Updating a previous report, Panthers.com reports Carolina Panthers FS Mike Minter (knee) officially announced his retirement Tuesday, Aug. 7. "I've thought about it long and hard. It's been a great 10 years in the NFL. I could not have spent it at a better place than Carolina with an owner like Jerry Richardson. I don't want to be at 80 or 85 percent but want to be remembered as a player who always played at 100 percent," Minter said.

Minter was scheduled to have a base salary of $2.15 million for the 2007 season, but agreed to make $820,000 instead. It is not clear as to whether Minter can earn more through incentives.

"It's a blessing to see him out there," said Minter. "I love playing with smart safeties because I don't have to worry about them. Minter left the team's training camp Tuesday night, Aug. 8, when his mother suddenly became ill at her home in Oklahoma. The cause of her death was not immediately available. Updating a previous story, the Rock Hill Herald's Darin Gantt reports Carolina Panthers S Mike Minter (calf) had said he felt he would miss two weeks of action. He seemed more optimistic after meeting with trainer Ryan Vermillion, and head coach John Fox did nothing to send it back the original direction Monday, Sept. 19. Fox said Minter was "day-to-day," and wouldn't elaborate. However, there was a sense among team officials that the injury might not be as bad as Minter originally feared.
