Pirates | Brandon Cumpton optioned, Jaff Decker recalled

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 12:44:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Brandon Cumpton was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis Thursday, July 10. In a corresponding move, OF Jaff Decker was recalled from Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Cumpton wasn't scheduled to pitch before the All-Star break, so this could be more of a formality than anything. However, he did get beat around Wednesday, July 9, by the St. Louis Cardinals. Don't expect much fantasy production from Decker.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole throws

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 12:29:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (lat) threw on flat ground a few times from approximately 45 or 60 feet Thursday, July 10.

Fantasy Tip: Clearly, Cole isn't close to returning. Continue to stash him in all formats. Jeff Locke and Brandon Cumpton will continue to fill out the Pirates rotation in his absence. Locke is worth consideration in all formats, at least in favorable matchups. Cumpton has fleeting NL-only value, unless Cole is out longer than the expected few weeks.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole Update

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 14:25:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (lat) has no timetable for a return, but he will make a minor league rehab start before rejoining the team, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, a rehab start further delays Cole's return to the Pirates. Continue to stash Cole. In the short term, Brandon Cumpton maintains NL-only value, and he is worthy of spot starting in favorable matchups in mixed leagues.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole to DL

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 07:19:16 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (lat) was scratched from his start Wednesday, July 9, with tightness in his right lat and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list. SP Brandon Cumpton will take his start.

Fantasy Tip: Cole could miss a few weeks of action with this latest setback. Cumpton is worth a look in NL-only leagues for depth purposes.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole will push someone out of rotation

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 14:50:39 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole's (shoulder) return Saturday, June 28, will push someone out of the starting rotation, but manager Clint Hurdle has not disclosed any information. Two candidates for demotions are SPs Jeff Locke and Brandon Cumpton, because they have minor league options remaining, while SP Vance Worley does not. Pirates SP Edinson Volquez was scheduled to pitch Saturday, June 28, on normal rest but is being skipped in favor of Cole.

Fantasy Tip: Check back for updates, because anyone starting for the Pirates has value to NL-only owners. Locke, Cumpton and Worley have all pitched well of late and are potential options in mixed leagues, at least, in favorable matchups. Volquez's inconsistency is frustrating, but it would be a bold move for Hurdle to remove him from the starting rotation.

Pirates | Brandon Cumpton to start Monday

Sun, 25 May 2014 10:57:41 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Brandon Cumpton will start against the New York Mets Monday, May 26. General manager Neal Huntington would like to see him work on improving his changeup and slider, in order to avoid struggling when he faces batters during their second or third times through the order.

Pirates | Brandon Cumpton appears to be top candidate

Thu, 22 May 2014 19:55:32 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Brandon Cumpton appears to be the leading candidate to start Monday, May 26, because SP Jeff Locke started for Triple-A Indianapolis Thursday, May 22, and likely would not be ready for the start.

Pirates | Jeff Locke, Brandon Cumpton candidates for rotation

Thu, 22 May 2014 13:09:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said SPs Jeff Locke and Brandon Cumpton are candidates to come up and take the rotation spot of SP Wandy Rodriguez, who was designated for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Locke might be the favorite here because he has more experience starting in the big leagues. Neither pitcher is very attractive for those outside of NL-only leagues, however.
