Phillies | Maikel Franco goes deep

Sun, 17 May 2015 20:23:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco hit his first major league home run in a 6-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: After going hitless in his season debut, Franco has gone 3-for-8 with two RBIs and three runs scored in his last two games. He is worth picking up in deeper leagues, but don't expect any type of consistency from the 22-year-old.

Phillies | Maikel Franco batting fifth

Fri, 15 May 2015 11:59:21 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is batting fifth in the starting lineup in his 2015 debut Friday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Franco was off to a very good start in the minor leagues and likely will see most of the starts at third base since he has been called up. Owners on FantasyScore may want to see him in a few games before considering him for their lineups.

Phillies | Maikel Franco to start at 3B

Fri, 15 May 2015 11:19:57 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco, who was recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Friday, May 15, will be the team's starting second baseman after the Phillies sent 3B Cody Asche down to the minors earlier this week in order to convert to a left fielder. "This was a baseball decision based on Maikel's development and performance," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement. "We believe he is ready for the next step." Franco was hitting .355 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 33 games for Lehigh Valley before being called up. The Phillies retain his rights until 2022 before he can become a free agent by waiting until Friday to promote him.

Fantasy Tip: Franco will initially be a relatively cheap third base commodity at FantasyScore, and it's tempting to immediately throw him in there against Arizona Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson in his season debut Friday night as a value play.

Phillies | Maikel Franco recalled

Fri, 15 May 2015 06:51:43 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Friday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Franco was hitting .355-4-24 at Lehigh Valley and is worth picking up in deeper leagues. He should see a good share of playing time and could become a midrange option on FantasyScore.

Phillies | Maikel Franco up by weekend?

Mon, 11 May 2015 22:10:42 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to promote 3B Maikel Franco from Class AAA Lehigh Valley (Pa.) this weekend to play third base.

Fantasy Tip: Franco did not hit particularly well in his exposure to the big leagues last season, but he has plenty of power and could be a solid add for FantasyScore owners, particularly if he gets off to a hot start in his first few games.

Phillies | Maikel Franco close to promotion

Mon, 11 May 2015 16:43:13 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco, who is playing at Class AAA right now, is very close to a promotion to the big leagues, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Amaro sees Franco sticking at third base for the most part.

Fantasy Tip: Franco hit only .179 (10-for-56) with five RBI and 13 strikeouts in his first taste of the big leagues late in the 2014 season. At Lehigh Valley this year, he's hitting .336 (42-for-125) with three home runs and 17 RBI. The 22-year-old right-handed swinger has raw power at the hot corner, and he'll be a welcome power source for an anemic offense. It's time to stash him in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, and he'll be a hot commodity in shallow mixed leagues, too, when he comes up. Cody Asche ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) could lose considerable playing time if Franco is brought up.

Phillies | Cody Asche destined for left field?

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:30:03 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Cody Asche shagged fly balls in left field during batting practice Tuesday, April 28. With prospect 3B Maikel Franco expected to join the Phillies this season, Asche might relocate to left field. "At some point we need to make sure that Cody is prepared," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Wednesday, April 29. "It's no secret that Maikel is doing very well down there. We want to try to create as much versatility with our guys as we possibly can."

Fantasy Tip: While Asche ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has a respectable .303 batting average for the season, his four runs, two home runs and three RBI leave a lot to be desired in the counting stats. He cannot be started in the majority of seasonal leagues, and he makes for a risky FantasyScore play with such little upside. Until the Phillies start to score more runs, Asche's fantasy impact will be limited, despite his solid average.

Phillies | Maikel Franco raking at Class AAA

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:20:28 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is hitting .333 (28-for-84) with 10 doubles, one triple, one home run, 11 RBIs and an .883 OPS through 19 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Fantasy Tip: Franco will land in Philadelphia this season, and if it is after May 15, he won't be eligible for free agency until 2021. Super 2 salary arbitration status could be another factor, which could keep Franco with Lehigh Valley until the first week of July. In deep leagues, it may be time to stash the masher now, however there are no guarantees he hits the ground running at the major league level.

Phillies | Maikel Franco sent down

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 05:45:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco was optioned to minor league camp Friday, March 20.

Fantasy Tip: Franco is a player to keep on your watch list, and he could be up in the first couple of months. Cody Asche ($3,300; 6.6% of your cap) will post up at third base and is a low-end option on FantasyScore.

Phillies | Maikel Franco struggling in the spring

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 16:54:00 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco entered Thursday, March 19, with just six singles in 29 at-bats (.207 average). Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg stated Franco needs to make some adjustments and looks like he's "over-swinging."

Fantasy Tip: Franco appears ticketed for a return trip to Triple-A. He makes contact at a high rate for a power-hitting prospect, so a fast start could result in an early-season promotion. Franco is a late-round sleeper in deep mixed leagues and a stash candidate in NL-only formats.
