The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers S Colin Branch is confident he will win the starting free safety position in training camp this season. "I have kind of put the responsibility on myself and I expect to win that position," Branch said. "I feel that I'm the one the coaches are looking at." Branch is competing with S Travares Tillman, S Jarrod Cooper and S Damien Richardson to become the heir apparent to former FS Deon Grant (Jaguars).

The Gaston Gazette's Steve Reed reports the Carolina Panthers must clear some cap space to sign their remaining rookies. GM Marty Hurney said the team likely will have to restructure some contracts and admits there’s a possibility the team may cut some players. No names were mentioned, but players that could be candidates for either method are: DE Jay Williams, OT Melvin Tuten, LB Hannibal Navies, DT Brentson Buckner and S Damien Richardson.

Updating previous reports, the Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers have officially re-signed S Damien Richardson. He agreed to a three-year deal last week.

Updating last night's story, the Gaston Gazette reports the Carolina Panthers have reached a three-year contract agreement with free agent DB Damien Richardson. He becomes the first free agent this off-season to re-sign with the Panthers. Panthers GM Marty Hurney said the team would likely wait until after the draft before signing any more free agents.

The Gaston Gazette reports the Carolina Panthers are very close to re-signing free agent DB Damien Richardson. He has played all four of his NFL seasons with the Panthers.

Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette Carolina Panthers SS Mike Minter said Monday that doctors have told him he shouldn’t miss any more than four weeks. Coach George Seifert has not put out an official date for his return. Minter has a second-degree sprained medial collateral ligament. "A second-degree sprain means it’s right before (the ligament) rips apart," Minter said. "So, that’s where it is right now." As previously reported, Damien Richardson takes over as the team's starting strong safety.
