Redskins | Rob Kelley fine with committee

Fri, 20 Oct 2017 18:30:38 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley said it "wouldn't be beneficial" for him to receive all the carries, especially with RB Chris Thompson playing so well. "Whatever Coach needs, I'm there for," Kelley said. "If he wants me to run it the whole time, I can run it the whole time. If he wants to split carries, I can do that, too."

Fantasy Tip: Kelley can be left on the bench in Week 7 against the stingy run defense of the Philadelphia Eagles, and although Kelley's return will take some touches from the rest of the backs, Thompson remains a viable flex option in PPR formats.

Redskins | Chris Thompson chasing history

Tue, 17 Oct 2017 12:57:15 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson is on pace to become the fourth running back ever to rush 100 times and eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in one season. Thompson must average 5.8 carries and 60.0 receiving yards per game.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2017 season so far. He has turned into a reliable every-week starter and a household name in PPR leagues, pacing all running backs with 340 receiving yards. Either sell Thompson high or hang on to him and enjoy the ride.

Redskins | Chris Thompson logs 20 touches

Sun, 15 Oct 2017 18:46:41 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson finished with a career-high 20 touches against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6, rushing 16 times for 33 yards and catching four passes for 105 yards.

Fantasy Tip: With Rob Kelley sidelined, Thompson was leaned on heavily as a runner and receiver. He has been Washington's most explosive back all year, and he will elevate to RB2 status in PPR formats if he continues to touch the ball this much moving forward.

Redskins | Chris Thompson victim of game flow

Tue, 03 Oct 2017 17:40:45 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson was not as involved in the passing game in Week 4 due to game flow and the lack of pass attempts (24) in general, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson, who had been so electric for the team through the first three games, managed six carries but was only targeted twice. Washington did not trail against the Kansas City Chiefs until the final 4:51 of the game, so it does somewhat explain the lack of targets. Thompson figures to push for about 10 touches in most games moving forward, but the number of big plays he created through three weeks was bound to dry up sometime. Owners should view him as a high-upside flex.

Redskins | Rob Kelley still the 'lead dog'

Tue, 26 Sep 2017 09:33:48 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley (ribs), who is expected to practice on a limited basis Wednesday, Sept. 27, will remain the team's No. 1 running back when healthy, despite the emergence of Chris Thompson has a regular big-play threat. "(Kelley) got (78) yards rushing in a quarter and a half in Week 2, so he's still our No. 1 lead dog. … (Thompson is) going to keep pushing me for (more carries), but he's not going to get them," head coach Jay Gruden told reporters Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Washington has been consistent in not wanting to overwork the 190-pound Thompson, while the 233-pound Kelley is built to handle the punishment that comes along with an early-down workload better. Samaje Perine suffered a bruised hand and fumbled on the same play in the team's Week 3 victory, the latter of which probably temporarily squashed any hopes he had of overtaking Kelley in the near future. When Kelley is cleared, he can be viewed as a low-end RB2/high-end flex option in fantasy.

Redskins | Chris Thompson piles up 188 yards

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 20:59:36 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson had eight carries for 38 yards and six catches for 150 yards and a touchdown in a 27-10 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson now has four touchdowns in three games, and while he won't have this many receiving yards on a routine basis, he is a viable flex option in PPR formats because of his steady role in the passing game.

Redskins | Chris Thompson practices in full

Fri, 22 Sep 2017 13:50:43 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) was able to practice in full Friday, Sept. 22, and he has been removed from the injury report ahead of Week 3 against the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his full bill of health, and Rob Kelley's questionable status, Thompson is still expected to be the third-down back against the Raiders. The coaching staff feels he is a bit smallish and unable to take the full beating of being the featured back, so look for Samaje Perine to be relied upon more if Kelley is out, limited or needs a rest.

S Deshazor Everett (knee), OT Morgan Moses (ankle, shoulder), WR Josh Doctson (hamstring), C Spencer Long (knee), RB Chris Thompson (back) and OT Ty Nsekhe (groin) each practiced in full and were removed from the injury report.

Redskins | Chris Thompson practices Thursday

Thu, 21 Sep 2017 16:11:13 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Chris Thompson (back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson should have his normal role in Week 3 and will be used in the running and passing game. He would have a bigger role if Rob Kelley is inactive and can be at least a flex option in point-per-reception leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson takes part in practice

Wed, 20 Sep 2017 15:20:40 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson appears to be on track to play in Week 3 and could receive a bigger role if Rob Kelley is not able to play. He recorded 106 total yards and two touchdowns in Week 2 and should be a solid flex option in point-per-reception leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson likely to see expanded role

Tue, 19 Sep 2017 09:14:21 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson is expected to see more work going forward, but head coach Jay Gruden warned reporters the team doesn't "want to go crazy with him" given his 5-8, 190-pound frame.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson has turned six carries and seven catches into 162 total yards and three touchdowns through two weeks, giving the offense quite the spark despite limited work. He's definitely worked his way into flex consideration in all formats, but owners need to understand Gruden doesn't want him becoming a full-time back, so a Darren Sproles-like role is probably the best they can hope for from him.

Redskins | Chris Thompson finds end zone twice

Sun, 17 Sep 2017 21:27:44 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson rushed three times for 77 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Week 2 at L.A. Rams and he added three catches for 29 yards on seven targets.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson is certainly paying dividends for fantasy owners as an RB3 or flex fantasy play in PPR formats. He'll look to keep it going in Week 3 against the Raiders on Sunday Night Football.

CB Bashaud Breeland (elbow), WR Jamison Crowder (hip), LB Junior Galette (hamstring), C Spencer Long (knee), OT Morgan Moses (ankle), SS D.J. Swearinger (back) and RB Chris Thompson (back) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Redskins | Chris Thompson not on injury report

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 15:19:01 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 15, and is not on the injury report for Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson should receive most of his playing as a third-down back and will be involved in the passing game. He can be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues but may not be a great option in standard leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson on the field Thursday

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 13:39:20 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson did most of his damage in the passing game in Week 1 where he posted for 52 receiving yards and one touchdown. He will continue to be third-down back for the Redskins and can be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson fully participates

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 13:47:47 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) was able to practice in full on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson picked up just four yards on three carries, but his biggest contribution was in the pass game where he added 52 yards on four catches with a touchdown. He is a decent flex option in PPR formats heading into Week 2 against the Rams, with lesser value in standard leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson inks two-year extension

Tue, 05 Sep 2017 09:49:42 -0700

Correcting a previous report, Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson signed a two-year contract extension Tuesday, Sept. 5. While some of the financial details were undisclosed, the deal reportedly include $6.5 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson is the Redskins' unquestioned third-down option and has openly campaigned for more of a role on early downs. Whether he gets that chance remains to be seen with Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine in front of him, but Thompson is a worthy RB4 option in PPR formats.

Redskins | Chris Thompson signs extension

Tue, 05 Sep 2017 08:17:42 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson signed an extension Tuesday, Sept. 5, with the club. Terms weren't disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: He has predominately been a third-down option, but his role is expected to expand a bit. He's a depth back with some upside in PPR leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson expects bigger role

Mon, 22 May 2017 06:00:08 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson is expecting a bigger workload this season because he proved to head coach Jay Gruden that he was durable.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson is a sneaky PPR option after he posted 5.2 yards per carry and a 68-356-3 rushing line with a 49-349-2 receiving line. He'll play second fiddle to Rob Kelley, but he could be a solid RB4.

Redskins | Chris Thompson receives tender

Wed, 08 Mar 2017 11:31:47 -0800

Washington Redskins restricted free-agent RB Chris Thompson has received the second-round tender offer, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson should serve as the third-down back for the Redskins in 2017 and will be used in the passing game. He probably should be considered a No. 4 or No. 5 running back in most leagues but may have more value in point-per-reception leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson makes his four touches count

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 16:16:37 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson rushed three times for 20 yards and caught one pass for 17 yards, but he accounted for each of his team's first two touchdowns in a Week 16 win over the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: While this performance didn't come out of thin air, Thompson hasn't been useful in fantasy in about two months. It's a bummer for Rob Kelley owners, however, as it could be argued Thompson's first touchdown (from seven yards out) or Kirk Cousins' third-quarter TD on a quarterback sneak were plays Kelley usually gets the ball. Thompson is a low-end flex at best in Week 17 against the New York Giants.

Redskins | Chris Thompson wins it for WAS

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 14:28:19 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson ran three times for 38 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown with 1:54 remaining, in a 27-22 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: The Redskins running game was more by committee this week, so it's hard to tell whether Thompson will get much better carries or yardage with Rob Kelley also in the picture. Unless Kelley is hurt, Thompson may be best left on the sidelines.

Redskins | Chris Thompson will play

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 12:19:57 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (illness) is officially active for the team's Week 13 game.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson likely will handle his usual workload this week and should see time on third downs. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use and can avoid Thompson.

Redskins | Chris Thompson to maintain role

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 17:00:21 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson will continue to serve as the team's backup and third-down running back, even with RB Matt Jones expected to return in Week 10, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson has done a nice job in his role, even exhibiting shades of being a successful starting running back in the NFL one day. Unfortunately for him, Gruden is also high on undrafted rookie Rob Kelley, who will continue to operate as the team's No. 1 tailback. But Thompson at least gets to keep his role, apparently, which makes things very murky at best for Jones. Thompson is really only a flex/RB3 option in the deepest of leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson not expected to start

Wed, 26 Oct 2016 19:07:47 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson is not expected to start in Week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals in London, even if RB Matt Jones (knee) cannot start. "Chris (Thompson) has such an important role as far as third downs and his specialty role that we need him in that role, and he's not a very big guy. We don't want to give him the ball 35 times between the tackles, you know? We'd like to have a more physical guy do it."

Fantasy Tip: If Jones is unable to go, Rob Kelley is the tailback to target for the Redskins. He might be a solid sleeper as a flex option in Week 8 against a Cincinnati Bengals rush defense allowing 118.4 yards per game, 24th in the NFL.

Redskins | Chris Thompson totals 113 yards

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 17:50:06 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson rushed 12 times for 73 yards in the Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions, and he added seven receptions for 40 yards on seven targets.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson outperformed Matt Jones, who was mostly bottled up in the loss. Thompson's fantasy value is trending upward, and he is worth scooping up off the waiver wire heading into Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals if he is available. He has flex appeal for the game in London.

Redskins | Chris Thompson finds end zone

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 21:02:02 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson worked as the No. 2 tailback in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He rushed four times for 23 yards and a touchdown and he had a pair of receptions for 16 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson worked behind Matt Jones, but neither of the tailbacks had a ton of opportunities with the team falling behind and going mostly to the air on offense. Thompson, not Rob Kelley, was the backup and is the one to own in deeper fantasy leagues heading into Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Redskins | 60-40 split for Redskins RBs?

Fri, 02 Sep 2016 06:57:18 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones could receive 60% of the carries in the committee approach, and RBs Rob Kelley and Chris Thompson would account for the other 40%, in the opinion of beat writer Rich Tandler.

Fantasy Tip: Jones is a solid RB2 in PPR leagues, but his usage might be capped a bit early on unless he separates himself from the pack. Kelley has been a nice story this preseason, but he and Thompson offset one another to a degree. Both are in the RB5 conversation, but they are wild cards or handcuffs.

Redskins | Chris Thompson expected to sit out

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 13:08:25 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (undisclosed) is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Thompson is dealing with a minor injury and wants to be ready for the start of the regular season. Thompson is expected to be the third-down back this season if Matt Jones is healthy and could be a late-round option in deeper leagues.

Redskins | Keith Marshall turning heads in camp

Tue, 09 Aug 2016 18:43:37 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Keith Marshall is firmly entrenched among the team's top three backs along with RBs Matt Jones and Chris Thompson, and there is a gap between that trio and the rest of the team's running backs, according to multiple sources. Marshall's speed has been the reason he has stood out, and he ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. "He has that ability, when he does put that foot in the ground, he explodes through the line of scrimmage," offensive coordinator Sean McVay said.

Fantasy Tip: Marshall is only worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues as a late-round sleeper at this point. However, if an injury to Jones or Thompson occurs, Marshall could see plenty of meaningful touches if he continues to show well in training camp and the preseason.

Redskins | Chris Thompson should be ready for camp

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 14:10:08 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (shoulder) did not participate in offseason workouts because of shoulder surgery but should be ready for training camp. Thompson is expected to be the third-down back for the Redskins in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson should receive touches this season as long as he can stay healthy. He probably will be more involved in the passing game than the running game, which should help his value in point-per-reception leagues. He could be considered a late-round option in most leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson misses practice

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 22:36:12 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (back) missed practice Wednesday, June 15, as he deals with a back ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson is in a fight for a roster spot, so he'll need to get himself healthy for training camp. Even if he is able to nail down a spot, he is likely to serve only as the third-down back. His fantasy outlook heading into the summer is murky at best.

Redskins | Chris Thompson likely to miss workouts

Wed, 25 May 2016 19:14:49 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (shoulder) likely will not participate in any of the offseason workouts because he is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson may have to compete for a roster spot during training camp but probably will be used as a third-down back if he makes the team. Thompson could have some value in point-per-receptions but probably can be avoided in most leagues.

Redskins | Chris Thompson on shaky ground?

Thu, 05 May 2016 09:57:10 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson's spot as the backup running back to RB Matt Jones could be in jeopardy after Washington drafted speedy RB Keith Marshall in the seventh round. The Redskins could also re-sign RB Pierre Thomas, which could pose an even bigger threat to Thompson.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson, for now, is the No. 2 runner as the third-down back for Washington behind Jones. That could change quickly, though, and Thompson really is only worth a speculative late-round flier in point-per-reception leagues as a handcuff to Jones.

Redskins | Chris Thompson taking it slow

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 19:42:19 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (shoulder) is recovering from shoulder surgery, and head coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday, March 23, that Thompson might not be ready for the start of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson is working his way back and could be the No. 2 in D.C. with Alfred Morris moving on to the Dallas Cowboys. He could be worth a look in the later rounds of fantasy leagues which reward points per reception (PPR).

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 09:37:56 -0700

Redskins | Chris Thompson returns to 'Skins

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 15:12:55 -0700

Washington Redskins exclusive-rights free-agent RB Chris Thompson signed his tender offer Thursday, March 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: With Alfred Morris unlikely to return to this backfield, Thompson should have a much bigger role alongside Matt Jones in D.C. The second-year back had 35 carries for 216 yards and 35 catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns last year in 13 games. He's more valuable in point-per-reception formats, and he could have RB3/flex value in those setups.

Redskins | Washington could add running back

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 11:11:14 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris may not return next season, as previously reported, which could lead the Redskins to draft a running back or sign a free-agent running back, according to CSNWashington.com's Rich Tandler. Tandler said depth is needed at the position and that RBs Chris Thompson and Silas Redd are both coming off injuries and aren't workhorse backs.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Jones would likely be the heir apparent if Morris leaves. Jones showed flashes of starting ability in his rookie season, but he may not be the answer the Redskins are looking for. There's still plenty of time for this situation to play out, though, so stay tuned.

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (shoulder) underwent successful surgery Wednesday, Jan. 27, on the torn labrum in his left shoulder. He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson could have an increased role next season, particularly in the passing game, if Alfred Morris does not return to Washington. He came through whenever the Redskins were behind and needed to pass last season. Keep him on your sleeper radar in PPR formats.

Redskins | Chris Thompson totals 114 yards

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 18:39:58 -0800

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (shoulder, toe) rushed once for 25 yards in the NFC Wild Card Game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Jan. 10, and he added eight receptions for 89 yards. The production was nice considering he entered with a sore toe and a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson has tremendous hands out of the backfield for Kirk Cousins, and he might be a decent late-round add for fantasy players in PPR (points per reception) formats in 2016.

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones (hip) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 7, and he said that he "probably" wouldn't be able to play if the team's game was on Thursday. "I can run and do drills, but certain moves, I can't make," Jones said. "I'm still trying to find if I can play through it or not. If I do a cut and feel it, I'm going to try to see if I can push through it and tolerate it to see." RB Pierre Thomas was used as the backup to RB Alfred Morris the last two weeks, while RB Chris Thompson also saw limited work. Head coach Jay Gruden expects to make a decision on Jones either Friday, Jan. 8, or Saturday, Jan. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Jones ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is extremely risky on FantasyScore. He hasn't played in the last two weeks, and the 'Skins play the last game of wild-card weekend. Alfred Morris ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) gains some intrigue as an under-the-radar play as a result. Thomas ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and Thompson ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) are stabs in the dark as deep sleepers.
