Browns | Johnny Manziel needs more dedication

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 19:14:37 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine thinks QB Johnny Manziel needs to increase dedication to earn the starting job. "I think he knows that in order to compete well, he's going to have to probably be more dedicated than ever."

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer is believed to have the leg up in the competition for the starting signal caller job in Cleveland, but it is a wide open competition, too. If Manziel can win the job during training camp and the preseason, he would still be best used as a QB2 only for when your primary fantasy option has a difficult matchup or bye. The loss of WR Josh Gordon for an undetermined period hurts the value of whomever wins the job.

Browns | Starting QB will be named in preseason

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:06:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will know who is starting before the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine, though it could happen sooner. Pettine has expressed hesitation to name Manziel the starter immediately and thinks Hoyer's chances are underrated.

Fantasy Tip: It depends heavily on how Hoyer responds during his knee recovery. This could be a battle to watch during the season. Manziel is nothing more than a low-end QB2 and ideally ranks as a third slinger for 2014 fantasy football drafts. Hoyer could be a sneaky QB3 in such leagues that require that depth.

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:05:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel talked with head coach Mike Pettine, who expressed concerns about Manziel's off-field behavior. Pettine said it was a "positive conversation" and that he doesn't feel as if Manziel's purported party activities will be a problem once the NFL season starts.

Fantasy Tip: Hopefully, the Manziel news starts to trend toward the quarterback battle he'll have with Brian Hoyer.

Browns | Brian Hoyer fully cleared

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 10:46:28 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) said he's been fully cleared to participate in training camp, confirming Hoyer's belief that he wouldn't be limited.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer played well before tearing his ACL last year, but it's unclear whether Hoyer or QB Johnny Manziel will start the season opener. Manziel has more potential while Hoyer has the experience. Neither one of them is a reliable fantasy quarterback at this point, but we'd draft Manziel before Hoyer.

Browns | Chris Johnson supports Johnny Manziel

Sun, 06 Jul 2014 07:10:39 -0700

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson supported Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel, saying he should be his own man when it comes to off the field activities. "Be your own man," Johnson said. "Do what you got to do. It's the offseason. That's when you get time to do whatever you want to do and live your life. I'm pretty sure once the season gets here, he'll be all right. He's going to focus in on football. But this is the time now to where he'll be able to hang out and do some of the things you want to do. Because once the season gets here, you really have no life. It's just football and football."

"I'm growing up and continuing to learn from my mistakes and trying not to make the same ones over and over again, but am I going to live in a shell or am I just going to hide from everybody and not do anything? Thu, 19 Jun 2014 10:45:26 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will ideally not be the opening-day starter, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: Despite all the excitement and intrigue surrounding Manziel, he's still not ready to be a starting fantasy quarterback. It's best to use the wait-and-see approach with him this year.

Browns | Johnny Manziel needs to hit the books

Fri, 13 Jun 2014 11:44:12 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel must study the team's playbook before training camp next month if he's going to have a realistic chance to unseat QB Brian Hoyer as the starting quarterback, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "I think he shouldn't concern himself so much where Brian is, but where he is," the coach said. "He's going to have plenty of tape to study -- his own work, the team work, opponent's tape, a whole volume of Redskins tape. The more he familiarizes himself with that, the better off he'll be."

Fantasy Tip: This much we know: Manziel is behind Hoyer in the QB competition. It'll likely stay that way unless Manziel makes significant strides in training camp and the preseason. The team won't rush Manziel into a starting role.

Browns | Brian Hoyer showing maturity

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 11:18:03 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has showed his advantage over QB Johnny Manziel in practices with his ability to quickly scan the defense and go through his progressions, then anticipate his receivers coming open and deliver the ball accurately. Of note, though, is that head coach Mike Pettine continues to keep defenders from getting too close to Hoyer in team drills. "Manziel may be just a little bit late, but that's what you'd expect. He's only been in the offense a month and a half," WR Anthony Armstrong said.

However, the coaches aren't disappointed with Manziel's play in organized team activities. "He's getting more comfortable in the huddle, calling the plays," Pettine said. "I think he's got a very nice touch with the deep ball. We've added some of the zone read stuff that Kyle's run with RG3 in Washington and he's done a nice job handling that. He makes improvement every day."

Fantasy Tip: This is precisely the reason why the Browns have penciled in Hoyer as the starter heading into Week 1, for now. That isn't to say that Manziel can't move ahead of him in training camp and the preseason, but it's unlikely, for now.

Cowboys | Jerry Jones admits it was hard to pass on Johnny Manziel

Sat, 07 Jun 2014 07:06:04 -0700

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits it was tough to pass on QB Johnny Manziel in the NFL Draft. "Well, it was," Jones said. "Yes, it was. First of all, I couldn't believe he had fallen there. And secondly, we had spent a lot of time, I'd spent a lot of time. He's the kind of player that can be that kind of difference-maker. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll be a successful player. We have in Romo what I consider to be the better quarterback. But there's also the future, there's also insurance if you don't have him. If anybody could have adjusted to Manziel's style, we could have because we're a lot like that with Romo."

Browns | Johnny Manziel making plays during workouts

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 09:05:46 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said QB Johnny Manziel has made some good plays during organized team activities but it is hard to judge him since the defense is not allowed to hit him. "It's difficult when he's got the red shirt on and the defensive guys know they can't tackle him," Pettine said. "It's hard to get glimpses of that. But we did some design rollouts with him and he's shown when he can get in the open field, he can run through an angle and he can eat up some ground pretty quickly." Manziel was able to make several good throws while rolling out of the pocket during organized team activities Tuesday, June 3, but also threw two interceptions during the workout.

Browns | OC sees similarties between Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin

Fri, 30 May 2014 15:10:29 -0700

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said QB Johnny Manziel reminds him of Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III. Shanahan worked with Griffin in Washington. "Johnny and Robert are very similar," Shanahan said. "They're both talented guys who can make plays with their legs. But there comes a time in the NFL when they're going to keep you in the pocket, and you're going to have to have that ability to make the throws with your arm and mind." Shanahan has been impressed with Manziel's work ethic so far during organized team activities in his mission to win the starting quarterback job in his rookie year.

Fantasy Tip: It sure sounds as if Shanahan likes Manziel, although the Browns have said that Brian Hoyer (knee) will start in Week 1 if he's healthy. Manziel should be able to win the starting job outright if he applies himself throughout the offseason. Don't expect Shanahan to work his magic with Manziel in the way he did with RGIII immediately, however. There will be plenty of growing pains. Enough to make Manziel avoidable for fantasy football.

"I just think just like any other rookie that he's inconsistent," Browns coach Mike Pettine said after the second day of the entire team being on the practice field. "I think a lot of it is the mental part of it. [Manziel] is more worrying about getting the formation right, making sure the motion's correct. Then he's got the cadence, and then he's got to worry about where guys are. "Being good mechanically takes a backseat to learning the system first."

Browns | Johnny Manziel knows he has work to do

Mon, 19 May 2014 09:57:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel knows that he'll have to work to earn the starting job in Cleveland, and that nothing will be handed to him right off the bat. "I'm a rookie," Manziel said. "I need to earn my place. I need to earn my keep. Nothing here needs to be handed to me. I don't need to be treated based off what I did in the past because that doesn't mean a thing at this level."

Fantasy Tip: Manziel is facing an uphill battle for the starting quarterback job, as Mike Pettine stated earlier this offseason that it's Brian Hoyer's job to lose. We're not ruling out the fact that Manziel could win the job outright in training camp, but it's unlikely.

Thu, 08 May 2014 19:34:30 -0700

Fantasy Tip: At this point, they had to. The commitment and obligation to play him here is hardly as risky. He'll probably start, though Brian Hoyer (knee) may begin 2014 if Manziel doesn't have it out of the gate. With some nice weapons in Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron, and with Ben Tate poised to improve the running game, Manziel is a fantasy backup in your pick 'em with the upside to be a fantasy starter down the road. That could be a very rough trip to get there in the near future, though, even though this system should help him.
