49ers | Vance McDonald limited in practice

Tue, 04 Oct 2016 14:24:37 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (hip) was limited during practice Tuesday, Oct. 4. The 49ers only had a walk-through practice Tuesday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald missed Week 4 and checks out as a risky fantasy option until he proves his health on the field. Additionally, he's a boom-or-bust contributor who has converted two of his seven targets for touchdowns. Garrett Celek played 74 percent of offensive snaps in Week 4 and projects to continue having a large role in the offense if McDonald is out this season. Celek is nothing more than a low-end TE2, though.

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 11:31:26 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald's (hip) status for Week 4 is uncertain because of a hip injury he suffered in Week 3. Head coach Chip Kelly said McDonald is not dealing with a long-term injury, but his status will not be known until later in the week.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if McDonald will have to miss time because of the injury. McDonald has been off to a solid start this season, but owners should have other options ready in case he is ruled out.

49ers | Vance McDonald scores touchdown

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 22:36:11 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald posted a pair of receptions with 14 yards and a touchdown in the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald was nearly invisible until a second half scoring play. The tight ends weren't very involved in the San Francisco offense in Week 1. If McDonald doesn't do a little better next week you should be able to find better options off the waiver wire.

49ers | Vance McDonald emerging as weapon

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 21:01:22 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has caught five passes for 92 yards from QB Blaine Gabbert through two preseason games.

Fantasy Tip: He continues to show chemistry with Gabbert, and McDonald could end up being San Francisco's best weapon in the passing game this year. He is a sneaky TE1 candidate.

49ers | Vance McDonald impressive in opener

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 17:46:20 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald finished with two receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown in the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Garrett Celek started, but it was McDonald who resumed the connection he started to show with Blaine Gabbert late last season. Head coach Chip Kelly's offense is often able to create huge gaps down the middle of the field with his east-west run-action and McDonald has enough athleticism to take advantage of it in the way Zach Ertz did. The 26-year-old Rice product is a sleeper candidate for TE1 value on an offense lacking proven playmakers.

49ers | Vance McDonald not projected to start

Wed, 03 Aug 2016 20:21:42 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is not projected to start by beat writer Grant Cohn, citing the fact TE Garrett Celek is better at catching passes in traffic. FB/TE Bruce Miller is also in the mix, and expected to be ahead of McDonald as the 'move' tight end.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald is still expected to have a sizable role in the San Francisco offense, and a beat writer's projections shouldn't be considered gospel. Still, beat writers usually have a good handle on the pulse of a team and McDonald is apparently not standing out early in training camp as the top guy at the position which is bad for his fantasy outlook.

49ers | Bruce Miller could help out at TE

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:23:14 -0700

San Francisco 49ers FB Bruce Miller is learning the nuances of the tight end position, but he has good hands and can also help out on special teams. He might be used the No. 3 tight end behind TEs Garrett Celek and Vance McDonald.

49ers | Vance McDonald turning heads

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 19:12:42 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is a player garnering plenty of attention during minicamp, as QB Blaine Gabbert and tight ends coach Jeff Nixon each heaped praise on the tight end. "He's such a great athlete. He's smart. He does a great job in the run and pass game. He's a guy that we have to utilize. He's a mismatch nightmare on linebackers," Gabbert said. Nixon said the team is looking for McDonald to pick up where he left off last season and be a big-play tight end in the pass game.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald might not be worth drafting in most standard fantasy formats, but he could emerge as a bye-week replacement or hot waiver wire pick-up as the season progresses. McDonald still has to leapfrog Garrett Celek for the top tight end job.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) and the Niners face a tough defense in the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 15, and McDonald should be seen as nothing more than a deep sleeper at the position.

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 13:24:48 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) is day-to-day as he works his way through the concussion protocol.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) missed both days of practice earlier this week and might be a long shot to play in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns. Either way, he's not a great option for FantasyScore gamers this week.

49ers | Three Niners out of practice

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 07:07:10 -0800

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (foot), TE Vance McDonald (concussion) and WR Torrey Smith (back, toe) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't look good for any of these players against the Cleveland Browns Sunday. Hyde ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) has missed considerable time and might be shut down for the rest of the year at this point. Shaun Draughn ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) continues to see a big chunk of the backfield workload and is a great value selection on FantasyScore against the Browns. McDonald ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) and Smith ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) should be off your radar.

49ers | Vance McDonald should see more time

Sat, 05 Dec 2015 07:33:44 -0800

Fantasy Tip: McDonald ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) is coming off a 71-yard performance in Week 12 and has caught a touchdown in each of his last two games. McDonald could be an option for owners on FantasyScore looking to save some money, but he is not a great option in most leagues.

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 17:39:36 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) was not able to play in the team's Week 5 game but appears to have a chance to play in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens. Davis may not be a great option for owners since the Ravens allow the fifth fewest fantasy points to tight ends.
