Cubs | Javier Baez, Kris Bryant sent down

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:53:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa Monday, March 30, and 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell were assigned to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Baez, unlike Bryant, really struggled to make consistent contact this spring. It could be a while before the Cubbies bring him back up, as they'll likely want to see him cut down on his swings and misses. Bryant, on the other hand, could be up very soon after the first week or so of the regular season. Both Bryant and Baez should remain owned in all formats. The moves assure that Arismendy Alcantara ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will see consistent playing time on the infield to start the year, and he'll be a sneaky FantasyScore play in the early going. Alcantara is worth a gamble in the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Kris Bryant needs more seasoning?

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 11:38:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant says that he is ready to start the 2015 season in the major leagues, but team president Theo Epstein said the team is still evaluating the youngster, and he might need more seasoning in the minors before he makes his major league debut. Bryant currently leads all of baseball with nine home runs this spring and his batting .406 with 15 RBI. "I've never put a guy on an opening day roster who hadn't played in the big leagues previously. In 13 years, I've never done it," Epstein said. The Cubs can prevent Bryant from becoming a free agent until 2021 if he doesn't make his debut until at least mid-April.

Fantasy Tip: It seems likely that Bryant will start 2015 in the minors, but it surely won't be long before he'll make his major league debut. He belong on all fantasy rosters, and because of his excellent spring, he'll surely be way overpriced. Bryant's lack of consistent contact is a red flag, but his overwhelming power stroke is worth overpaying for, especially in keeper leagues.

Cubs | Rough game for Kris Bryant

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 18:37:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant struck out looking three times Thursday, March 26.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant's power potential is through the roof, but occasional rough patches are to be expected from any young player. Don't let a bad game stop you from taking Bryant in the middle rounds of your fantasy draft.

Cubs | Kris Bryant belts another spring HR

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 22:14:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant belted his ninth homer run of the spring Tuesday, March 24, against the Oakland Athletics in Cactus League action.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is expected to spend the first nine days of the regular season with Triple-A Iowa, buying the organization an extra year of service time. He is still worth a middle-round draft pick in all fantasy formats because of his power potential. He could be dinging homers off of the gaudy new scoreboard in left field at Wrigley Field all summer.

Cubs | Kris Bryant to the outfield?

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 17:51:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is likely to play in the outfield in the next couple of days. Manager Joe Maddon indicated he's going to try to get hm into the game as an outfielder in that time frame. Bryant made his third error playing third base this spring Tuesday, March 24. The Cubs claim he's still their third baseman of the future.

Fantasy Tip: The Cubs have an embarrassment of young infield talent, and an outfield move for Bryant is something that has been speculated. He'll be third base eligible this year and gaining outfield eligibility would be a nice bonus. He's a thoroughly hyped power-hitting prospect who is worth drafting in all leagues, but he'll likely require an early-round pick.

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 14:09:58 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B/OF Kris Bryant hit his seventh home run of the spring off Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Tip: It's still a stretch to expect the blue-chip prospect to begin the season in the majors. Bryant is available on FantasyScore for $4,700, which equates to 9.4% of your cap for the season opener.

Cubs | Kris Bryant returning to third Saturday

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 13:21:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (shoulder) is expected to return to the field and play third base Saturday, March 21. He has served as a designated hitter this week because of shoulder fatigue.

Fantasy Tip: There is no denying Bryant's top-tier power potential, but there are two camps of thought when it comes to his fantasy value. On one hand, he offers upside at a thin position and is worth reaching for in the early middle rounds. On the other hand, there is the camp suggesting Bryant is overvalued, especially considering he struck out in 27% of his minor league plate appearances last season. There will come a point in drafts where the reward outweighs the risk, but it is unlikely to surface often with Bryant's stock skyrocketing. Still, the upside is immense.

Cubs | Kris Bryant nearing return to the field?

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 17:05:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (shoulder) had a successful throwing session Thursday, March 19. He will be evaluated Friday, March 20, and should return to third base shortly after.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is a highly coveted, power-hitting prospect who's being overvalued in drafts. He has the upside to deliver for those who invest an early mid-round pick in him, but he's a risky selection due to his propensity for striking out.

Cubs | Kris Bryant and Super 2

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 10:27:34 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant currently leads the majors in spring home runs with six, but the Cubs may use the "Super 2" rule to delay his call-up to the major leagues in 2015 to delay his arbitration eligibility. If Bryant spends the first nine games of the year in the minors, the Cubs would be able to keep him from free agency until 2021 instead of 2020. The Cubs are expected to send Bryant to the minors to begin the season, even after he hit 43 home runs in the minors last season.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is a stud in waiting, but the fact that he won't start the year in the majors won't hurt his draft value at all. In fact, he's inevitably going to be overvalued in 2015 drafts for his monster power potential on an up-and-coming Cubbies team. If you want him, be prepared to overspend.
