Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports the signing of WR Keyshawn Johnson by the Carolina Panthers leaves WR Ricky Proehl's future with the team uncertain. The Panthers have five wide receivers, not counting Proehl, and that is all they normally carry on their roster. It's possible the Panthers could re-sign Proehl, bring him to training camp and let him compete with WRs Drew Carter and Karl Hankton for the final spots, but this is a unique situation. If Proehl were to come back, it would be common decency to assure him a roster spot and promise he wouldn't be cut in training camp, but hat's a guarantee the Panthers might not be able to make.

Steve Reed, of the Gaston Gazette, reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox stated that WR Karl Hankton is a valuable piece to the club's special teams units and will not be deactivated to suit up WR Rod Gardner. "As long as Karl is healthy, he's going to be on the field," Fox said. "He just happens to play wide out, but he's a core special teams player. He's on kickoff coverage. He's on kickoff return. He's on punt team. He's on punt return." Hankton's teammates also recognize his value. "There's a reason he's our captain," said safety Mike Minter. "You have to have guys like him. He makes plays for us all over the field."

Carolina Panthers WR Rod Gardner said he expects to play in the Sunday, Sept. 18, game against the New England Patriots. Mon, 12 Sep 2005 11:52:53 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Rod Gardner was inactive for the Week 1 game against the New Orleans Saints. Panthers head coach John Fox said the roster numbers forced the team to activate four receivers, and the decision came down to Gardner and WR Ricky Proehl, who was activated. With WR Karl Hankton needed for special teams, the team was short-handed when WR Steve Smith was injured late in the game, which forced Hankton to play at receiver. That could possibly force the Panthers to look at activating Gardner for Week 2.

Panthers.com reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox was asked Tuesday, August 2, about replacing WR Muhsin Muhammad and Fox replied: "The loss of Muhsin Muhammad was a big loss. He had a big year for us a year ago. We've got to replace him. But the good news is we have Steve Smith back, who I think is an impact player in this league. We've got some guys who we brought in. Keary Colbert had a good rookie season a year ago. He should be a year better and more familiar with our system. Rod Gardner. Karl Hankton. Drew Carter, who watched and learned all last year but wasn't able to play. I think there is a good corps of guys there to choose from."

Brett Borden, of Panthers.com, reports Carolina Panthers WR Karl Hankton takes pride in playing special teams and the team will look to him to provide veteran leadership now that longtime special teams coach Scott O'Brien retired after last season. New special teams coach Danny Crossman is excited about what Hankton brings to the unit. "He knows the techniques and exactly how we want to teach them, as far as some of the footwork and different schemes we might use," Crossman said. "A veteran can see those things on the field and come to you and say 'Here's how they're lining up so here's what we might expect.' It will be a huge help, especially for the young guys."

The Carolina Panthers are high on WRs Eugene Baker and Walter Young, but both were inactive last week. Look for that trend to continue because the team needs their spots on the active roster to keep room for some key special teams players. That means Panthers WR Karl Hankton is the fourth receiver, although he's a liability on offense. Hankton is only capable of filling in on a short-term basis. If starteing WRs Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad and top backup WR Ricky Proehl get injured later in the season, the team will activate Baker or Young because they're better receivers than Hankton.
