Patriots | Mike Gillislee remains sidelined

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 15:43:20 -0700

New York England RB Mike Gillislee (hamstring) did not travel with the team for their joint practices with the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Tip: Gillislee has missed a lot of practice time since the start of training camp because of his injury and there is no timetable for his return. He was expected to have a role similar to LeGarrette Blount had last season, but he may have a smaller role in the offense if he does not return soon. He has a chance to be a No. 2 running back or a flex option if he receives most of the carries.

Patriots | Dion Lewis, James White listed on first-team

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 11:20:21 -0700

New England Patriots RBs Dion Lewis and James White are ahead of Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee on the team's unofficial depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Unofficial depth charts in early August before even one preseason game has been played are usually pretty meaningless, but Gillislee on the third team is notable, even if he has been sidelined for approximately a week due to a hamstring injury. Lewis and White have been with the team longer than Burkhead, which likely explains why they "rank" higher. Burkhead is still the player to target here if Gillislee can't get healthy soon. White is a RB3 in PPR, while Lewis is worthy of a bench spot in fantasy.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee sidelined

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 10:58:58 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (hamstring) has been "locked onto the conditioning field for the past few days," according to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe. Gillislee also reportedly dealt with a similar issue during OTAs.

Fantasy Tip: All aboard the Rex Burkhead train. Gillislee has been considered the favorite for the LeGarrette Blount big-back role in this offense from the moment he signed with the Patriots, but head coach Bill Belichick has a long history of "next man up" and will not be afraid to promote Burkhead if Gillislee cannot stake his claim to the job. Ideally, owners will have an opportunity to watch this play out some more, but early drafters would be wise to use a late-round pick on Burkhead and bump Gillislee down a bit.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee the new LeGarrette Blount?

Sat, 29 Jul 2017 09:24:30 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee handled the first carry at the goal line at practice Saturday, July 29, and appears to be the "top candidate" to replace LeGarrette Blount as the big back in the Patriots' offense, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Gillislee has been the favorite to fill Blount's old role from the moment he arrived in New England. For a team expected to be a juggernaut on offense and play with the lead in just about every game, that role should net Gillislee a lot of work at the goal line and in four-minute drills if he can take the job. Although Blount's franchise-record 18 touchdowns a season ago may be asking too much, rushing for 1,000-plus yards and 10 to 12 scores is not. He should be a solid RB2 option in all leagues.

Patriots | D.J. Foster on the bubble?

Thu, 13 Jul 2017 19:37:38 -0700

New England Patriots RB D.J. Foster was effective catching the ball in spring practices, but Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com believes the offseason signings of RB Mike Gillislee and RB Rex Burkhead could make it tough for Foster to make the roster.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee dealt with injury

Wed, 12 Jul 2017 15:30:34 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (undisclosed) dealt with an undisclosed injury during offseason workouts, but running backs coach Ivan Fears said it did not appear to be a long-term issue.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check on Gillislee's status once training camp starts, but he probably will be fine for the start of the season. He is expected to take over the role that LeGarrette Blount had last season, which should help his fantasy value. He will have to share touches with other running backs during the season but could be a No. 3 running back in fantasy leagues.

Eagles | LeGarrette Blount lived in red zone in 2016

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 17:57:35 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeGarrette Blount was far and away the busiest player in the league inside the red zone last year, registering league highs in carries and touchdowns inside the 20, 10 and 5. Sixteen of his 68 red zone carries, 15 of his 42 attempts inside the 10 and 12 of his 24 rushes inside the 5 resulted in touchdowns. Mike Gillislee is expected to assume the power role Blount had with the New England Patriots last season.

Fantasy Tip: Blount obviously obviously cannot count on the same kind of volume in Philadelphia that he could in New England, but it is notable for present and future owners of Gillislee. While a repeat of Blount's franchise-record 18 rushing touchdowns for Gillislee is highly unlikely, he is a very good bet to reach double figures for the first time in his career and makes for a high-upside RB3 in most leagues.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee in prominent running role?

Tue, 04 Jul 2017 07:52:41 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee is the most likely back to fill the void left by RB LeGarrette Blount's departure, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Gillislee has rushed for 5.7 yards per carry in each of the last two seasons in limited work. He'll be a matchup play, but he could be a sneaky RB3 against weaker defenses.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee the favorite to start?

Mon, 05 Jun 2017 14:29:47 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee appears to be the frontrunner for the Patriots' starting running back job, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, although he is expected to be part of a committee.

Fantasy Tip: Dion Lewis, James White and Rex Burkhead will push Gillislee for meaningful playing time in a crowded backfield. Gillislee is already an under-the-radar fantasy asset. If he does earn most of the snaps and can serve as the Pats' primary goal-line back in place of LeGarrette Blount then he will surprise some people in 2017.

Patriots | Dion Lewis' roster spot likely safe

Sun, 28 May 2017 08:08:36 -0700

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis still has a spot on the club despite the additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead this offseason, likely as a kickoff returner and reserve running back who will play 15 to 20 snaps per game, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis showed off his trademark burst in OTAs per Reiss, who believes the team will "carefully manage" the injury-prone running back. James White is the favorite to remain the team's primary passing-down back, leaving Lewis' owners in a tough spot. Consider White a solid mid-round option in PPR leagues and Lewis more of a late-round gamble.
