Cardinals | Wholesale changes for Cards

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:23:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Greg Garcia is leading off Saturday, July 23, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is hitting sixth and C Alberto Rosario hits eighth. 2B Kolten Wong, OF Matt Holliday and C Yadier Molina are out of the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has cooled a bit, but he's still hitting .314. He has upside at leadoff against Kenta Maeda. Hazelbaker and Rosario don't offer much for DFS purposes.

Cardinals | Handful of Cardinals resting in Game 2

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 14:42:52 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Aledmys Diaz, C Yadier Molina and OFs Randal Grichuk and Matt Holliday are all out of the starting lineup in Game 2 against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, July 20. SS Greg Garcia is starting at the 6 and hitting leadoff, OF Tommy Pham is starting in center field and hitting fifth, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is in left field and batting sixth and C Alberto Rosario is doing the catching and batting eighth against Padres SP Paul Clemens.

Fantasy Tip: Against Clemens, who is making his first start of the year, all Cardinals hitters are worth considering as value picks in DFS action. However, the replacements are more of deep sleepers to help you save salary cap space if you're feeling bold. Rosario should probably still be ignored hitting down in the order.

Cardinals | Jeremy Hazelbaker promoted

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 13:56:02 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker was promoted from Class AAA Memphis on Tuesday, July 19. In other roster moves, RP Miguel Socolovich was also promoted to the parent club, and C Michael McKenry was designated for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Of these three, the one with the most value is Hazelbaker, and his fantasy value has gone way down from what it was at the start of the year. Hazelbaker hit .250-7-19 before being sent to Memphis, and it is not clear how much playing time the Cards will give him with Kolten Wong, Stephen Piscotty, Matt Holliday and others already ticketed for outfield duty.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong re-joins club

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 09:29:25 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B/OF Kolten Wong was recalled from Class AAA Memphis Friday, June 17, and OF Jeremy Hazelbaker was sent down to Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Wong had a .429-4-11 line in seven games at Memphis and has begun playing center field to add to his versatility. He has a refined hitting stroke and natural power. He just hasn't found consistency at the major league level. If Wong was dropped in a league, scoop him up on upside alone. Hazelbaker was a nice story the first month, but his honeymoon period has been over for a while now. He can be dropped in most formats.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk sitting vs. Pittsburgh

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:16:25 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk is not in the starting lineup Friday, June 10. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and batting seventh against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Grichuk is 14-for-68 (.206 batting average) with just seven runs, two home runs, seven RBI and an underwhelming .657 OPS. His fantasy value is plummeting. Since Sunday, May 1, Hazelbaker has a .179/.207/.286 slash line over 58 plate appearances and shouldn't be owned outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only setups.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk not in the lineup

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 08:50:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk is not in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Zach Davies Wednesday, June 1. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker will start in center field and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Hazelbaker has slowed down after his hot start to the season and hit only .176 in May. Owners in daily fantasy leagues should be able to find better options to use in their lineups and probably should avoid Hazelbaker.

Cardinals | Matt Adams exits with back injury

Thu, 26 May 2016 17:22:33 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (back) was removed from the game against the Washington Nationals Thursday, May 26, due to stiffness in the middle part of his back. OF Brandon Moss moved from left field to first base, with OF Jeremy Hazelbaker sliding over to left field from center field and OF Randal Grichuk entering the game to play center.

Fantasy Tip: Adams was 12-for-23 (.522) in his last eight games with three doubles, three homers and nine RBI, with his batting average going from .275 to .320 over this stretch. The severity of his injury is not yet known, so check back occasionally for updates on his status.

Cardinals | Jeremy Hazelbaker starting vs. Nats

Thu, 26 May 2016 13:27:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and leading off against Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross Thursday, May 26. OF Randal Grichuk is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: After a hot start to the season, Hazelbaker has gone 7-for-43 with a .502 OPS through 45 plate appearances in May. His fantasy value is plummeting, and he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a flier in daily contests Thursday. Grichuk should continue to see the bulk of starts in center field, and while hitting higher than .241 would be a boost, he does have solid counting stats (27 runs, seven home runs, 24 RBI and three stolen bases). Grichuk remains a solid option in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk sitting vs. Arizona

Fri, 20 May 2016 14:35:40 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 20. He was removed as a precaution Thursday, May 19, after he labored running the bases. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin Friday.

Fantasy Tip: The injury is expected to be mild, and this is likely just a precautionary night off for Grichuk. It has been a slightly underwhelming start for him with a .218/.300/.395 slash line. However, his 23 runs, five home runs, 19 RBI and three stolen bases are buoying his fantasy value. Expect him to continue being a middle-tier starter in the majority of seasonal leagues. Hazelbaker has been exceptional when called upon this season (.281/.324/.583 line), and despite not owning the traditional handedness advantage, the lefty-hitting outfielder has a solid .864 OPS against southpaws this year. View Hazelbaker as a solid option in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues and decent value play in daily contests Friday.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk exits with back injury

Thu, 19 May 2016 17:29:07 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) left the game against the Colorado Rockies Thursday, May 19, because of left lower back tightness. He was replaced defensively by OF Jeremy Hazelbaker at the start of the fourth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Grichuk walked in his lone plate appearance and scored a run before exiting. If he is forced to miss additional games, expect Hazelbaker to see a good chunk of playing time in center field, which would make him worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy contests.
