Rockies | Jon Gray has solid outing

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 21:37:39 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out eight over seven innings in a win over the Atlanta Braves Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has allowed two runs or less in three straight starts, striking out eight in all three outings. He is a viable option in NL-only leagues and a potential sleeper in DFS formats against friendly matchups.

Rockies | Jon Gray holds Phils in check

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 22:49:09 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray allowed two runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, July 8. He walked two and fanned eight.

Fantasy Tip: Gray was pulled with two on, one out and a two-run lead. Then Jake McGee allowed a single and a home run, and the Phils went on to win. Gray's ERA and won-loss record aren't great, but he's a legit force in strikeouts (9.64 K/9; 17th in baseball) and carries a strong 1.17 WHIP. Gray is a definite option in deep mixed leagues.

Rockies | Jon Gray whiffs eight in victory

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 22:31:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray allowed four earned runs, five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings in a win Monday, June 27, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He threw 67 of his 101 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has emerged as a fairly dependable fantasy option in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats and DFS play, lasting at least six innings in six of the past seven outings.

Rockies | Jon Gray throws bullpen session

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 16:04:43 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray (shoulder) threw a 14-pitch side session Friday, June 24, and said he is ready to start against the Toronto Blue Jays Monday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Gray is helping out in the strikeout department (9.7 K/9), but otherwise, he leaves a lot to be desired with a 4.80 ERA and just four wins through 12 starts. Facing Toronto is a daunting matchup, too. Owners should be selective with who they start Gray against, and he isn't overly viable at Coors Field.

Rockies | Jon Gray will make next start

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 15:25:44 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray (shoulder) said his shoulder was tired, which is why he had to leave his start after just four innings Wednesday, June 22. He expects to make his next start against the Toronto Blue Jays Monday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Gray's 9.7 K/9 is attractive, but it has been accompanied with a 4.80 ERA and just four wins through 12 starts. Going up against the Blue Jays at hitter-friendly Coors Field isn't exactly a dream matchup, especially at less than 100%. Be wary of overvaluing Gray because of his punchouts.

Rockies | Jon Gray labors in the Bronx

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 16:41:39 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray received a no-decision Wednesday, June 22, versus the New York Yankees, after lasting only four innings and giving up four runs on three hits and five walks. He also struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: After the game, manager Walt Weiss said Gray was removed early from the contest due to fatigue and a case of heavy arm, so the youngster can be forgiven for this tough road effort. He had actually been in a real nice groove, with a streak of five straight quality starts prior to today. Hopefully there are no continued issues with his arm and that he's able to make his next start.

Rockies | Jon Gray leaves start due to fatigue

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:37:44 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray (arm) was removed from his start Wednesday, June 22, versus the New York Yankees due to fatigue and a case of "heavy arm," according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: Gray lasted four innings and gave up four runs on three hits and five walks, so perhaps this was the reason for his off outing. Entering today's assignment, the former first-round draft pick had registered five straight quality starts, and thus, his owners should hope this isn't something that takes him out of his current rhythm. More information should be known soon if Gray has to miss his next start. Even so, he's proven he's deserving of a roster spot in many leagues.

Rockies | Jon Gray suffers loss Friday

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 19:34:40 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits over six innings in a loss to the Miami Marlins Friday, June 17, with two walks and four strikeouts. It was his fifth consecutive quality start.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has posted a 2.25 ERA through three outings this month, with 23 strikeouts over 20 innings. His high strikeout totals make him a solid option for DFS and he will face the New York Yankees in his next appearance Wednesday, June 22.

Rockies | Jon Gray sharp in no-decision

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 22:09:18 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray allowed three runs -- one earned -- on four hits in seven innings of work against the San Diego Padres on Friday, June 10. He walked none and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Were it not for a late meltdown by Jake McGee, Gray would've won his fourth straight start. Even without his fifth W, Gray has been 50 shades of awesome recently. In fact, if you throw out a May 19th meltdown, this is Gray's line over his last seven starts: 47 1/3 IP, 28 H, 11 ER, 11 BB, 53 K's -- that works out to a 2.09 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP to go with a 4-1 record. He's someone to consider in standard mixed leagues.

Rockies | Jon Gray fans 12 in win

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 05:22:24 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray struck out 12 batters in a 10-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, June 5. He started out the game with five straight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Gray's 5.33 earned run average is still cause for concern, no doubt fanned by a 6.65 ERA mark at Coors Field. However, he is 2-0 at Coors and 4-2 overall. Add a nearly 4-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and Gray is a pitcher worth owning in DFS leagues and most deeper-league formats.
