Rockies | Jon Gray to make debut

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 08:42:05 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray, the top prospect in the organization, is scheduled to come up from the minor leagues to make his major league debut against the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, Aug. 4. He was the No. 3 overall pick in 2013 and was 6-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) for Class AAA Albuquerque this season. Gray has 110 strikeouts and just 41 walks. He's also 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 13 walks in his last six starts.

Fantasy Tip: Gray definitely has top-of-the-rotation stuff and can make an immediate impact for fantasy owners in all leagues down the stretch. However, consistency has been an issue for him this year and it could be compounded at the major league level, especially at home in Coors Field. Consider him a pretty risky option in daily games tomorrow in his debut.

Rockies | Jon Gray coming up soon?

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 16:46:47 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray could soon be called up from Class AAA Albuquerque to make his major league debut. Gray threw six innings and gave up three hits while walking two and striking out eight in a start Tuesday, July 7, and he is 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 33 walks in 96 1/3 innings over 17 outings for Albuquerque. Gray could come up to make his major league debut shortly after the All-Star break. "He's shown the ability to dominate, and we feel like he's that type of guy," manager Walt Weiss said. "There were some mechanical things that he got ironed out -- his fastball command and the action on his slider. He's looking good."

Fantasy Tip: The Rockies' rotation has been struggling and isn't helping them climb out of the cellar in the National League West. Gray, one of Colorado's top pitching prospects, should be stashed now in dynasty and keeper leagues if he's available. He could be useful in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, too, once he comes up to the big leagues, but you'll need to pick and choose your spots.

Rockies | Jon Gray working on new pitch

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 08:55:41 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray has been working with a two-seam fastball to complement his 100 mph four-seamer, which he has struggled to locate inside on right-handed batters. Gray was lit up for seven runs last weekend, but he admitted he dealt with groin pain. He gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings in a minor league game Thursday, April 2, and said it was the best he has felt all spring.

Fantasy Tip: Gray should receive a call-up sometime this season. The hard-thrower should remain on your fantasy watch list.

Rockies | Colorado youths eyeing rotation spot

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 15:15:49 -0700

Colorado Rockies SPs Jon Gray and Eddie Butler are competing for the final rotation spot, according manager Walt Weiss. Also in the running are SPs David Hale and Christian Bergman.

Fantasy Tip: Gray and Butler have the fantasy upside, with the former being the team's top pitching prospect. Although until there is an official announcement, it is difficult to roster any of the four outside of NL-only formats, especially pitching their home games at Coors Field. It is a situation to monitor, and if Gray or Butler win the job, they could warrant a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.

Rockies | Velocity returns for Jonathan Gray

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 16:25:40 -0800

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray learned methods for staying strong throughout a professional schedule last season, and he feels like the sky is the limit entering the 2015 season. Gray's fastball lost velocity during his first full professional season, but he designed a strengthening and maintenance plan with his trainers and strength coaches from The University of Oklahoma that corrected the issues.

Fantasy Tip: Gray will compete for a spot in the rotation, but it is more likely he begins the season in Class AAA. With just 33 starts in the minors, a little more seasoning would serve Gray well. He enters the mixed league discussion, if he has a strong spring and earns a rotation spot. Otherwise, Gray is solid prospect worth monitoring for a potential recall.

Rockies | Jon Gray records ninth win at Double-A

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 15:18:38 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, with seven strikeouts, and he issued only two walks Wednesday, July 16, for Double-A Tulsa. It was Gray's ninth win for Tulsa, and he has a 3.54 ERA and 88 strikeouts on the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gray is the Rockies' best pitching prospect and could get his first taste of major-league competition later this season. His home ballpark will never provide many favors, but Gray would be worth a speculative add in all formats, if he gets called up.

Rockies | Tyler Matzek on deck?

Thu, 05 Jun 2014 05:20:27 -0700

The Colorado Rockies could look to call up SP Tyler Matzek from Triple-A Colorado Springs or SP Jon Gray from Double-A Tulsa with SP Jordan Lyles (hand) out. They could also insert P Franklin Morales back into the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: The latter two options seem to be a reach. Matzek is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 52 K's in 60 2/3 innings. He'd be worth a look in NL-only formats with some matchup value in mixed leagues.

MLB | Jonathan Gray tests positive for banned substance

Mon, 03 Jun 2013 15:15:27 -0700

University of Oklahoma SP Jonathan Gray, a candidate widely considered to be a top pick in this week's draft, failed an MLB test for the stimulant Adderall. Gray won't be penalized for the failed test as a draft-eligible player. Gray is believed to be only one of 200 draft-eligible players to have failed for any drug. One general manager said he didn't think it was a big deal that Gray tested positive because he could have a medical condition that requires the use of Adderall. There's no indication that a failure of the test will affect Gray's draft stock or negotiating power.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Gray to be taken within the top-five picks of Thursday's draft. He was initially drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school but chose to attend college instead. The right-hander made mechanical adjustments last year and can now hit triple digits with his fastball.
