Mariners | Team lacks alternatives to play center field

Sun, 04 May 2014 12:50:45 -0700

One of the reasons why the Seattle Mariners decided to keep struggling OF Abraham Almonte on the major league roster is because they lack alternatives to play center field. Club officials feel OF Michael Saunders is better suited to play a corner outfield position, while minor league OF James Jones has limited experience above Double-A. Almonte is batting .198 with a .248 on-base percentage this season and leads the majors with 40 strikeouts in 106 at-bats.

Mariners | Abraham Almonte learning while staying aggressive

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 09:09:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Abraham Almonte is learning the game as he goes this season, with manager Lloyd McClendon giving him the freedom to make his own decisions at the plate and on the base paths. "It's a necessary evil," McClendon said. "The only way he's going to be an instinctive player is to rely on his own talents. I liken it a lot to when I used to go see my son play high school baseball. There's two outs and there's (a) 3-0 (count) on the hitter, and the coach is giving signs and there's nobody on base. I'm like, 'What the hell? Let the kids play.'" However, assistant coach Andy Van Slyke continues to stress to Almonte that he should stay aggressive while at the same time understanding each game situation and what it dictates.

Mariners | Stefen Romero survives wave of cuts

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 18:35:27 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Stefen Romero is one of six remaining outfielders in camp for the team after the latest cuts. With OFs Dustin Ackley, Corey Hart, Michael Saunders and Abraham Almonte appearing to be locks, it looks like the final battle will be between Romero and Endy Chavez. Romero might have a leg up since he is already on the 40-man roster, and no one would have to be removed, as is the case with Chavez. Romero has also started to take grounders in the infield, trying to be more versatile to help his cause.

Mariners | Abraham Almonte being used in CF

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 11:52:54 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Abraham Almonte made his 13th start of the spring in center field Tuesday, March 18. OF Dustin Ackley is lined up as the starting left fielder, and OF Michael Saunders has made 10 starts in right field, one in center and one in left. OF Corey Hart (knees) is being brought along slowly after two knee surgeries last year.

Fantasy Tip: Keep Almonte in mind in AL-only leagues. He packs some power in his short and stocky frame and can steal 20-plus bases over a full season. He hits best from the left side, though, so it'll be interesting to see if he falls into some sort of platoon in Seattle.
