Padres | Yangervis Solarte activated from DL

Sat, 21 May 2016 17:21:07 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Yangervis Solarte (hamstring) was activated from the disabled list Saturday, May 21. In a corresponding move, 2B Jose Pirela was optioned to Class AAA El Paso.

Fantasy Tip: In the majority of mixed leagues, Solarte is a low-end option. He has some positional flexibility and modest pop, though, so he can help in a pinch. But it is likely still best to leave him to cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. Since joining the Friars, he has a .271/.328/.403 slash line.

Padres | Jose Pirela playing right field

Fri, 20 May 2016 17:07:08 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres INF/OF Jose Pirela will start in right field against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir Friday, May 20, batting seventh. OF Matt Kemp is receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: C Christian Bethancourt had been penciled into the original lineup as the right fielder, as manager Andy Green looked for a way to give Kemp a day off. Pirela is just 6-for-36 at the plate and is making his first appearance of the season in the outfield, so he is not a recommended fantasy option tonight.

Padres | Alexi Amarista draws into lineup

Thu, 19 May 2016 15:16:08 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Alexi Amarista is starting at second base and is hitting eighth against San Francisco Giants SP Jeff Samardzija Thursday, May 19. 2B Jose Pirela starts on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Amarista and Pirela should split the duties at the keystone, at least until Cory Spangenberg returns from the DL. Neither infielder has much fantasy appeal, though, both with next to no power and very little speed. They barely move the needle as depth in NL-only leagues.

Padres | Jose Pirela not in the lineup

Sun, 15 May 2016 09:50:44 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Jose Pirela is not in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Zach Davies Sunday, May 15. 2B Adam Rosales will start at second base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Rosales has only three hits in 23 at-bats this month and probably can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Padres | Brett Wallace not starting

Wed, 11 May 2016 14:19:43 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Brett Wallace is not in the starting lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 11. 2B Adam Rosales will start at third base, while 2B Jose Pirela will start at second base and is batting seventh against Cubs SP John Lackey.

Fantasy Tip: Pirela is back in the lineup despite going 0-for-5 in the first game of the doubleheader. He is hitting .200 since joining the Padres and should not be used in most fantasy leagues. Rosales has only two hits in his last 11 games and be avoided by owners.

Padres | Jemile Weeks placed on DL

Sun, 08 May 2016 12:34:48 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Jemile Weeks (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 08, due to a strained right hamstring. The Padres recalled INF Jose Pirela from Class AAA El Paso in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Adam Rosales figures to see regular at-bats in place of Weeks, who was pulled late in Saturday's loss to the New York Mets. Neither Rosales nor Weeks have any business being on a fantasy roster outside of possibly deeper NL-only leagues.

Padres | Jose Pirela sent to Padres

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 09:16:43 -0800

New York Yankees 2B Jose Pirela was traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for SP Ronald Herrera Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Pirela was a sleeper entering the season and could fit into the second base mix with Cory Spangenberg and Jedd Gyoko. Pirela hit .325 at Class AAA last season and just .230 in 74 at-bats with the Yankees. He's more of an NL-only option, but he's one to watch in spring training.

Yankees | Carlos Beltran out of the lineup

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 08:17:29 -0700

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran is not in the starting lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, Oct. 3. 2B Jose Pirela will start in right field against SP Wei-Yin Chen and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Beltran ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) likely is receiving a game off and should play in Game 2. Pirela ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is hitting only .229 in limited playing time this season and could be avoided by owners.

Yankees | Chase Headley sitting out

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 08:54:54 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Chase Headley (calf) is out of the lineup Thursday, July 9. The team recalled 3B Cole Figueroa from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned 2B Jose Pirela to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Fantasy Tip: Figueroa is in the lineup hitting ninth against Jesse Chavez. He had a .317-3-36 line on the farm, but give him a day or two to wet his toes before using him on FantasyScore.

Yankees | Stephen Drew out of lineup

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 12:58:26 -0700

New York Yankees 2B Stephen Drew is not in the lineup against Oakland Athletics left-handed SP Scott Kazmir Wednesday, July 8. 2B Jose Pirela is starting at second base and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Pirela ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is surprisingly hitting .359 (14-for-39) with a home run and five RBI in his career against left-handed pitchers. However, Kazmir is no easy matchup, and hitting near the bottom of the batting order won't do Pirela any daily favors. He remains a low-end deep sleeper on FantasyScore.
