Yankees | Bryan Mitchell needs surgery

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 09:08:32 -0700

New York Yankees SP Bryan Mitchell (toe) needed surgery on his broken toe, and he'll miss at least four months.

Fantasy Tip: This hurts the Yanks' rotation depth big time. Mitchell wasn't fantasy relevant without a rotation spot, but he was one to watch in AL-only leagues. You can dismiss that now and drop him if you were stashing him. Ivan Nova should be the first one called upon if CC Sabathia struggles in the rotation.

Yankees | Bryan Mitchell out three months

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 07:46:35 -0700

New York Yankees SP Bryan Mitchell (toe) will miss a minimum of three months with a fractured toe that is being called a Grade 3 turf toe.

Fantasy Tip: Mitchell was in the mix for the final rotation spot but should be avoided in fantasy now.

Yankees | CC Sabathia the default starter

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:16:20 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia gave up two earned runs on three hits in five innings of a rain-shortened spring game Tuesday, March 29, and appears to have won the fifth starting job over SPs Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell. Manager Joe Girardi said it was "his best outing of the spring." Girardi said it would be too tough to tell Sabathia he'd be demoted to the bullpen after 15 seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia and Nova have near identical numbers this spring, with neither that impressive, but Mitchell had stellar numbers. The Yanks are going with experience and the guy with the biggest payroll number. That doesn't necessarily mean he's the best option for fantasy owners. Sabathia had a promising finish to 2015, but it's fair to wonder how much he has left in the tank. He's mainly an AL option these days.

Yankees | CC Sabathia's role uncertain

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 06:26:40 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia believes he will be part of the starting rotation this season but has a 7.36 ERA during spring training. Sabathia is competing with SPs Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation because Sabathia would not have much fantasy value if he is not starting. Sabathia could be an AL-only option if he does win the starting job but probably can be avoided in mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia competing for rotation spot

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:01:03 -0800

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are expected to compete for the No. 5 starting rotation spot this spring. Sabathia went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA and gave up a career-high 28 home runs in 167 1/3 innings last season and will turn 36 in July. SP Bryan Mitchell will also be in the competition.

Sabathia did finish 2-1 with a 2.17 EAR in five September and October starts and gave up just two homers in 29 innings. Sabathia said last December he is already "light years ahead" of where he typically is in the offseason, and he expects to report to camp lighter than he has in years.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia clearly isn't the ace pitcher he once was, but if he comes into camp lighter, stronger and more determined, he could be useful for stretches in the New York rotation. His decreased velocity and penchant for allowing home runs is a serious concern, so he's nothing more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Yankees | Bryan Mitchell to throw sim game

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 09:18:58 -0700

New York Yankees SP Bryan Mitchell (nose) will throw a simulated game early this week, and he could be stretched out as a starter to rejoin the starting rotation, especially after the injury to SP CC Sabathia (knee).

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Mitchell ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) in AL-only leagues. He's one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects. If he does rejoin the rotation, you should look to avoid him in his first start back after taking a liner off the face.

Yankees | Bryan Mitchell placed on DL

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 09:34:28 -0700

New York Yankees SP Bryan Mitchell (nose) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Aug. 18, with a concussion and nasal fracture. SP Chris Capuano was called up from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Mitchell's ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) injury was a scary one, but he's lucky it wasn't much worse. There's a chance he could return next month and make another spot start or two, but his fantasy value for the remainder of the season will be minimal. He's the Yankees' second-rated pitching prospect behind Luis Severino, though, so he's worth stashing in dynasty leagues.

Yankees | Bryan Mitchell expected to go on DL

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 09:00:07 -0700

New York Yankees SP Bryan Mitchell (nose) is expected to land on the disabled list after being hit by a line drive during his start Monday, Aug. 17, and suffering a small nasal fracture. Mitchell is considered the Yankees' second best pitching prospect behind SP Luis Severino, and he was making a spot start in order to give the rest of the rotation an extra day of rest.

Fantasy Tip: Mitchell ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) could re-enter the rotation down the road, but he's unlikely to make more than a handful of starts for the remainder of the season, so his fantasy value is limited in all formats.
