Sun, 20 Oct 2013 17:30:38 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith had five receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown in the Week 7 game against the St. Louis Rams. During the game, he hauled in his 800th career reception, becoming the 29th player in NFL history to accomplish the feat. "It means a great deal to me," Smith said Sunday, Oct. 20. "It's great and it's a big win for us, and that's all that matters. It would mean a lot less if I got my 800th reception and we lost."
Fri, 11 Oct 2013 19:58:56 -0700
Carolina Panthers WRs Brandon LaFell and Steve Smith had drops that would have been big plays or touchdowns in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Fantasy Tip: The drops have hurt the effectiveness of QB Cam Newton, who is often blamed for the struggles of the team, but he cannot catch the balls he throws. In addition, Newton's pass protection has been abysmal. Until things improve in Charlotte, Newton is best used as a QB2 in most fantasy leagues.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (hip) is not at practice Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Sun, 22 Sep 2013 18:08:27 -0700
Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (hip) left the Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears briefly due to a hip injury. He came down hard on his hip on a catch attempt, but was able to return. He finished with 40 yards on three receptions, and he was targeted seven times.
Fantasy Tip: Smith and the Panthers have a bye in Week 4, so you'll need to make alternate plans for your WR2 or flex spot.
Fri, 20 Sep 2013 12:53:38 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith thinks QB Cam Newton is pressing in the early season. "What the current issue is, you have a young player pressing," Smith said. "And what do I mean by pressing? You know when a young player, a receiver, if he doesn't get a lot of passes, all of sudden instead of going down he fights for that extra yard, fumble. That's what you're seeing with Cam a little bit, I feel like, in the past game is, well, (imitates stammering) and now you got that pressing." Newton went 21-for-38 for 229 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He overthrew his receivers often, however.
Fantasy Tip: Newton has been wildly inconsistent with his downfield throws, which has left his fantasy owners yearning for more. He can make things happen with his legs, but until he proves he can beat defenses deep consistently, he may be a headache in fantasy circles.
Mon, 09 Sep 2013 16:28:48 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera admitted that his team's offense was too conservative in their Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. QB Cam Newton only had three pass attempts of more than 10 yards in the game. "There are some things that need to be looked at on both sides in terms of getting the ball vertical," Rivera said as he looked ahead to Week 2 at the Buffalo Bills. "We looked through it. We talked about it and those will be the things that we look to do. We have to create more of those opportunities." The Panthers rushed for 134 yards on 26 carries against Seattle.
Fantasy Tip: To be fair, the Panthers were facing one of the better pass defenses in the league in the Seahawks. However, expect Newton and the offense to attempt to stretch the field more often, beginning in Week 2. This should benefit Steve Smith, Greg Olsen and the other receiving options.
Thu, 05 Sep 2013 10:46:54 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith blamed former offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski for the team's struggles last year on offense. "The prior offensive coordinator [Chudzinski] really was positioning himself to just apply for that head coaching job," Smith said. "I think our offense suffered a little bit because of that."
"At times, we got cute," Smith said. "We did things that weren't necessarily us, like the underutilizing of [running back] Mike Tolbert. But we're out of that. The past is the past."
Wed, 31 Jul 2013 09:11:01 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis has struggled with injuries in his career, and he appears to be slower than previous seasons so far during training camp. He is behind starting WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell on the depth chart, and newcomers WRs Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon appear to be ahead of him as well.
Fantasy Tip: Gettis might be battling Armanti Edwards for the No. 5 receiver job, and Edwards is versatile because of his special teams work. The fan favorite Gettis might be soon looking for work unless he shines significantly in the coming days. Avoid him for fantasy purposes right now.
Tue, 30 Jul 2013 18:24:31 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Armanti Edwards worked with the first-team offense during practice Tuesday, July 30, with WR Steve Smith resting. Edwards, a converted college quarterback, has been slow to develop into a receiver. However, the team isn't giving up on him just yet.
Fantasy Tip: Edwards is battling Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon for the third receiver job, although it is likely he has to settle for the fourth or fifth receiver spot on the depth chart if he makes the team. For fantasy purposes, he can mostly be avoided unless he someone ends up winning the No. 3 job. Even then, he would only be worth a look in deeper formats.
Tue, 30 Jul 2013 18:23:40 -0700
Carolina Panthers DT Dwan Edwards, C Ryan Kalil and WR Steve Smith were missing from practice Tuesday, July 30, but they were simply being given a day to rest and it was not due to any type of injury.
Sat, 27 Jul 2013 23:38:25 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, WR Steve Smith and TE Greg Olsen have all come out in support of testing for human growth hormone, something currently not done in the NFL. "Whatever the NFL decides to do I'm all for it, whether HGH testing or any testing," Newton said. "I'll be prepared to do the test." Olsen also called it good for the game, and Smith said he is all for weeding out the cheaters.
Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:25:01 -0700
Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.
Fantasy Tip: It's hard to trust Ginn finally developing into a full-fledged catcher, but there's big-play potential here in what could be a surprisingly productive passing system. Greg Olsen's presence limits the availability of secondary targets, but waiver-wire scroungers in deep leagues will watch this play out during the season.
Fri, 31 May 2013 07:18:46 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he wants to become a team captain at some point but understands that his teammates will have to vote him as one. "Team captain is solely based off of your peers," Newton said. "I'm going about it each and every day, trying to do my part to prove not only to my team, but first myself, that's a big responsibility on the field and off the field." WR Steve Smith and OT Jordan Gross are currently the team's offensive captains.
Thu, 30 May 2013 15:51:45 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he wants to play 15 or 16 seasons. The 33-year-old and 13-year veteran wants to emulate former Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Ronde Barber, who just retired. "Physically, I feel great right now," Smith said. He battled knee injuries for much of last year but reportedly has looked limber and has his motor back.
Fantasy Tip: Whether or not this is offseason noise, Smith is set up for a potentially profitable season if he could be had as a WR3. The Panthers will continue their late-season offensive adjustments that led to a much-improved Cam Newton, so there should be a bigger comfort in the passing game.
Thu, 30 May 2013 14:08:37 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he wants to play 15 or 16 years in his career, which would take him through the 2015 season or the 2016 season. Smith said he feels great physically, and head coach Ron Rivera said he believes Smith is still at the top of his game.
Fantasy Tip: Smith has played well the last two seasons and does not appear to be slowing down at this point. Smith should be considered a weak No. 2 fantasy wide receiver but probably will be a weekly option for the flex position.
Thu, 16 May 2013 14:55:19 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith verbally blasted New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez Thursday, May 16. "He sucks," Smith reportedly said. "I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich."
Sun, 24 Mar 2013 21:21:33 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera plans to give WR Steve Smith more rest during the regular season in order to keep him healthy. "I think we have to be smart with Steve, make sure we put him in position to take advantage of his abilities and maximize his time and not waste his time or reps. So he's getting quality reps and quality plays," Rivera said.
Fantasy Tip: Smith has said he wants to play several more years, and he is healthy this offseason. The Panthers want to keep it that way. He will once again be a solid WR2/3 or flex fantasy play in 2013, and his fantasy owners will appreciate the extra rest and health preservation.
Thu, 31 Jan 2013 10:24:31 -0800
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he is happy that the team named Mike Shula the new offensive coordinator because it will allow the offense to continue to move forward. "You always want to hire a guy that doesn't set you back or changes up. And how a guy sets you back is all of a sudden you have to change up everything," Smith said. "I think that is a vital role. That's important to keep in perspective, and I think that's what we did."

Sun, 09 Dec 2012 18:37:07 -0800
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith had seven receptions for 109 yards in the Week 14 win against the Atlanta Falcons.
Fantasy Tip: Smith has gone over 100 yards receiving in back-to-back games for the first time since Week 1-2. He is getting hot for his fantasy owners at just the right time. In Week 15, Smith and the Panthers face a favorable matchup against the Chargers, a team which ranks in the bottom half of the NFL in pass defense.

Sun, 11 Nov 2012 18:05:31 -0800
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith managed just one catch for 19 yards in Week 10 against the Denver Broncos. "We've got to get him the football," QB Cam Newton implored after the game.
Fantasy Tip: The receiving yardage total was by far a season low, and he had at least three catches in each game until Week 10. Despite the terrible stat line, he remains a decent low-end WR2 or solid WR3 heading into Week 11 against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass defense which has been awful.
Sun, 04 Nov 2012 17:59:27 -0800
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith had three receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown in Week 9 against the Washington Redskins.
Fantasy Tip: The touchdown was Smith's first of the season. Despite the lack of scores, Smith has averaged 16.6 yards per reception, and he is on pace to go over 1,000 yards for the seventh time in his career. He remains a decent low-end WR2 or 'flex' play heading into Week 10.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith had seven receptions for a season-high 118 yards in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears, but he is still without a touchdown on the season through seven games.
Fantasy Tip: Smith has three 100-yard games, and he has 83 or more receiving yards in five of his seven games this season. However, the lack of scores makes him more of a low-end WR2 or 'flex' play in most leagues heading into Week 9 against the Washington Redskins.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith managed a game-high seven receptions and a team-best 83 yards in Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Sun, 07 Oct 2012 18:07:13 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Brandon LaFell was the best of the lot for the team's wide receivers in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks, and that's not saying much. He had three grabs for a team-high 44 yards. WR Steve Smith was held to 40 yards on just four receptions, and WR Louis Murphy was stopped just short of the goal line on his only catch of the day, a 5-yard reception. That was it for the wide receivers in the 16-12 loss.
