The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch is confident he will win the starting free safety position in training camp this season. "I have kind of put the responsibility on myself and I expect to win that position," Branch said. "I feel that I'm the one the coaches are looking at." Branch is competing with S Travares Tillman, S Jarrod Cooper and S Damien Richardson to become the heir apparent to former FS Deon Grant (Jaguars).

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers RB Michael Bates, WR Karl Hankton, FS Damien Richardson and SS Jarrod Cooper are excellent special teams players, but one or more could be on the bubble because they're not big contributors on offense or defense.

The Gaston Gazette's Steve Reed reports the Carolina Panthers must clear some cap space to sign their remaining rookies. GM Marty Hurney said the team likely will have to restructure some contracts and admits thereís a possibility the team may cut some players. No names were mentioned, but players that could be candidates for either method are: DE Jay Williams, OT Melvin Tuten, LB Hannibal Navies, DT Brentson Buckner and S Damien Richardson.

Updating previous reports, the Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers have officially re-signed S Damien Richardson. He agreed to a three-year deal last week.

Updating last night's story, the Gaston Gazette reports the Carolina Panthers have reached a three-year contract agreement with free agent DB Damien Richardson. He becomes the first free agent this off-season to re-sign with the Panthers. Panthers GM Marty Hurney said the team would likely wait until after the draft before signing any more free agents.

Panthers | More On Minter

Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette Carolina Panthers SS Mike Minter said Monday that doctors have told him he shouldnít miss any more than four weeks. Coach George Seifert has not put out an official date for his return. Minter has a second-degree sprained medial collateral ligament. "A second-degree sprain means itís right before (the ligament) rips apart," Minter said. "So, thatís where it is right now." As previously reported, Damien Richardson takes over as the team's starting strong safety.

David Monroe reports for Panthers.com S Damien Richardson will step in as the team's starter at strong safety with Mike Minter sidelined with a knee injury. It is not clear how many games Minter will miss. When Minter was sidelined in 1998 with a staph infection in his left knee, Richardson started seven games in his place.

Updating last night's story, the Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers S Mike Minter left the game with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee in the second quarter. The team said he'll have more tests today, but Coach George Seifert said it's likely he'll miss at least the regular-season opener next week at Minnesota. Currently Damien Richardson and rookie Jarrod Cooper are the top backup safeties.

Panthers | 23-20 Winners

Pat Yasinskas reports for the Charlotte Observer the Carolina Panthers defeated the Cleveland Browns 23-20 Friday night. Rookie QB Chris Weinke completed 11-of-18 passes for 109 yards with one interception in one half of action. Reserve S Damien Richardson also got in on the action by picking off QB Spergon Wynn's pass at Carolina's 10-yard line with 14 seconds left to preserve the victory. Two players battling for roster spots had good games. QB Matt Lytle completed 5-of-8 passes for 115 yards. WR Dialleo Burks caught four passes for 111 yards. Lytle's 51-yard touchdown pass to Burks clinched the victory. Rookie Steve Smith had a 101-yard kickoff return for a Panthers TD.

As an update to previous reports, the Gaston Gazette reports in addition to WR Donald Hayes ($1.115 million tender) and TE Kris Mangum ($512,000 tender) the Carolina Panthers will offer the low tender offer of $512,000 to S Damien Richardson and WR Karl Hankton. Sources said the Panthers will not tender an offer to LB Spencer Reid and have not decided on whether to give one to WR Jim Turner. As far as compensation goes, Hayes would bring a first round pick if another team lands him, while the Panthers would get a seventh round pick for Mangum, a sixth round pick for Richardson and no compensation for Hankton since he wasnít drafted.
