Packers | Have ideal RB split in mind

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 16:55:35 -0800

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said Friday, Nov. 22, that ideally the team would like RB Eddie Lacy to handle the ball 20 times, with RB James Starks getting five carries and RB Johnathan Franklin handling the ball five times. It depends on the situation. If the game is on the line, Lacy "will be the one carrying the ball."

Packers | Johnathan Franklin might get another shot

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 16:54:44 -0800

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said this week that RB Johnathan Franklin is not a forgotten man, and that the rookie would get another shot at some point. Franklin might offer a different dimension. "Obviously he's quite different than the other two, size-wise, quickness, ability to make guys miss," Van Pelt said Friday, Nov. 22. "Things like that that he brings to the table. I'll still say we'll see him before the year is out."

Packers | More focus on run game?

Tue, 15 Oct 2013 20:04:30 -0700

The Green Bay Packers ranked fifth in rushing yards per game (140.8), and with several wide receivers banged up, there might be more of a focus on the run game going forward. "I just think there's some growth there," head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday, Oct. 15. "You could see it when we got together in the spring. It was exciting once we got in pads in training camp." The Packers threw the ball 122 times in the first three games, going 1-2. In the past two games, they ran 63 times to just 62 pass attempts, winning both games. RB Eddie Lacy has run for 219 yards over the past two weeks, and RBs James Starks and Johnathan Franklin have each hit the century mark once this season.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy is the one to watch for fantasy purposes heading into the new week. He was able to shred the Baltimore Ravens for 120 rushing yards last week, averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and has emerged as a must-start RB2 or flex play in all formats. The Week 7 opponent, the Cleveland Browns, have allowed just 98.2 yards per game. However, they have given up eight rushing touchdowns, which is most in the NFL.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin benched

Mon, 07 Oct 2013 05:20:36 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin didn't receive another carry in Week 5 after he fumbled in the second quarter Sunday, Oct. 6. He has fumbled twice in his last four carries.

Fantasy Tip: The team plans to ride Eddie Lacy, which makes Franklin basically a handcuff. It's unknown how long James Starks (knee) will miss, but Franklin is in danger of falling back even further on the depth chart.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin fully practices

Wed, 02 Oct 2013 13:58:30 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin (foot) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Franklin should be owned in deeper leagues, as he may split some time with Eddie Lacy. At this point it is tough to count on Franklin because there is no way to know what his work load will be.

Packers | James Starks to miss Week 5

Wed, 02 Oct 2013 11:56:56 -0700

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB James Starks (knee) will not play Week 5 because of his knee injury.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin likely will handle the running back duties Week 5. Lacy should be in starting fantasy lineup this week because he likely will get a majority of the playing time. Franklin should be considered a flex option this week.

Packers | To go with shared backfield?

Tue, 01 Oct 2013 09:38:40 -0700

The Green Bay Packers may go with a combination of RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions. RB James Starks (knee) is injured and may not suit up for the game. "I think as far as running style, it really depends on the game plan, who you are playing and how you rotate those guys in," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "Some people try to run certain schemes with certain backs. Some people play them differently based on personnel groups. Those are game plan questions."

Fantasy Tip: Lacy is a must-start, regardless. Franklin should be owned in deeper leagues and is a risky flex play, since his workload will be a mystery.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin steps up

Mon, 23 Sep 2013 07:57:35 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin rushed 13 times for 103 yards in Week 3, while RB James Starks (knee) left the game with an injury.

Fantasy Tip: After the bye week, Eddie Lacy (concussion) should be able to return in Week 5. This will muddy the backfield situation even more. The severity of Starks' injury is unknown, but we can expect a rotation of the three for the foreseeable future.

Packers | Eddie Lacy inactive

Sun, 22 Sep 2013 08:54:12 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) has been declared inactive for the team's Week 3 game.

Fantasy Tip: James Starks was going to get the start even if Lacy was going to play, so his value will not change much. Johnathan Franklin could also receive some playing time during the game.

Packers | Eddie Lacy likely to miss Week 3

Tue, 17 Sep 2013 06:48:45 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) is likely to miss Week 3 and return in Week 5, following the team's bye week. He will likely be re-evaluated Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Fantasy Tip: James Starks will likely fill in, and Johnathan Franklin is the only other healthy running back on the depth chart. Starks needs to be added in most leagues.

Packers | Eddie Lacy has concussion

Sun, 15 Sep 2013 10:26:22 -0700

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) suffered a concussion during the team's Week 2 game.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Lacy's concussion is not known at this time, so there is a chance he could be able to play Week 3. Owners should monitor the situation to get a better idea of how long Lacy will be out. James Starks and Johnathan Franklin could be options to start if Lacy misses time, but the team could also use a committee at running back.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin expected to contribute

Sat, 14 Sep 2013 08:38:28 -0700

Green Bay Packers running backs Alex Van Pelt said the team expects RB Johnathan Franklin to contribute this season even though he did not get an offensive snap Week 1. "I think he is ready. I think he will help us this year. He'll definitely contribute on the offensive side of the ball. He's got a unique talent and ability in space. Going into that [San Francisco] game, it was probably good for him to sit and kind of watch the other guys. As the season goes on, he'll probably ask more of him," Van Pelt said.

Packers | DuJuan Harris to IR

Tue, 27 Aug 2013 10:42:24 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB DuJuan Harris (knee) has been placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the 2013 season after a negative second opinion on his knee.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy is expected to step in to start and becomes a low-end RB2 with more realistic RB3 expectations. His value makes sense in Round 5 or so in your average setup. Fellow rookie Johnathan Franklin had a tough camp but now gets a chance to showcase his natural shiftiness as a fantasy flyer.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin not impressing

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 05:10:03 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin hasn't been impressive thus far in training camp. "He looks like his numbers," a personnel man said. "He's not a real impressive guy. He plays small, and he doesn't play fast. I kind of liked him in college because he was so productive. But if you didn't know he was a draft pick, you'd think he was a free agent."

Fantasy Tip: DuJuan Harris is listed as the team's starter on the depth chart in the preseason, but Eddie Lacy still figures to be the main man in the team's backfield to open the season. Franklin's stock is dropping behind the other two backs and probably isn't worth a draft pick at this point unless you're in a very deep league.

Packers | Eddie Lacy likely to see most carries

Wed, 14 Aug 2013 09:22:50 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) is likely to see the most carries when he is healthy, followed by fellow rookie RB Johnathan Franklin, who has reportedly been adequate, but not yet special, during training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy and Franklin are your best bets for fantasy value, with Lacy getting a lion's share of the carries. On average, Lacy has been going in the fifth to sixth round on draft day in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams, while Franklin has settled into the area of the 11th or 12th round, on average.

Packers | No RBs stand out in blowout loss

Fri, 09 Aug 2013 20:22:09 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks led the team with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, against the Arizona Cardinals. RB Alex Green checked in with seven carries for 16 yards, while RB Johnathan Franklin posted six scampers for 14 yards. RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) did not play due to a hamstring injury, and RB DuJuan Harris (knee) was absent due to a knee.

Fantasy Tip: None of the RBs stood out, and the backfield remains a jumbled mess heading into the second preseason game. DuJuan Harris and Eddie Lacy are also in the mix, and he is expected to be the team's starter. However, there are questions whether Lacy could handle the every-down duties without frequent breathers.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin appears to be the guy

Wed, 31 Jul 2013 14:38:18 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy appears to be a little heavy during training camp, and RB Johnathan Franklin appears to have a chance to win the starting running back job.

Fantasy Tip: There is still a long way to go in the competition for the starting running back, but Franklin may have the early lead. Owners may have to think twice about taking Lacy as a No. 3 fantasy running back and may have to start looking at Franklin as a possibility.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin needs blocking to improve

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 18:21:39 -0700

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy puts a high value on pass protection, so RB Johnathan Franklin needs to improve his blocking if he wants to see more of the field. He has looked impressive running the ball, but he was reportedly overmatched Tuesday, July 30, in practice on a one-on-one drill which called for the running back to block a blitzing linebacker. "I felt like the outside linebackers clearly got the best of the running backs today," McCarthy said. "We were too high. We weren't sitting down. We didn't have our head up. So it'll be good tape to watch. So that's a drill I'm sure we'll do again."

Packers | Eddie Lacy not worried about weight

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 13:04:14 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy didn't reveal his exact weight, but he said his coaches have had no problem with his weight or conditioning during training camp after a picture was released Monday, July 29, that made him look bigger than normal and out of shape. "I'm at a weight where I'm comfortable at and the coaching staff feels as though they're comfortable where I'm at," Lacy said. "So as far as that's concerned, we're all on the same page."

Fantasy Tip: Lacy is a mid-round selection in drafts this year and should see plenty of work out of Green Bay's backfield. He'll compete with fellow rookie Johnathan Franklin for the majority of touches in training camp.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin may have role immediately

Fri, 19 Jul 2013 16:12:17 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin could have a complementary role on offense immediately if he does not start because he is a natural pass catcher. Franklin may not be big enough to be an every-down running back.

Packers | Rookies only RB roster locks

Tue, 02 Jul 2013 15:26:05 -0700

Green Bay Packers RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin are locks to make the roster. The rookies will be joined by some combination of Alex Green, DuJuan Harris (lung), James Starks and undrafted rookie Angelo Pease. Green and Starks have received first-team reps this offseason with the rookies studying the system and Harris sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: No back besides one of the rookies should be drafted in fantasy leagues. This will be a situation to watch during the season, but it looks like Franklin might be a better draft-day value than Lacy in what should be a shared backfield that already has to work on its running game plan.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin can take part in workouts

Fri, 10 May 2013 10:17:37 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin will be able to participate in offseason workouts since he graduated last June.

Fantasy Tip: Franklin will have a role in the offense this season because of his versatility and ability to pass protect, but it is not known how much playing time he will get. Participating in the workouts will help Franklin learn the offense faster. Interested owners could consider taking Franklin in the later rounds of their draft.
