but they have not committed to him as the starter for 2015. General manager Ruston Webster said the team will fully consider QB Jameis Winston or QB Marcus Mariota.

Fantasy Tip: This sounds like a team that wants Mettenberger to stay as a backup. Mettenberger should be avoided as a starting option in most fantasy leagues unless he ends up with the starting job. If that is the case, Mettenberger projects as a QB2.

Jets | Marcus Mariota to meet with Jets

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 11:59:34 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets may consider selecting a quarterback if one of the top two quarterbacks falls to their spot. Mariota would compete with Geno Smith for the starting job if the Jets select him. Mariota would not be more than a No. 2 quarterback if he was the Jets starting quarterback.

Buccaneers | Lovie Smith likes Jameis Winston

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 09:18:36 -0800

Florida State QB Jameis Winston has a fan in Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith, and Smith said he wouldn't hesitate to draft him at No. 1 overall based on what he knows at the moment. Smith isn't worried about an allegation of sexual assault surrounding Winston. Smith also made it clear that the Bucs are considering Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with their first pick, too. Smith will meet with both quarterbacks for the first time this weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the team will also hold private workouts with both of them.

Fantasy Tip: Winston is believed to fit a pro-style offense better than Marcus Mariota, so the Bucs are expected to lean that way. Regardless, either quarterbacks will be a rookie in a new system, which makes them a midrange QB2 at best in 2015.

Titans | Marcus Mariota to meet with Tennessee

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 09:03:16 -0800

University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will meet with the Tennessee Titans at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.

Fantasy Tip: If the Titans do use the second pick overall on a quarterback, they will have to compete with Zach Mettenberger for the starting job in the fall. Either QB would be better suited as a weak QB2 in standard leagues, and could be a useful option in FantasyScore contests depending on the matchup and price.

NFL | Marcus Mariota to throw at combine

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 00:05:17 -0800

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has decided he will throw at the 2015 NFL Combine, but Mariota will throw on Sunday, Feb. 22, instead of Saturday, Feb. 21, when most other quarterbacks are throwing.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota will have a lot of people watching and is still expected to be one of the top two quarterbacks taken in the draft. He is projected to be no better than a No. 2 quarterback on rosters.

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota (shoulder) said the shoulder he injured in the national championship game is feeling better, but he is not sure if he will throw during the NFL Scouting Combine. Mariota said he will decide in the next day or two if he will throw.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to be one of the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but it is not known if he will receive a chance to start in 2015. His value will depend on which team selects him, but he likely will not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season.

Buccaneers | Jameis Winston could be top pick for TB

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 16:03:40 -0800

Florida State QB Jameis Winston could be selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, because he fits what the team wants to do on offense more than Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, in the opinion of NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock.

Fantasy Tip: Winston and Mariota appear to be two of the candidates to be the first overall pick in the draft, but it looks like Winston could have the lead at this point. If the Buccaneers draft a quarterback, he likely will have to compete with Mike Glennon for the starting job during training camp. Owners should consider the winner of the job a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season.

Buccaneers | Lovie Smith favors Jameis Winston

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith is thought to prefer Florida State QB Jameis Winston over Oregon QB Marcus Mariota for the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Winston would have a strong fan following thanks to his Florida fan base, but the off-field issues could pose problems with Winston like they have with Johnny Manziel. Still, the release of Josh McCown makes it likely Winston would be a solid backup if he didn't win the starting job.

NFL | To-be Browns coach mentors Marcus Mariota

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 17:03:31 -0800

NFL Draft prospect QB Marcus Mariota is currently working with impending Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell in advance of the NFL Draft Scouting Combine. The Browns will officially add O'Connell following his pre-combine commitments, and that has raised questions about whether the Browns are gaining an unfair advantage with O'Connell's hiring. "He has an obligation to train Mariota until I think about a week from now, and then hopefully he'll come to work for us," Browns owner Jimmy Haslam told Cleveland beat writers.

Fantasy Tip: In the event the Browns draft Mariota and O'Connell's hiring goes as planned, the rookie signal caller could find himself ahead of the curve. Quarterbacks often struggle to make a fantasy impact as rookies, but Mariota is an athletic quarterback who would become more intriguing as a QB3 if he's able to pick up the finer points as an NFL passer faster than the typical rookie.

Browns | Trading up for QB?

Wed, 04 Feb 2015 04:16:46 -0800

The Cleveland Browns are exploring the possibility of using their two draft picks in the first round to trade up for a quarterback along the lines of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota or Florida State QB Jameis Winston.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns may be hedging their bets that Johnny Manziel won't be ready for training camp, or they may simply want to bring in competition. Whatever the case, the situation bears watching as Manziel's stock could drop.

NFL | Marcus Mariota may not throw at Combine

Sun, 25 Jan 2015 05:05:27 -0800

University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota (shoulder) may opt out of throwing at the NFL Combine after spraining the acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder in the National Championship Game.

Fantasy Tip: Mariota is expected to be a first-round selection in the upcoming NFL Draft. He projects as a low-end QB2 in seasonal fantasy formats to start the season, but could move his way up ranks and be a solid weekly play in FantasyScore contests in favorable matchups.

NFL | Clubs fearful of gambling on QBs in draft

Thu, 22 Jan 2015 09:45:10 -0800

NFL teams and general managers are becoming increasingly fearful of gambling on big-name quarterback prospects early in drafts, and patience with rookie quarterbacks is thinner than ever before. Seventeen teams have had more than one general manager since 2011, and just 10 teams have the same GM as they did in 2008. "Everyone is fearful," said one NFC coach. "When they draft one, what if they make a mistake? It's not going to work out too well. The GM, the coach and the quarterback are tied together." Neither Oregon QB Marcus Mariota nor Florida State QB Jameis Winston have consistent praise from scouts to make them sure things.
