Rangers | Chi Chi Gonzalez has partially torn UCL

Sat, 18 Mar 2017 06:29:10 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Gonzalez (elbow) has been diagnosed with a partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament, according to team physician Dr. Keith Meister. He woke up with soreness Friday, March 17, and an MRI exam revealed the injury. Gonzalez will receive an injection of platelet-rich plasma and will rest for six weeks but he is expected to miss the first half of the 2017 season in a best-case scenario. If Gonzalez does not show adequate progress in his recovery, he could require Tommy John surgery.

Rangers | Chi Chi Gonzalez demoted

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 17:41:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Texas Rangers have optioned SP Chi Chi Gonzalez to Class AAA Round Rock. In a corresponding move, RP Alex Claudio was recalled from Round Rock.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is 0-2 with an 8.71 ERA through three MLB starts this season, with nine walks and just seven strikeouts through 10 1/3 innings. The club will not need a fifth starter until July 19, but there is no guarantee that Gonzalez will be recalled for that game based on the way he's performed.

Rangers | Chi Chi Gonzalez struggles again

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 04:21:12 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Gonzalez fell to 0-2 overall Thursday, July 7, when he lasted just 4 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on nine hits in a 10-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers may be doing well despite losing six of their last eight games, but Gonzalez is showing signs of being overmatched and needing more seasoning. Do not be surprised to see him either optioned out to the minors if able, or at the least removed from the rotation.

Rangers | Chi Chi Gonzalez pitches well again

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 23:32:42 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Gonzalez worked three scoreless innings in his Cactus League spring appearance Wednesday, March 9, against the Cincinnati Reds, scattering three hits. However, as well as he pitched he has zero strikeouts against 19 batters faced.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has impressed during the early part of spring and has to be considered an odds-on favorite for one of the two open rotation spots at the back end. Gonzo is worth a flier in the late rounds in AL-only fantasy leagues, but don't bother with him in mixed formats, even if he wins a job, especially if he has underwhelming strikeout totals.

Rangers | Chi Chi Gonzalez a rotation favorite

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 15:46:58 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Gonzalez is the early favorite for the fifth starter job this spring. He's making his second outing of the spring Wednesday, March 9.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez went 4-6 last year with a 3.90 ERA in 67 innings and is really only a consideration in AL-only leagues if he keeps the job.

Rangers | No. 5 job in Texas up for grabs

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:37:24 -0800

Texas Rangers SPs Jeremy Guthrie and Nick Tepesch are among the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring along with SPs Chi Chi Gonzalez, A.J. Griffin, Nick Martinez, Cesar Ramos and Anthony Ranaudo.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 5 rotation spot will be worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues, while the losers are headed to the bullpen or minors and should be avoided for now.

Marlins | Miami interested in Chi Chi Gonzalez

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 17:21:13 -0800

The Miami Marlins recently discussed a potential deal with the Texas Rangers which would have sent OF Marcell Ozuna to Texas, in exchange for SP Chi Chi Gonzalez and another player.

Fantasy Tip: The Fish are looking for a player (or players) who can contribute immediately at the major-league level in all possible trade scenarios involving Ozuna. Gonzalez went 4-6 with a 3.90 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) as a rookie last season, although he struggled with control, walking 32 batters while striking out just 30 over 67 innings. A move to a more pitcher-friendly stadium like Marlins Park should increase the right-hander's fantasy value, especially considering how offensively-challenged many of the clubs in the NL East are. Ozuna should be viewed as a solid OF3 with upside, although his fantasy value should increase slightly if he winds up playing his home games in Texas.

Rangers | Cole Hamels pushed back to Monday

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 11:02:12 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) will be pushed back to start Monday, Sept. 14. SP Chi Chi Gonzalez will pitch Sunday, Sept. 13.

Fantasy Tip: With the rotation shakeup, Hamels ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) will now face the Houston Astros at home Monday. The Astros strike out plenty but have potent bats, making Hamels a risk/reward option on FantasyScore coming off injury. Gonzalez has a nice matchup against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, but he's still not a very strong play in daily formats.
