Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka tweaking mechanics

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:20:59 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) tweaked his pitching mechanics, something he thinks contributed to his elbow injury in 2014. "I don't think they were solid," Tanaka said. "With the right mechanics, the right form, the right balance, you're able to throw a solid pitch. It's not about how much power you can put on the throw. It's more about the mechanics. That's what I believe." Most of the mechanical adjustments for Tanaka involve making sure his arm is in sync with the rest of his delivery.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka, at 26 years old, remains young enough to possibly hold off on Tommy John surgery if he makes a conscious effort to take it easy this spring while at the same time tweaking his mechanics. Still, the threat of a TJS procedure sometime in the regular season remains very real, making Tanaka a bust candidate.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka faces hitters

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 13:50:12 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) faced hitters for the first time this spring Monday, March 2, and he thinks it went well. Tanaka went 13-5 with a 2.77 ERA in 20 starts last year for the Yanks. "My body's perfectly fine. I understand everybody's worried about the elbow and I understand too that I have to be cautious about it, as well, but so far it's been good," Tanaka said. He'll next throw another bullpen or simulated game.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka could be very tough to trust on your fantasy baseball roster in 2015 as he tries to avoid Tommy John elbow reconstruction. So far Tanaka's results have been good, but it's still early. If you choose to roster him this year, make sure you have plenty of rotation insurance in case he has a setback and needs surgery during the year.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka on normal schedule?

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 14:08:29 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), who feels he's completely healed from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, is expected to be on a spring schedule normal to last year's. He will throw another bullpen session Sunday, Feb. 22. "I feel it's healed," Tanaka said. "I'm confident that I can get through this season."

Fantasy Tip: It's still early, but this is good progress to see from Tanaka. However, you'll need to remain extremely cautious in the late middle rounds of drafts this year with a Tanaka selection. Most pitchers that delay surgery on a UCL injury eventually need TJS, so Tanaka could just delaying the inevitable. Keep tabs on his spring work and make sure you're protected if you take a chance on him.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka feels great

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 11:14:33 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) said his right elbow is feeling better than ever. He's dealing with a slightly torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, but he has avoided surgery. "I actually feel a little bit better than last year," Tanaka said. "My overall body and health is better." The team may start out with a six-man rotation to protect Tanaka and others. Tanaka said he's already thrown some cutters and has no plans to cut down on the pitch this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka is feeling good now, but it almost seems that he's a ticking time bomb with his elbow. Even in the later rounds of your mixed league drafts, Tanaka is an incredible risk unless you have plenty of pitching insurance around him.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka throws 21 pitches

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 13:09:35 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw 21 pitches during his first bullpen session of the year at the team's minor league complex Thursday, Feb. 19. Tanaka missed two and a half months last season while rehabilitating a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka flashed high-end results through his first 16 starts last season before he was shut down. With the threat of Tommy John surgery still looming, his fantasy stock is truly up in the air. Expect his name to be thrown out in the later middle rounds on draft day, where there is huge profit potential, if he returns to pitch at the level he did to start the 2014 season. Still, there is plenty of risk.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to throw Thursday

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:57:12 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) took the day off Wednesday, Feb. 18, after throwing long toss Tuesday, Feb. 17. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka will throw a side session off the mound Thursday, Feb. 19, and he hasn't had any setbacks since suffering a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament last July.

Fantasy Tip: The Yankees must be very careful not to overwork Tanaka this spring. How often do we see pitchers forego Tommy John surgery only to later on succumb to the ligament replacement surgery? Tanaka becomes a huge risk and bust candidate because of the nature of his injury. If you're drafting him in the later rounds, you better make sure you have pitching insurance.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka throws long toss

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 15:57:54 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) participated in a long-toss session Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka has gone through a normal offseason program. He's an injury risk who should be drafted as an SP2 because of questions about the health of his elbow, but he has elite SP1 upside.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka likely limited in camp

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 07:38:36 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is expected to report to camp Tuesday, Feb. 17. He's likely to have similar restrictions during spring training as he did last year, according to pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka is perhaps the biggest boom-or-bust candidate in fantasy baseball this season. He'll attempt to pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, which is entirely possible. However, it's an issue that will be heavily monitored this season. He'll have to prove his health during camp, and he will likely be a SP2 target.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka had normal offseason

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said SP Masahiro Tanaka had a normal offseason throwing and rest routine despite tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow last July. "He finished the season as a healthy player," he said. "He wasn't prescribed any different regimen because of what happened last year. ... There was no more rehab necessary."
