Philadelphia Phillies SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez allowed one run with two hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts while retiring five batters in his Grapefruit League spring debut against the New York Yankees Saturday, March 1. The Philadelphia Phillies continue to evaluate SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez this spring, and manager Ryne Sandberg hasn't exactly heaped praise on him yet. "He's still a little bit of a mystery to me. I know the facts about him. Those are the things that stand out. I want to see progression and how he is from one time to the next and see how that looks," Sandberg said. Gonzalez's stuff doesn't jump out, and his control has been spotty so far. His performance in spring games will likely determine if he makes the roster.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is still an enigma because no one knows what he will bring to the team, but manager Ryne Sandberg was excited as he watched Gonzalez throw when spring workouts began. "He shows deception with his delivery, so that's something," Sandberg said. "I'll be anxious to see how he continues to look as he continues to build arm strength."
Fantasy Tip: It's still way too early to judge. The Phillies won't have Cole Hamels for Opening Day due to injury, but the team signed A.J. Burnett as a backup. Gonzalez may project as a fifth starter, but his contract value drastically dropped due to injury issues. Watch this spring.

The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with free-agent SP A.J. Burnett (Pirates) Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Fantasy Tip: Burnett is expected to be guaranteed a rotation spot, which will likely push Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez out of the picture. However, depending on Cole Hamels' (shoulder) status for the start of the regular season, Gonzalez could still begin the year in the starting five.

The Philadelphia Phillies have plenty of competition for the final three rotation sports behind SPs Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. SP Kyle Kendrick is expected to hold one of the rotation spots, with newcomers SPs Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and Roberto Hernandez competing with SP Jonathan Pettibone for jobs in spring training.

The Phillies front office would prefer SP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, their inexperienced, $12 million Cuban import, to seize a spot in the pitching rotation. Gonzalez threw a bullpen session last week for new pitching coach Bob McClure in Clearwater, Fla. Amaro said there will be no restrictions on the righty in spring training; he will throw a normal Grapefruit League schedule.
