Cardinals | Marco Gonzales hitting reset button

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 14:04:37 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales, whose 2015 season was hampered by shoulder problems, may be out of the rotation entering spring training. "I've already hit the restart button," Gonzales said. "That disappointment kind of turned into my work ethic this offseason and turning that into me being healthy."

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales saw his chances at the rotation dim when Mike Leake was signed, and the rotation figures to be Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Leake. Right now Gonzales may make a decent sleeper pick in the late rounds of NL and mixed drafts, because he may be one injury away from a rotation spot.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales could be used in relief

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 17:27:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales could be used as a left-handed reliever next season, according to general manager John Mozeliak. RP Randy Choate is set to become a free agent and the team is reportedly interested in having a lefty in the bullpen who isn't as specialized.

Fantasy Tip: In other words, the Cards would like to have a left-handed reliever who is capable of facing more than one or two left-handed hitters at a time. Gonzales is 4-2 with a 4.82 ERA in 11 career games in the majors, six of which were starts, but only had one big league appearance in 2015.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez being skipped

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 10:12:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will be skipped in the rotation against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, Sept. 1, in favor of SP Marco Gonzales, who will be making his season debut. Gonzales is the Cardinals' No. 4 ranked prospect, and he went 1-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 17 starts in the minors this year.

Fantasy Tip: This is likely just a spot start for Gonzales, so owning him anywhere outside of deep NL-only or keeper leagues isn't advised. It's also not advised to use him on FantasyScore against the Nats tonight.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales makes first Class AA start

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 06:26:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales pitched three scoreless innings with Class AA Springfield Friday, July 17.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales is working his way back from a pectoral injury which sidelined him for over two months. He is a highly regarded lefty, who could work his way into the St. Louis rotation before the end of the season. Monitor his progress as he stretches out in the minors, as the Cardinals have a knack for turning out high-end hurlers. There is potential for a fantasy return down the stretch.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales on the mend

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 08:17:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Friday, July 10, and could be ready by July 25. He'll likely start for Class A Palm Beach and throw 35-40 pitches first.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales will either be considered to take a rotation spot if Jaime Garcia (groin) hasn't returned or re-join the rotation at Triple-A Memphis. He's worth holding in NL-only formats.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales back into action

Wed, 06 May 2015 05:51:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales (pectoral) will return to the rotation at Triple-A Memphis Saturday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales could take the spot in the team's rotation that is in flux with Tyler Lyons and Tim Cooney unable to get through five innings in two starts. He should need a start or two before being considered, but pick him up if your rotation is thin because he has staying power.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales update

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 07:08:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales (pectoral) is dealing with a sore pectoral muscle and not a shoulder injury.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales is the most likely to fill Adam Wainwright's (Achilles') rotation spot long term once he returns to action. Because he's so young, he'll likely have an innings cap, but he should be owned in deeper formats and watched closely in traditional leagues.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales has shoulder issue

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 06:48:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales (shoulder) was placed on the 7-day disabled list at Triple-A Memphis with tightness in his left shoulder. He'll miss one start and be re-evaluated.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales is a bright prospect that would be next in line if one of the starters goes down. He has been working on a cutter and a curveball to complement his fastball-changeup combination. Keep an eye on his status.

Cardinals | Marco Gonzales sent down

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 07:43:24 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Marco Gonzales was optioned to Triple-A Memphis Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzales is worth stashing in NL-only leagues as he's likely the first to come up for a spot start. The move means more for SP Carlos Martinez, who has likely locked up the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of your cap) will be a great low-end SP option on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia says he's a starter

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:23:59 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is adamant that he is a starting pitcher. However, he's made just 16 starts in the last two seasons and thrown less than 100 innings because of injuries. Garcia had left shoulder surgery last year, specifically to address thoracic outlet syndrome. He is coming into spring training on a normal schedule, though, and he'll compete with SPs Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's surgery last year was a significant one, and one that is typically tough to rebound from. We don't suggest taking a chance on Garcia in standard 12-team leagues unless he wins the final rotation spot, and that's a big if. Consider him an NL-only target as a cheap investment for now.
