Browns | Johnny Manziel's injury not serious

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 15:22:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (elbow) has no structural damage in his injured elbow. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel has been dealing with the sore elbow since high school.

Fantasy Tip: Again, unless Josh McCown suffers an injury or plays consistently poorly, Manziel isn't worth drafting this year.

Browns | Johnny Manziel probably won't play

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 14:05:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (elbow) isn't expected to play versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday, Aug. 29, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Manziel is still dealing with elbow soreness and the Browns are taking a cautious approach.

Fantasy Tip: There's no reason to risky any further damage in the preseason, especially with something nagging like Manziel's elbow soreness. Unless Josh McCown gets injured or doesn't play well for an extended period, Manziel doesn't have a lot of fantasy value this year.

Browns | Johnny Manziel will keep throwing motion

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 11:29:48 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel (elbow) will keep his current throwing motion even though the team believes that is what is causing the soreness in his elbow. Manziel did not throw during practice Monday, Aug. 24, so he could rest his elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel could rest his elbow for a few more days but he should be fine moving forward. Manziel has not been ruled out for the starting job but is considered a heavy underdog for the job. Owners should not select Manziel in any fantasy league.

Browns | Johnny Manziel still the backup

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 18:43:18 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still the No. 2 quarterback behind QB Josh McCown, head coach Mike Pettine said Friday, Aug. 21. "We don't want to get too wrapped up in the big picture stuff," Pettine said. "We feel good about where Johnny is as the No. 2 and we feel good about where Josh is with the No. 1 and also understand that a large part of it is a supporting cast thing. Our thoughts on the quarterback picture are the same this morning as they were going into last night.''

Fantasy Tip: Unless McCown absolutely implodes in the next preseason game, Manziel isn't going to be the starter to open the year. Manziel doesn't need to be drafted at this point in any fantasy format.

Browns | Johnny Manziel looking to impress

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:14:01 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel said he is looking to make an impression on the coaching staff with his performances this preseason. "I'm still going out trying to play my best and make an impression," Manziel said. "That's what I want to do. I want to have these guys go into the film tomorrow and turn on the tape and say, 'This guy's really doing things right and this guy's really fighting hard to pick things up and make some plays.'"

Fantasy Tip: Manziel probably will start the season as the backup to Josh McCown unless McCown suffers an injury. Owners should not consider Manziel as an option in any fantasy league.

Browns | Josh McCown still the starter

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 16:06:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is still considered the team's starting quarterback even though QB Johnny Manziel played well in the first preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: McCown likely will open the season as the starting quarterback unless he suffers an injury during the preseason. McCown probably will not post big stats this season and should only be considered as a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Browns | No QB competition in Cleveland

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 12:51:56 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has firm control of the starting quarterback job over QB Johnny Manziel, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said McCown has received all of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice.

Fantasy Tip: McCown has not officially been named the starter for Week 1, but it looks like only an injury would change the decision. McCown likely will not post big numbers this season and should not be more than a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Pettine also said that Manziel has been dealing with minor elbow soreness. Manziel will still play in the Browns' preseason opener against the Washington Redskins Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is still expected to back up Brian Hoyer when the season starts. He has more value in dynasty leagues.

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 07:50:41 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel isn't throwing in practice Tuesday, Aug. 11, and has a sleeve on his right arm. QB Connor Shaw is taking second-team repetitions.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel might still be worth a dynasty league spot, but he's a watch list player in single-year leagues.

Browns | QB situation in CLE unchanged

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 14:44:54 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown had some real nice passes during practice Monday, Aug. 10, but QB Johnny Manziel continues to look more focused, and he also saw some time with the starters Monday.

Fantasy Tip: This could be a very fluid situation during training camp and through the preseason. McCown currently leads, but it could change based on how these two QBs look in game action. Either way, neither QB is worth more than mediocre QB2 fantasy value.

Browns | Johnny Manziel has solid scrimmage

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 17:11:56 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel went 9-for-11 for 93 yards and two touchdowns during the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7. Manziel was expected to play with the first-team offense during the scrimmage but did not receive any snaps with that unit.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is still considered a candidate for the starting quarterback job but has to continue to play well if he wants a chance to beat Josh McCown for the job. Owners in fantasy leagues probably should avoid Manziel even if he wins the job.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to work with starters

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 09:09:44 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will work with the first-team offense during the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7. Head coach Mike Pettine said QB Josh McCown is still the leading candidate for the starting job and that backups need time with the starters.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has performed well so far during training camp, but it appears like he will start the season as the No. 2 quarterback if McCown stays healthy. Owners should avoid Manziel during their drafts.

Browns | Johnny Manziel improving

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 07:47:14 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has completed 69% of his passes in practice thus far, while he completed 56% of passes at this time last year. "He is clearly engaged this year," owner Jimmy Haslam said. "He physically looks better. He looks like a pro athlete should."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is unlikely to overtake Josh McCown for the starting job to start the season, but he's worth keeping an eye on for watch lists.

Browns | Johnny Manziel inconsistent Thursday

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 11:36:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had good and bad moments during practice Thursday, July 30. Manziel worked with the second-team offense during practice and had some problems during drills. During one series of drills, he would have been sacked on the first two snaps, almost threw an interception and had a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. He did make two nice throws during another part of team drills.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is believed to have a chance for the starting job, but Josh McCown likely would have to really struggle during the preseason for Manziel to win the job. Owners probably should avoid both quarterbacks this season.

Browns | Johnny Football enters camp as No. 2

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 19:31:11 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel enters training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, although head coach Mike Pettine offered no guarantees Monday, July 27, that QB Josh McCown will be the Week 1 starter. "The repetitions will (still) be handled that way, with Josh as the one," Pettine said. "Now, I wouldn't say I'm guaranteeing today that Josh McCown is going to be the starter against the Jets."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel can still win the starting job with a strong training camp and preseason, but apparently the team likes McCown's experience and leadership enough to anoint him the starter heading into camp. Whomever emerges as the starter is still only worth using as a low-end QB2 in standard fantasy formats.

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 13:17:02 -0700

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 08:07:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel recently worked with former NFL head coach Jon Gruden in hopes of improving his film work and mechanics, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is expected to have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job, but Josh McCown will be the heavy favorite entering training camp. Manziel likely would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he were able to win the job.

Browns | Too soon to write off Johnny Manziel?

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 17:42:03 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel just "needs more time" to develop and learn how to play from the pocket in order to become an effective NFL quarterback, according to Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther.

Fantasy Tip: While Guenther may by right, Manziel isn't likely to have a chance to gain much in-game experience in 2015, at least to start the year. Outside of a late-round stash in dynasty formats, Manziel can be left on the waiver wire in fantasy leagues.

Browns | Former QB praises Johnny Manziel

Sat, 27 Jun 2015 18:28:01 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is trending in the right direction, former QB Elvis Grbac said. "It's obviously a learning experience," Grbac said. "I think he's going in the right direction. He's on the right path. I think it'll be somewhat of a rude awakening the first couple games of the season and he will have to adjust."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is expected to open the year as Josh McCown's backup, and although he may see some playing time as the year goes on, he is at least a year away from having any kind of fantasy value.

Browns | Johnny Manziel struggling with accuracy

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 10:25:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel continues to struggle with throwing accuracy, but he showed improvement in little things, such as getting the plays called and off on time.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel appears to have very little chance at overtaking Josh McCown as the starter before the season. He still has some dynasty league value, but he has very little single-year league value.

Browns | Johnny Manziel living with former coach

Fri, 12 Jun 2015 14:26:50 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is living in the Cleveland area with former high school coach Julius Scott since Scott had a big influence in Manziel earlier in his career. Scott was considered the disciplinarian on Manziel's high school team, and Manziel said Scott made the biggest impact on his development as a player.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has had a busy offseason off the field but likely will enter training camp as the No. 2 quarterback and may not be given the chance to compete for the starting job. Owners should avoid Manziel until he becomes a starter.

Browns | Johnny Manziel not being ruled out

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 18:17:55 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is not being counted out by quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell. When asked if there's a chance Manziel can beat out QB Josh McCown, O'Connell replied, "Yeah, I think right now coach (Mike) Pettine's been very clear that Josh is here for a reason, but we build everything around here on competition and that's how everybody gets better. And that's why it's important that this spring that we've been able to install our offense and give these guys the tools they need come the fall that we can have a competitive environment," O'Connell said Thursday, June 11.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is still facing an uphill climb in his quest for the starter's job, but it's certainly interesting to finally hear something positive from a member of the coaching staff. Manziel's fantasy prospects will continue to rise until someone else is officially named the starter.

Sun, 31 May 2015 23:39:15 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel was involved in an altercation with a fan on Saturday, May 30, at a PGA event. Manziel reportedly threw a water bottle at a fan who had been harassing him for an autograph.

Fantasy Tip: According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, it appears the fan was in the wrong here as he was constantly harassing and grabbing at Manziel. The embattled Browns QB needs to rid himself of stuff like this if he is to become a truly good player in the league.

Browns | Johnny Manziel impressing OC

Fri, 22 May 2015 10:20:20 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has impressed Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo since Manziel has returned from a stint in a treatment center. Cleveland's new play-caller said Manziel is spending every hour that he is allowed to spend in the building and is putting himself into a position to be an NFL quarterback. DeFilippo said he wouldn't sacrifice Manziel's athleticism to pigeonhole him into a scheme that doesn't fit his skill set.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has to beat out Josh McCown for the starting gig in Cleveland, but it is encouraging to see DeFilippo praising his work ethic. A lot has to change between now and Week 1, but Manziel has enough upside to warrant a QB2 roster spot if he finally looks the part of pro passer in the preseason.

Thu, 21 May 2015 07:20:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will fully participate in organized team activities starting Tuesday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel needs to win the starting job, distance himself from the competition, and earn the trust of fantasy owners before deserving a draft selection this summer. He's a shaky QB2 draft target in the an optimistic scenario.

Browns | Johnny Manziel intends to start

Sat, 16 May 2015 16:37:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel intends to be the team's 2015 starter, according to teammate CB Joe Haden. "He's a competitor. I think it's all about competition. We have Josh McCown. We have Johnny. We have (Connor) Shaw. All those guys. Just all of them feel like they can win the starting job," said Haden.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Manziel beats the odds and is named the Browns' starting quarterback out of training camp, the reality of Josh Gordon's suspension and Jordan Cameron's free-agent departure will limit Manziel's fantasy potential. Manziel will likely open the season as nothing more than a late-round flier in two-quarterback leagues.

Browns | Coach not on board with Johnny Manziel

Fri, 15 May 2015 08:57:51 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has turned off head coach Mike Pettine, while general manager Ray Farmer, owner Jimmy Haslam and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo believe Manziel can be salvaged, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine has installed Josh McCown as the starter entering training camp, and Manziel will have to earn the spot back. McCown obviously isn't the answer at 35, so the potential for Manziel is still there. At this rate, McCown is a low-end QB2, and Manziel shouldn't be drafted.

Browns | Johnny Manziel praised by OC

Sat, 09 May 2015 20:45:20 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is putting himself in positon to be an NFL quarterback, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said Saturday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: It is important to note that in the same interview DeFilippo also said that Josh McCown has taken command of the offense so Manziel is still a longshot to open the year as the starter. He will likely see playing time at some point, especially if the Browns fall out of contention, but Manziel will likely have no fantasy value when the year begins.

Browns | Johnny Manziel moves out of city

Wed, 06 May 2015 10:50:43 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel has decided to move out of his downtown Cleveland apartment and will be living at a golf course community in one of the city's suburbs, according to a source. Manziel has been working on studying his playbook since leaving rehab, and his teammates have seen a change in his attitude. Manziel be been playing golf to help after leaving rehab.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is expected to enter training camp as the No. 2 quarterback but should have the chance to win the starting job. Owners should monitor the situation to see who wins the job, but Manziel likely would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he starts.

Browns | Josh McCown the favorite to start for Browns

Tue, 05 May 2015 09:18:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is the favorite to start training camp as the team's starting quarterback, with head coach Mike Pettine saying "it's fair to say." QB Johnny Manziel struggled last year as a rookie and was in rehab for 10 weeks. McCown is the most experienced quarterback the team has on roster.

Fantasy Tip: McCown will still face competition from Manziel and the other quarterbacks on roster later this summer, but McCown will have the leg up. With a mediocre receiving corps and largely unproven backfield, McCown, if he winds up winning the job, is a lackluster QB2 option for fantasy owners.

Browns | Johnny Manziel in second spot

Mon, 04 May 2015 20:12:39 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected to open training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, as head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, May 4, "I think it's fair to say" that QB Josh McCown will open camp atop the depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has plenty of time to get things in order and make a run for the starting job. Whoever comes away as the winner of the starting job is still nothing more than a QB2 in standard fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Browns | QB still an issue in Cleveland?

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:42:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine doesn't seem overly concerned with the Browns' current state at quarterback. Pettine said the quarterback position isn't the only position that wins football games. QBs Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, Thaddeus Lewis and Connor Shaw are currently on Cleveland's roster.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine could very well start McCown or one of the other current quarterbacks for Week 1. The Browns seem to catching some flak for not drafting a quarterback, but Pettine doesn't seem phased by it. Whoever starts will be a fantasy backup.

Browns | Johnny Manziel committed in camp

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 17:35:10 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel's commitment is "night and day" from last year, according to Browns OT Joe Thomas, Tuesday, April 28. Manziel has been participating in the Browns' voluntary offseason workout program since it began April 20. "This year on a Saturday if you came in the building, you'd see him studying his playbook and watching film with his coach. It's pretty apparent he's realized how important football is to him, and he's realized that in the NFL you can't get away with maybe some of the things that you did in college because it's a big boys' game now," said Thomas.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will also have to regain the trust of fantasy owners. With Josh McCown as competition for the Browns' starting job, Manziel currently holds zero fantasy value. Even if Manziel wins the starter's job, he'll only be a late-round option in two-quarterback leagues.

Browns | Johnny Manziel has to earn trust

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 09:55:32 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will need to earn back the trust of his teammates and prove that he's dedicating to winning after a voluntary rehab treatment, according to Browns OT Joe Thomas. "I think he's going to have to prove to the team that football is important and being the man, being the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, is important, it is his goal, his single goal in his life," Thomas said.

Fantasy Tip: There's no telling how Manziel will respond to rehab for alcohol and other issues in 2015. He's an extremely risky fantasy selection, and he's not even guaranteed the starting job, as he'll have to win it from from Josh McCown in training camp.

Browns | CLE moving on from Johnny Manziel?

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 09:02:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel may be out of time with the Browns, as ESPN insider Chris Mortensen indicated the team is ready to move on. "I think about 90% that they have moved on (from Manziel) in their own minds except that they really don't know who they're going to get when Johnny leaves rehab, which has been an extended stay," Mortensen said on ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" Friday, April 3. "He should be getting out sometime in the first week of April if they're satisfied that he's ready to go out and get into society and that whatever deep-rooted problems that he had has been addressed. The bottom line is that Johnny Manziel's future with the Browns has been in question. When they were putting together half of a new offensive staff, Manziel's name barely even came up in conversation."

Fantasy Tip: The team brought Josh McCown in to compete with Manziel, and there is still a shot "Johnny Football" could win the job. Both of them are low-end QB2 options.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is expected back with the team for offseason workouts April 20 after completing more than two months of treatment.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel will have to beat out Josh McCown for the starting job in camp, and he's a low-end QB2 flyer in traditional drafts.

Browns | Cleveland not banking on Johnny Manziel

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 11:23:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel won't be counted on for the 2015 season, especially after the Browns offered a late first-round pick to try to acquire Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Cleveland could also select a quarterback in the first couple of rounds in this year's draft.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is still in rehab for personal issues, and the Browns recently signed Josh McCown to compete for the starting job in training camp. Cleveland would be wise not to count on Manziel being in the picture at this point. Heading into fall fantasy drafts, Manziel shouldn't be high on your radar as anything more than a very weak QB2.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still in inpatient rehab, but he is likely at the point where he can leave the facility for brief stints. Earlier reports said that he had left the facility.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen when Manziel will leave rehab, but when he does, he is expected to make a run at the starting quarterback job in Cleveland.
