Blue Jays | Drew Storen the closer in Toronto?

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:17:09 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Drew Storen looks to be the likely closer for the Blue Jays in 2016 over RP Roberto Osuna, although Toronto could have a competition for the role deep into spring training. There is no rush to make a decision. Storen has more experience as a closer and will be paid $8.375 million. Osuna is a former starter, too, and it could be attractive to have the option of using him for multiple innings as a setup man. RP Aaron Sanchez is a dark horse candidate, but it looks like he'll have the chance to win a starting job this spring.

Fantasy Tip: You'll have to keep a close eye on the competition this spring, but if you're drafting before then, speculate on Storen once the top closers come off the board. Whoever loses the job will lose significant fantasy value as a reliever.

Blue Jays | TOR closer situation remains uncertain

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 09:17:00 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins isn't ready to commit to using either RP Roberto Osuna or RP Drew Storen as the team's closer in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like we'll have to wait until spring training camp to see how this battle is resolved. Osuna saved 20 games in 68 relief appearances while posting a 2.58 ERA during his rookie season, with 75 strikeouts over 69 2/3 innings. Storen earned 29 saves in 58 games for Washington last season, with a 3.44 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 55 innings before being demoted to a setup role after the Nats acquired Jonathan Papelbon. For now, keep both relievers on your radar in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna to start next year?

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 17:14:01 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna could be a starter or a reliever next season, but the Blue Jays haven't determined his role yet.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna put up a 2.58 ERA and 20 saves in his rookie season with Toronto in 69 2/3 innings and was impressive in the playoffs, too. He'd obviously be much more attractive to fantasy owners in a starting role than closing, but he'd also likely be much less of a strikeout artist (9.7 strikeouts per nine). If he moves to a starting role, he'd be worth a speculative pickup late in deep mixed league drafts.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna could start

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 18:27:33 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna could move from the bullpen to the starting rotation next season, assuming the team bolsters their relief corps during the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna posted a 2.58 ERA in 68 regular-season relief appearances in 2015, with 20 saves and 75 strikeouts over 69 2/3 innings. If he remains in the bullpen, he could continue to serve as the Jays' closer in 2016. Stay tuned.

Blue Jays | Slider not an option for Roberto Osuna

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 14:10:28 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna (finger) is having problems with a broken nail embedded in the middle finger of his right hand that isn't allowing him to throw his slider. He said it'll be hard for him to throw his slider if he's called on to pitch in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Kansas City Royals Monday, Oct. 19. Osuna could receive an anesthetic shot. "I think I will go with the changeup, and my fastball and sinker," Osuna said. "I think I should not force it because if I get hurt again, it will hurt the team. I don't want to risk injuring it any further. We have tried a lot of things and it has not gotten better yet." He struck out three of the four hitters he faced in Game 5 of the division series against the Texas Rangers with his slider.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna finished the year with 20 saves and an ERA of 2.58 in 68 2/3 innings. He's only 20 years of age and has plenty of upside as a late-inning reliever in the major leagues. Osuna was able to strike out 9.7 hitters per nine innings this year and will be a midrange closing option in 2016.

Blue Jays | Another save for Roberto Osuna

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 19:16:29 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna notched his eighth save of the season during the Blue Jays' 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The 20-year-old rookie has had an excellent season, as he owns a 2.27 ERA, a 2.44 FIP, a 0.92 WHIP and a 10.0 K/9 over 47 2/3 innings. Osuna should be owned in all seasonal leagues, and Aaron Sanchez is the saves handcuff for the Jay Birds.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna could have night off

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 09:03:43 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna is likely to have the day off Monday, Aug. 3. RP Aaron Sanchez could be used in a save situation, and RP Mark Lowe could pitch in a late-inning spot, too.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna could be rested a bit more often after the acquisition of Lowe, which makes Toronto's bullpen much stronger. Sanchez probably won't see enough save chances to be worth owning aside from the deepest of leagues.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna closes it out

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 19:11:07 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fifth save in six chances in an 8-6 win over the Seattle Mariners Saturday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna hasn't been perfect, but he looks like Toronto's best option to handle the ninth inning for now. He is worth owning in all formats as long as he is the closer.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna is fine

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 08:48:24 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna (back) reported no lingering problems Monday, July 6, after feeling pain on the lower right side of his back Sunday, July 5.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna recorded his third save in 1 1/3 innings over the Detroit Tigers Sunday, so this injury appears to be very minor. Keep a close eye on him, though. If his back injury were to worsen, Steve Delabar figures to be next in line for save chances for Toronto.

Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna picks up the save

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 16:29:36 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna picked up his second save in the last three games allowing one hit and striking out two in 1 1/3 innings against the Texas Rangers Sunday, June 28.

Fantasy Tip: Osuna is a big part of the committee Toronto is using to close out at games, and he is definitely worth grabbing if you are hunting for saves. He has 42 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings, so he can provide some value even on nights when handle the ninth inning.
