Phillies | Maikel Franco update

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 08:57:34 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco went 0-for-2 with two fly-outs at the 2014 All-Star Futures Game Sunday, July 13. However, he may be coming up to the majors soon. Franco is hitting .390 in 41 at-bats in July with nine extra-base hits in nine contests. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters last week that Franco may be an option if his bat heats up, and that he's looking to make changes to the Phillies' lineup. He noted that Franco also could play first base.

Fantasy Tip: He could challenge Cody Asche for work at third base and even Ryan Howard for PAs at first. Franco is worth tucking away if you need CI help in deep mixed games.

Phillies | Maikel Franco not ready

Tue, 27 May 2014 16:33:34 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. indicated that he doesn't feel 3B Maikel Franco is ready to come up to the majors, even with 3B Cody Asche (hamstring) on the disabled list. "He's just not playing good enough baseball yet," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's not really ready to be a big leaguer yet." Franco is hitting .231 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and a .669 OPS with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. INF Cesar Hernandez continues to play third base with Asche out.

Fantasy Tip: The Phils don't want to rush one of their top prospects. Can you blame them? Francisco could easily be up later this summer or as a September call-up, but don't feel the urgency just yet to add him and stash him on your roster.

Phillies | Maikel Franco may be on fast track

Mon, 26 May 2014 00:11:29 -0700

With injuries hampering the Philadelphia Phillies at third base, sources indicate top 3B prospect Maikel Franco could be promoted to the parent club sometime this year instead of in 2015. "We'll see whether it's the right thing for us and the right thing for him," said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "We'll kick it around." Franco is hitting .301 in May.

Phillies | Cody Asche placed on disabled list

Sun, 25 May 2014 10:14:07 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed 3B Cody Asche (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring. In a corresponding move, RP Justin De Fratus has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The move is retroactive to Friday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: INF Cesar Hernandez will start at third base for the time being, but shouldn't be considered outside of deep NL-only leagues. There is a possibility that 3B Maikel Franco (illness) could be promoted from the minors if Asche is sidelined for an extended period of time but he is currently battling an upper respiratory illness.

Phillies | Maikel Franco impressing

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 16:32:45 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco has impressed manager Ryne Sandberg this spring. 3B Cody Asche is expected to start the year as the starting third baseman, though, with Franco starting out at Class AA or AAA. "He's looked real good at third base," Sandberg said. "He's got a soft glove. He reacts to balls well. The tougher the play, the softer he gets, which for a 21-year-old guy is pretty amazing. And his arm is very good. He made a play the other day behind the bag on the chalk and got it over to first base effortlessly and still had plenty of arm left."

Phillies | Ryan Howard wants to improve against lefties

Tue, 25 Feb 2014 12:10:02 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard asked manager Ryne Sandberg to face more left-handed pitchers this spring in an effort to improve against them. Howard had a single and home run in his first two intrasquad at-bats against southpaws. Howard played well against lefties last spring, but he had just three doubles and three homers with a .173 batting average in 87 at-bats against lefties last season. Sandberg doesn't see a platoon situation for Howard at first base as an imminent option.

Fantasy Tip: Perhaps Maikel Franco become the other half of a platoon at first base later in the year if Howard doesn't improve against lefties. It's an option, but Sandberg looks like he'll be patient with Howard to start the year.

Phillies | Maikel Franco seeing time at 1B

Fri, 21 Feb 2014 20:06:43 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is getting some work at first base during workouts. Manager Ryne Sandberg said he wants to see Franco at first base and third base.

Fantasy Tip: Franco isn't expected to break camp on the active roster, but he could force his way up with his bat if Cody Asche isn't working out at third base or if Ryan Howard is injured. He's worthy of an NL-only pick in the late rounds, and he'll be relevant in deep mixed leagues if he comes up and sees consistent playing time.
