Steelers | Vance McDonald working through knee bruise

Tue, 24 Oct 2017 10:01:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald (knee) appears to be on track to play in Week 8 versus the Detroit Lions despite dealing with a knee bruise, but head coach Mike Tomlin suggested the injury could affect his participation in practice this week.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald has seen his role increase ever so slightly over the last two weeks as he has become more familiar with the offense, although his three catches for 63 yards over that time hardly qualifies him for must-start status in fantasy. However, Jesse James has not caught a ball over the same time, suggesting a changing of the guard may be taking place. Neither are worth using in fantasy at the moment, however.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald appears to be getting a lot more comfortable in the system after coming over from San Francisco right before the regular season opener, and Ben Roethlisberger is trusting him more and more. The tight end is usually a big part of Pittsburgh's offensive game plan, so McDonald could be a fantasy standout if he continues to progress.

Steelers | Pittsburgh tight ends weren't cutting it

Tue, 29 Aug 2017 16:22:32 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald was acquired because fellow TEs Jesse James and Xavier Grimble were "not consistently varsity enough," in the words of head coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin did make it clear that McDonald will not be crowned the started right away and will need to compete for that job.

Fantasy Tip: Ben Roethlisberger likes his tight ends, but the Steelers now have a crowded group at tight end. McDonald is more promising, but this could turn into a committee of sorts.

49ers | Vance McDonald traded to Pittsburgh

Tue, 29 Aug 2017 09:24:19 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick Tuesday, Aug. 29, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: This move clears the way for rookie George Kittle to start. McDonald was rumored to be on the block about as soon as the team laid eyes on Kittle during offseason workout, but that talk seem to disappear during the preseason. Either way, Kittle is now clearly on the dynasty radar and could enjoy some back-end TE2 value down the road.

Tue, 29 Aug 2017 09:21:09 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Fantasy Tip: This is the rare NFL trade made around cut-down day that could actually have some impact in fantasy. McDonald gives Steelers a hint of what they were hoping to get with Ladarius Green as an athletic specimen who can stretch the seam. Once he gets familiar with the Steelers' offense, he could push Jesse James to start and be a serviceable TE2 in fantasy.

49ers | Vance McDonald drawing GM's attention

Tue, 29 Nov 2016 19:14:30 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has the interest of general manager Trent Baalke thanks to his blocking abilities and his averaging 17.4 yards per catch this season.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald is doing well, as he is ranked second in yards per catch behind Rob Gronkowski. Still, unless QB Colin Kaepernick continues to improve, McDonald could be in a dead end for this season. He may be worth holding onto in keeper or dynasty leagues.

He has been targeted six times in each outing. He has re-emerged as a decent streaming option in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

49ers | Vance McDonald limited in practice

Tue, 04 Oct 2016 14:24:37 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (hip) was limited during practice Tuesday, Oct. 4. The 49ers only had a walk-through practice Tuesday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald missed Week 4 and checks out as a risky fantasy option until he proves his health on the field. Additionally, he's a boom-or-bust contributor who has converted two of his seven targets for touchdowns. Garrett Celek played 74 percent of offensive snaps in Week 4 and projects to continue having a large role in the offense if McDonald is out this season. Celek is nothing more than a low-end TE2, though.
