Browns | Josh McCown the favorite to start for Browns

Tue, 05 May 2015 09:18:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is the favorite to start training camp as the team's starting quarterback, with head coach Mike Pettine saying "it's fair to say." QB Johnny Manziel struggled last year as a rookie and was in rehab for 10 weeks. McCown is the most experienced quarterback the team has on roster.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will still face competition from Manziel and the other quarterbacks on roster later this summer, but McCown will have the leg up. With a mediocre receiving corps and largely unproven backfield, McCown, if he winds up winning the job, is a lackluster QB2 option for fantasy owners.

Browns | Johnny Manziel in second spot

Mon, 04 May 2015 20:12:39 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected to open training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, as head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, May 4, "I think it's fair to say" that QB Josh McCown will open camp atop the depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has plenty of time to get things in order and make a run for the starting job. Whoever comes away as the winner of the starting job is still nothing more than a QB2 in standard fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Browns | QB still an issue in Cleveland?

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:42:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine doesn't seem overly concerned with the Browns' current state at quarterback. Pettine said the quarterback position isn't the only position that wins football games. QBs Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, Thaddeus Lewis and Connor Shaw are currently on Cleveland's roster.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine could very well start McCown or one of the other current quarterbacks for Week 1. The Browns seem to catching some flak for not drafting a quarterback, but Pettine doesn't seem phased by it. Whoever starts will be a fantasy backup.

Browns | Johnny Manziel committed in camp

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 17:35:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's commitment is "night and day" from last year, according to Browns OT Joe Thomas, Tuesday, April 28. Manziel has been participating in the Browns' voluntary offseason workout program since it began April 20. "This year on a Saturday if you came in the building, you'd see him studying his playbook and watching film with his coach. It's pretty apparent he's realized how important football is to him, and he's realized that in the NFL you can't get away with maybe some of the things that you did in college because it's a big boys' game now," said Thomas.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will also have to regain the trust of fantasy owners. With Josh McCown as competition for the Browns' starting job, Manziel currently holds zero fantasy value. Even if Manziel wins the starter's job, he'll only be a late-round option in two-quarterback leagues.

He has publicly apologized for his off-field issues and said he's working to become the best possible player, teammate and man he can be.

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 10:42:09 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel reported for the first day of voluntary workouts Monday, April 20.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel likely will be given the chance to compete for the starting quarterback job during workouts and training camp. Owners should consider Manziel a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season if he is the starter.

Sat, 11 Apr 2015 09:21:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has been released from his rehab facility.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel should compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp. He likely would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he is able to win the job.

Browns | Unsure about Johnny Manziel?

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 13:47:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still a big question mark for the Browns' organization, according to Denver Broncos FS T.J. Ward. Ward said he thinks 90% of the team has moved on and doesn't really know who they'll get when Manziel returns from rehabilitation. Ward added that when the Browns were reconstructing their offense, Manziel's name hardly came up.

Browns | Johnny Manziel has to earn trust

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 09:55:32 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will need to earn back the trust of his teammates and prove that he's dedicating to winning after a voluntary rehab treatment, according to Browns OT Joe Thomas. "I think he's going to have to prove to the team that football is important and being the man, being the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, is important, it is his goal, his single goal in his life," Thomas said.

Fantasy Tip: There's no telling how Manziel will respond to rehab for alcohol and other issues in 2015. He's an extremely risky fantasy selection, and he's not even guaranteed the starting job, as he'll have to win it from from Josh McCown in training camp.

Browns | Johnny Manziel leaving rehab next week?

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 18:25:27 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel played golf with his father Saturday, April 4, and is likely to be discharged from his rehab facility soon, possibly even next week.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will be competing with Josh McCown for the starting job in 2015, but even if Manziel wins the gig, he is only worth a flier late in drafts in two-quarterback leagues.

Browns | CLE moving on from Johnny Manziel?

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 09:02:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel may be out of time with the Browns, as ESPN insider Chris Mortensen indicated the team is ready to move on. "I think about 90% that they have moved on (from Manziel) in their own minds except that they really don't know who they're going to get when Johnny leaves rehab, which has been an extended stay," Mortensen said on ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" Friday, April 3. "He should be getting out sometime in the first week of April if they're satisfied that he's ready to go out and get into society and that whatever deep-rooted problems that he had has been addressed. The bottom line is that Johnny Manziel's future with the Browns has been in question. When they were putting together half of a new offensive staff, Manziel's name barely even came up in conversation."

Fantasy Tip: The team brought Josh McCown in to compete with Manziel, and there is still a shot "Johnny Football" could win the job. Both of them are low-end QB2 options.

Browns | Won't be on Hard Knocks

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 10:31:00 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said the team will not volunteer to be featured on the show "Hard Knocks" partly because QB Johnny Manziel doesn't need the increased scrutiny and attention. Manziel is currently in rehab, and the team expects him to be present for the start of offseason workouts April 20.

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 05:46:15 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected back with the team for offseason workouts April 20 after completing more than two months of treatment.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will have to beat out Josh McCown for the starting job in camp, and he's a low-end QB2 flyer in traditional drafts.

Browns | Cleveland not banking on Johnny Manziel

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 11:23:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel won't be counted on for the 2015 season, especially after the Browns offered a late first-round pick to try to acquire Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Cleveland could also select a quarterback in the first couple of rounds in this year's draft.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is still in rehab for personal issues, and the Browns recently signed Josh McCown to compete for the starting job in training camp. Cleveland would be wise not to count on Manziel being in the picture at this point. Heading into fall fantasy drafts, Manziel shouldn't be high on your radar as anything more than a very weak QB2.

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 19:31:25 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still in inpatient rehab, but he is likely at the point where he can leave the facility for brief stints. Earlier reports said that he had left the facility.

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 18:19:47 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel left rehab Friday, March 13, after spending just over six weeks in the facility, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel should have a chance to win the starting job in Cleveland, and if he does open 2015 as the starter, his scrambling ability gives him the potential to be a mid-level No. 2 quarterback for fantasy owners.

Browns | Johnny Manziel still in rehab

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:29:46 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still in rehab at this point, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Manziel will be ready to participate in offseason workouts, but he should be ready for training camp. Manziel likely will be given the chance to compete for the starting job during camp but would be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job.

Browns | Johnny Manziel needs to focus on football

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 14:29:45 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel needs to have an obsession with football, according to offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. "It's truly a lifestyle to be an NFL quarterback," DeFilippo said. "It's not just a job. It's all-consuming. You need to sleep, eat, do everything fast and just think about football all the time."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has sparked plenty of controversy after just one season of professional football. While Manziel still isn't guaranteed to start next season, especially with QB Josh McCown recently signed, there are still some positive signs with the rehabilitation program he's going through and a new offensive coordinator in DeFilippo.

Browns | Josh McCown expects to start

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:44:47 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is expecting to start after signing a three-year, $14 million deal last week that includes $6.25 million in guarantees and $6 million in incentives. McCown went just 1-10 as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. McCown will compete with QBs Johnny Manziel and Connor Shaw this summer.

Fantasy Tip: As of right now, McCown looks like the most likely candidate to start for the Browns, with Manziel in a treatment facility for personal issues. If McCown wins the job in training camp, though he shouldn't be considered anything more than a weak QB2 for fantasy owners.

Browns | Josh McCown to work with Johnny Manziel

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 04:18:25 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown will work with QB Johnny Manziel to help him get used to the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: McCown is obviously not the long-term solution in Cleveland, but he provides a bit of stability. His vow to work with Manziel also means the Browns have some faith in their troubled quarterback. McCown is a backup QB in most fantasy leagues, while Manziel remains an intriguing project with little fantasy value at the moment.

Browns | Johnny Manziel progressing

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:41:27 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is making progress during his time at a rehabilitation facility and head coach Mike Pettine said the team is proud of the progress he's making.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel still has a tough hill to climb in order to win the starting quarterback job for the 2015 season. Impending free-agent Brian Hoyer's status is still unknown, however, while the team may also pursue free-agent QB Josh McCown. Nevertheless, Manziel is not worth consideration as a starter in seasonal or daily leagues.

Browns | Jimmy Haslam supports Johnny Manziel

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:48:28 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel still has the support of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam. "I think it's way too early to give up on Johnny,"Haslam told the team's beat writers during a meeting. Haslam went on to say he applauds Manziel for seeking help and the team will do everything it can to support him for "however long that takes."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel had a nightmarish rookie season and has a long way to go to be rosterable in fantasy leagues. However, his ability to accumulate fantasy points using his legs makes him a player worth monitoring during the offseason as he battles for the starting quarterback job in Cleveland.

Browns | Brian Hoyer ready for Round 2?

Sat, 07 Feb 2015 18:10:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer said he would be willing to battle QB Johnny Manziel for the starting job a second time if he re-signs with the team. "It's something I've already done once," he said. "I'm not afraid of doing it twice."

Fantasy Tip: Unless the personnel dramatically changes in the offseason, it's unlikely any quarterback in Cleveland will provide much fantasy value in 2015.

Browns | Johnny Manziel evaluating himself

Mon, 02 Feb 2015 09:25:38 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected to be in rehab for at least a few weeks, but the amount of time he's there largely depends on what a doctor recommends, according to a source close to Manziel. Manziel is voluntarily entering treatment as a result of his lifestyle off the football field, and he wants to "figure out his value system." Nearly 20 Browns sources are on record that Manziel showed a yearlong pattern of a lack of commitment and preparation and a dedication to nightlife that affected his preparation. "Johnny's his own worst enemy," one source said.

Fantasy Tip: With all the negative attention surrounding Manziel heading into the offseason, he doesn't look too attractive to any fantasy squad in 2015. However, he'll likely battle for the starting QB gig next year, and if he wins it, he could be worth a gamble as a backup quarterback with upside.

Browns | Teammates defend Johnny Manziel

Thu, 29 Jan 2015 10:05:07 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had teammates come to his defense after an unidentified player called Manziel a "100 percent joke" last week. "It's not true at all that Johnny's teammates think he's a 100 percent joke," CB Joe Haden said. "There's a lot of players on the team that do [love Manziel]."

Fantasy Tip: Looking ahead, Manziel has a lot of work ahead of him going into the offseason and training camp. At best, he should be considered a risky backup quarterback option in 2015.

Browns | Browns owner not sold on Johnny Manziel

Fri, 23 Jan 2015 10:09:37 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had a big proponent last year in owner Jimmy Haslam, but Haslam now thinks the team needs a quarterback in order to get their team turned in the right direction. "We've got to get a quarterback and got to get it fixed," Haslam said. "What I would say to our fans is, we're going to continue to work really hard to find that quarterback who can make us a championship team." Haslam isn't ruling out Manziel being the starting quarterback in 2015, but he's leaving it open for other options, including QBs Brian Hoyer or Connor Shaw.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Manziel didn't have much time to prove himself at the tail end of last season, it apparently was enough to convince the team that they'll have an open competition at the position in training camp this year. Manziel will likely head into fantasy football draft season as a giant risk as a backup QB.

Browns | Browns not sure who QB is

Thu, 22 Jan 2015 11:38:23 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be working with a new offensive coordinator this year in John DeFilippo, but DeFilippo is unsure if the team's quarterback next year is currently on the roster. "We're not sure if our starting quarterback's in the building right now or not," DeFilippo said. "If he is, that's great. If he's not, that's great, too. Whoever's in that room is going to be coached hard, be held accountable and be expected to do the things that we expect out of Cleveland Browns quarterbacks." DeFilippo said that all Cleveland quarterbacks will begin the offseason with a clean slate.

Fantasy Tip: DeFilippo has been praised as a very bright young mind to mold quarterbacks, but he has limited experience and is moving to a new team. Combine that with the very raw skills we saw in Manziel's limited action last year, and you have to be very uneasy about Manziel's fantasy prospects in just his second year, assuming he even wins the starting QB job in training camp.

Browns | New OC good for Johnny Manziel?

Wed, 21 Jan 2015 13:38:49 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could benefit from new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, according to Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr. Carr said DeFilippo will do great with Manziel, adding that DeFilippo has worked with a running quarterback before in Kansas City Chiefs QB Terrelle Pryor.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Manziel will even start for the Browns in 2015, but the DeFilippo hiring bodes well. At this point, however, it's best to tread lightly with Manziel.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (hamstring) was not present at practice Saturday, Dec. 27. Manziel reportedly still traveled with the team and was not required to attend the walkthrough since he is on the Reserve/Injured list.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel and Brian Hoyer will cede the starting spot to rookie Connor Shaw for the final game of the regular season. Shaw, however, is not worth rostering on FantasyScore.

Browns | Johnny Manziel not out of team's plans

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 14:21:00 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel isn't out of the team's plans for next season after playing only around seven quarters of football in his rookie season, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "He's a player on our roster," Pettine said. "He'll have the chance to compete." Manziel said this week that he pressed too hard as a starter, and he plans to have a much more productive offseason heading into his second year.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is out for Week 17, so don't think about using him at FantasyScore. It's not wise to use Connor Shaw ($5,555) against the Baltimore Ravens, either. For next season, Manziel won't be guaranteed a starting job heading into training camp, so he probably won't be worth a selection late in drafts as a backup in standard leagues.

Browns | Johnny Manziel placed on IR

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 08:41:48 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (hamstring) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Dec. 24.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (hamstring) is out for the rest of the year due to a hamstring injury suffered in Week 16, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: With Manziel out and Brian Hoyer nursing an injury to his throwing shoulder, Connor Shaw could be in line to make the first start of his career this week. Hoyer and Shaw should still be avoided in lineups, however.

Browns | Johnny Manziel questionable for Week 17

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 09:09:57 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (hamstring) is questionable for Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens after hurting his hamstring in Week 16, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Manziel is 18-for-35 for 143 yards, a rushing touchdown and two interceptions in his two starts this year.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel won't be a smart choice for FantasyScore lineups even if he plays against the Ravens. If Brian Hoyer starts in his place, he'll be a cheap alternative at the QB spot, but his limited upside makes him unattractive, as well.

Browns | Cleveland open to QB upgrade

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 00:20:42 -0800

The Cleveland Browns may look to upgrade the quarterback position in the offseason despite the presence of QB Johnny Manziel. Sun, 21 Dec 2014 11:28:31 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (hamstring) left the team's Week 16 game early because of a hamstring injury and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Manziel's injury is not known, so owners should monitor the situation. Brian Hoyer likely will take over as the starter while Manziel is out but is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Browns | OC still has confidence in Johnny Manziel

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 10:52:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel remains an explosive playmaker, and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan isn't giving up on the young quarterback after a rough outing in his first career start last week. "I feel the same about Johnny as I always have," Shanahan said. "Johnny is a playmaker. He's done that throughout his career. Nobody can argue with that at all. There were a couple times in that game he did make some plays. We weren't able to capitalize on it." However, Shanahan acknowledged that success for Manziel won't come immediately. The Browns also know that Manziel's three starts to end the season won't be enough data to know for sure if he's their QB of the future.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will cost you $3,900 at FantasyScore this week. While he may put up better numbers than his atrocious first start, it may only be a marginal improvement. The Carolina Panthers can be beat, but it remains to be seen if Manziel has what it takes at the NFL level. It's smart to stay away in daily leagues.

Browns | Johnny Manziel shows up early

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 10:10:36 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel arrived more than five hours early to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, after struggling in his first NFL start in Week 15. Manziel was 10-for-18 for 80 yards and two interceptions against the Cincinnati Bengals last week.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel ($3,900) remains cheap at FantasyScore, but following his disaster last week, it's hard to put too much trust in the young quarterback as he takes his lumps in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers defense has been a good matchup for most teams all year, but it won't make starting Manziel in daily games much more appealing this week.

Browns | Johnny Manziel prevented from scrambling left

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 13:42:21 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was held to just 107 yards of total offense in the Week 15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Bengals defensive coordinator watched game tape of Manziel's two college losses to Louisiana State and Missouri in order to game plan for him. "Those were his worst two games in college," Guenther said. "You could see obviously what their plan was -- to keep him in the pocket or to move him to a side where he wasn't throwing." The Bengals prevented Manziel from going to his left.

Fantasy Tip: Will this be something the Carolina Panthers defense looks to do in Week 16? It could be, but it's hard to envision Manziel regressing from his performance in his first start. He remains a risky option at FantasyScore, but his floor should be more palatable against the Panthers.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start Week 16

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will start in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Mike Pettine confirmed Sunday, Dec. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Sunday's disaster, the team committed to Manziel after benching Brian Hoyer after last week's game, so there is no turning back now. FantasyScore owners will not want to make the same mistake and should avoid using him.

Browns | Johnny Manziel does nothing

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 14:05:32 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel completed 10 of his 18 pass attempts for just 80 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 15 shutout loss against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was also sacked three times and ended up with a passer rating of just 27.3.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel was a complete disaster for anyone who risked using him in the fantasy playoffs in seasonal leagues or were tempted by his low salary in FantasyScore. Perhaps this is why the Browns waited so long to give him his chance.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start in Week 15

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 09:41:28 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be the starting quarterback in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel clearly has much more upside than Brian Hoyer. Manziel is an exciting but risky fantasy football play in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals, who have done a good job in limiting opposing quarterbacks all season, despite a hiccup against the Pittsburgh Steelers last weekend. He'll be on the cheap side at FantasyScore, but it'll come with plenty of risk as your signal caller.

Browns | Johnny Manziel likely to start

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 05:45:07 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is likely to start in Week 15, according to indications from sources. All that remains is waiting for head coach Mike Pettine to announce it.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel ($4,300; 8.6% of your cap) would be an intriguing play against the Cincinnati Bengals on FantasyScore. There are a lot more proven options to use, though.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to start soon?

Mon, 08 Dec 2014 14:51:05 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could be taking over as starting quarterback in the near future. "I think it's natural to lean the other way, given the results," head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, Dec. 8. Pettine said he, the coaches and general manager Ray Farmer would meet Monday night and make a decision.

Fantasy Tip: If Manziel were to start, he'd have more fantasy value than Hoyer because of his running ability. However, Manziel is still a rookie and has only thrown nine passes this year. The training wheels are still on and starting him against one of the league's better pass defenses in the Cincinnati Bengals may not be a wise choice.
