Rays | Kevin Kiermaier out 8-10 weeks

Mon, 23 May 2016 12:42:32 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier (hand) will have surgery Tuesday, May 24, and is likely to be out eight to 10 weeks.

Fantasy Tip: You can likely drop Kiermaier in any mixed formats if you owned him. Mikie Mahtook is starting in Kiermaier's place in center field Monday, and Brandon Guyer could remain an everyday player with an outfield spot open. Guyer, who has been producing with regular playing time, should be an option for outfield depth in deep mixed leagues. He's been hitting leadoff often, too, which maximizes his value. Mahtook is strictly a cheap flier in AL-only leagues.

Rays | Kevin Kiermaier placed on disabled list

Sun, 22 May 2016 07:19:53 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Rays have placed OF Kevin Kiermaier (hand) on the 15-day disabled list because of two fractures in his left hand. The injuries were sustained when Kiermaier attempted to make a diving catch in a game against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, May 21, and he could be sidelined for up to two months. In a corresponding move, OF Mikie Mahtook has been recalled from Class AAA Durham.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond Jennings appears poised to receive the bulk of the action in center field while Kiermaier is out. He should be rostered in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues, although he has gotten off to a slow start at the plate this season, batting just .186 through 102 at-bats. Kiermaier is worth stashing in most fantasy formats.

Rays | Kevin Kiermaier out with broken hand

Sat, 21 May 2016 16:10:41 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier (hand) left the game Saturday, May 21, with two fractures in his left hand after attempting a diving catch.

Fantasy Tip: The injury could open the door for Desmond Jennings, who hit two homers earlier in the week. Jennings never put it all together, but he could provide a power-speed combo on waivers. He should be picked up at least in AL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues. There's no estimate on how long Kiermaier will be out, but it's likely to be at least a month. He's worth holding in AL-only formats and the deepest mixed leagues.

Rays | Three Rays regulars not playing

Wed, 04 May 2016 14:44:00 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier, 1B Logan Morrison and SS Brad Miller are all out of the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed SP Alex Wood Wednesday, May 4. OF Brandon Guyer is in two-hole and starting in center field, 1B Steve Pearce is at first base and is hitting cleanup and SS Tim Beckham is at shortstop and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Miller (.176, two home runs) has basically entered a platoon with Beckham at shortstop, which hurts his value in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Pearce, Guyer and Beckham are all dice rolls as low-end daily options, although Guyer and Pearce are a bit more attractive based on where they reside in the order tonight.

Rays | Kevin Kiermaier cooled off by O's

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 19:01:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier was hitless in two at-bats with a walk and a strikeout Monday, April 25, against the Baltimore Orioles to snap his modest six-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the hitless game, Kiermaier has emerged as a must-start in all AL-only fantasy formats, some deeper mixed play and in DFS as a mid-tier OF value.

Rays | Three Rays regulars out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:56:12 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier, 1B Logan Morrison and SS Brad Miller are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. OF Brandon Guyer is in center field and hitting second, 1B Steve Pearce is starting at first and hitting sixth, and SS Tim Beckham is at the 6 and batting eighth against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathis doesn't instill fear in the opposition these days with decreased velocity and dominance. Guyer doesn't have much power but can be a rat on the basepaths as a deep daily sleeper. Pearce is another deep sleeper worth taking a look at, but he had only a .196 average and four home runs against lefties in 2015. Beckham is a desperation gamble.

Rays | Kevin Kiermaier breaks slump

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 13:43:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier snapped an 0-for-19 slump with a base hit Sunday, April 17, against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Kiermaier, a .263-10-40 hitter last year, was off to a .154 start prior to his injury. It's too soon to push the panic button, but for now just limit Kiermaier's playing time until he breaks out of his slump. It should happen.

Rays | Logan Forsythe, Kevin Kiermaier return

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 07:37:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays 2B Logan Forsythe (leg, hip) and OF Kevin Kiermaier (head) are back in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Jose Quintana Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: Forsythe and Kiermaier are starting for the first time since colliding with each other while chasing a fly ball Friday, April 15. Daily fantasy players may want to give them a game or two to get back into the swing of things before relying on them again.

Rays | Injured TB players could return Sunday

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 12:35:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash is hopeful that 2B Logan Forsythe (leg, hip) and OF Kevin Kiermaier (head) will be able to return to the lineup against the Chicago White Sox Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: Both players were forced to leave Friday's game after colliding with each other while chasing a fly ball hit by OF Avisail Garcia during the fourth inning. Daily fantasy players should give them a game or two to demonstrate that they're completely healthy before relying on them again.

Rays | Pair of Tampa Bay hitters sitting

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 12:01:42 -0700

Tampa Bay OF Kevin Kiermaier (head) and 2B Logan Forsythe (leg, hip) are not in the lineup against Chicago White Sox SP John Danks on Saturday, April 16. The pair was involved in an outfield collision on Friday, April 15, and will be replaced by OF Brandon Guyer and SS Tim Beckham, respectively. Guyer will bat leadoff, while Beckham will hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: There is still no official timetable on Kiermaier or Forsythe, although it sounds as if the latter has a decent shot at playing Sunday. Guyer is a reasonable low-cost option in DFS for this game as he has enjoyed a relative amount of success against southpaws in his career. Beckham could be ignored in virtually all formats.
