Rams | Tavon Austin to be in similar role

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 06:51:03 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will be used in a similar role as he has in the past, according to general manager Les Snead. "We haven't figured out how much he evolves as a receiver in this offense because he hasn't had a chance to play," Snead said. "Plan to see him used very similarly to how he's been used in the past. By that I mean, he's scored as a receiver, he's scored as a running back, he's scored as a returner. That's why we like him. He threatens the opposing team in many different ways. We've just got to get him healthy."

Fantasy Tip: Austin offered a glimmer of hope of justifying his No. 8 overall pick status in 2015 with a 52-473-5 receiving line and a 52-434-4 rushing line. He's a small receiver that you can do a lot of things with, but the previous regime couldn't make him enough of a factor. He has WR5 viability, but it's unlikely he'll be a consistent fantasy source.

Rams | Tavon Austin not practicing this week

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 17:01:53 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will not participate in practice this week because of a hamstring injury. Head coach Sean McVay said the team is not sure if Austin will play in any preseason games.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Austin will be ready for the start of the regular season. He probably will be the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver for the Rams this season and may see fewer targets because of the addition of Sammy Watkins. He could be a No. 5 receiver in some leagues or a waiver wire option during the season.

Rams | Tavon Austin still has role in Rams' offense

Sat, 12 Aug 2017 10:47:14 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin "definitely has a place" even after the team acquired WR Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 11, according to general manager Les Snead.

Fantasy Tip: The Rams' top three receivers figure to be Watkins, Robert Woods and rookie Cooper Kupp, so Austin will likely be limited to four-wide sets as a receiver. However, he could see more action as a returner and the team could try to use him to fill the scatback role they had previously envisioned for Lance Dunbar. Regardless, it's hard to envision Austin seeing enough time on offense this year to be relevant in fantasy.

Rams | Tavon Austin not on the block

Fri, 11 Aug 2017 11:25:48 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin isn't expected to be traded after the team acquired Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Austin's fantasy stock pretty much plummets with Watkins' arrival, but the Rams are doing the right thing by keeping him around since their new addition is such an injury risk. As long as Watkins is healthy, Austin figures to remain a bit of a gadget player and someone they may look to use a bit more in the role they had planned for Lance Dunbar, given the fact Austin has played running back from time to time. With that said, Austin can be left on the wire in most normal-sized leagues.

Rams | Tavon Austin cleared for full practice

Sun, 30 Jul 2017 12:47:21 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin was a full participant at practice Sunday, July 30, after being cleared following offseason wrist surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Austin is expected to fit into the DeSean Jackson role of new head coach Sean McVay's offense this season. Some of Austin's metrics, such as average separation and catch rate, did compare favorably to Jackson's last year, and Austin doesn't lack for speed either. He's a hard sell as anything more than a WR5 in a bad offense, but he has enough upside to beat that label if Jared Goff can make solid progress in his second year.

Rams | Tavon Austin used as deep threat

Sat, 29 Jul 2017 18:53:17 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (wrist) was a full participant in practice Saturday, July 29, and he lined up outside and ran deep routes on several plays.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Sean McVay is indeed going to have Austin fill a DeSean Jackson-like role in the offense. However, that still makes him a boom-or-bust WR4.

Rams | Mike Thomas eyeing big role

Fri, 09 Jun 2017 21:18:38 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Mike Thomas has been seeing most of the first-team reps in place of WR Tavon Austin (wrist) during OTAs, and Thomas said he believes the coaching staff understands the potential he brings to the offense.

Rams | Tavon Austin to sit out OTAs

Fri, 05 May 2017 12:34:36 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (wrist) will miss OTAs after undergoing surgery on his left wrist but is expected to be ready for training camp, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: It's a setback for Austin - a player new head coach Sean McVay wants to use in the same way he did DeSean Jackson in Washington. Austin's absence should open up more reps for rookie Josh Reynolds, who is perhaps the team's best downfield threat anyway.

Rams | Tavon Austin to become more of a deep threat?

Fri, 05 May 2017 10:14:09 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to establish himself as more of a downfield threat, similar to what DeSean Jackson for new head coach Sean McVay when he was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has carried the ball 116 times (nearly three times more than any other receiver) and caught 75 passes behind the line of scrimmage (tied for second among receivers) over the last three years. Now, it appears McVay wants to see what the former first-round pick, who ran a 4.34 prior to getting drafted No. 8 overall in 2013, can do down the field. Expecting Austin to emulate Jackson may be too high of a standard to reach, but it does suggest McVay will use him more logically than Jeff Fisher ever did.

Rams | Tavon Austin could move outside

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 21:15:38 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin could move to the outside or be utilized more in the run game if WR Cooper Kupp is a better option as a slot receiver, according to beat writer Rich Hammond.

Fantasy Tip: The Rams have always struggled to find the best way to take advantage of Austin's game-changing speed, and the result has been an unreliable fantasy option dependent on breaking a long score. Austin is a WR4 who can be used as a Hail Mary flex play during bye weeks.

Rams | Tavon Austin gets into end zone

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 18:44:22 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted two grabs for 14 yards on seven targets in the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and he added a 30-yard rushing score.

Fantasy Tip: Austin is a dynamic playmaker with speed to burn, but the Rams haven't been able to get him out into the open very much. If they can get better offensive line play and more stability at the quarterback position, Austin and Gurley would be the biggest beneficiaries going forward.

Rams | Tavon Austin fully practices

Fri, 09 Dec 2016 15:51:59 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 9, and is not on the injury report for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Austin was not able to play in the last game but should see his normal playing time in Week 14. He has been held to under 50 yards in each of the last four games and probably should be avoided in a majority of the leagues.

Rams | Tavon Austin practicing Thursday

Thu, 08 Dec 2016 19:28:03 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Austin is on track to return after missing Week 13. He has underwhelmed all year, but he could be worth a roll of the dice in DFS games against an Atlanta defense that has allowed the most passing yards and second-most passing scores.

Rams | Tavon Austin ruled out for Week 13

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 08:11:48 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) will not play in Week 13's game against the New England Patriots, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Austin was listed as doubtful on the injury report and did not practice at all during the week. Kenny Britt should see most of the targets for Los Angeles and should be viewed as a WR3 or flex option in most fantasy leagues, while Todd Gurley and Brian Quick should also see more involvement in the passing game. Gurley is a viable starting option in all formats, while Quick is worthy of consideration as a flex player in deeper seasonal leagues.

Rams | Tavon Austin doubtful for Week 13

Fri, 02 Dec 2016 15:09:59 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 2, and is listed as doubtful for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Austin was not able to practice this week, so there is a good chance that he will miss Week 13. Owners should still check on his status closer to game time but should have other options available. Kenny Britt probably will receive most of the targets among receivers and can be a No. 3 receiver or flex option in fantasy leagues. Todd Gurley and Brian Quick can also be more involved in the passing game. Gurley should be a starting option in all leagues, while Quick probably can only be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Rams | Tavon Austin still not practicing

Thu, 01 Dec 2016 17:24:05 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 1.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Austin will play, but given his lackluster production in recent weeks, you may want to leave him on your bench in Week 13 regardless of his status.

Rams | Tavon Austin sits out

Wed, 30 Nov 2016 17:26:37 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Austin is in any danger of missing the team's Week 13 game, so owners will need to check on his status later in the week. He has been limited to eight catches in his last four games and has not posted more than 45 yards in any of those games. He could be a flex option in very deep leagues but can be avoided in most leagues.

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 13:30:36 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin caught two passes for 19 yards and carried the ball twice for 10 yards in Week 10 against the New York Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Austin is not playable at this point ... he cannot create plays on his own accord and is transparently used by the coaching staff.

Rams | Tavon Austin talks dissappointing season

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 08:15:49 -0800

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin said there is only so much he can do and that defenses are scheming to take him out of the game plan. Austin has 37 catches for 316 yards with two touchdowns and 63 rushing yards on 14 carries in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: This is partly true. Austin is terrible at creating his own yardage. A player so explosive should not have a career average of 9.1 yards per reception. He is a week-to-week lineup decision based on the matchup. Gamers in Week 10 can flex him with a mild degree of confidence.

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 10:45:31 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin caught 10 passes for 57 yards and one touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 7.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has been targeted at least 10 times in two of the last three games but has been held to under 60 yards in six of the seven games this season. He will continue to be the No. 1 receiver for the Rams and can be a No. 3 receiver or a flex option for owners.

Rams | Tavon Austin does little in loss

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 18:25:33 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted three receptions for 24 yards in the Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions, and he added three runs for just two yards.

Fantasy Tip: The team wants to get the ball into Austin's hands, but Austin just cannot get into open spaces to take advantage of his blazing speed. He is only worth a look as a WR4 in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

Rams | Tavon Austin totals 10 touches

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 22:52:08 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted seven receptions for 59 yards on 10 targets in the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills and he added three runs for 26 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has 85 or more total yards from scrimmage in two of his past three games, as the team is starting find more ways to get the ball into the dynamic and versatile receiver's hands. Still, he remains more of a low-end WR3 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

Rams | Tavon Austin, Case Keenum not in sync

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 23:33:03 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin has been targeted 35 times this season, which ranks in the NFL's top 20, but he has just 16 receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown. QB Case Keenum has absorbed some of the blame for misfiring on throws but sounds determined to get Austin involved, saying, "Anytime we've got him in the open field, I've got to get him the ball."

Fantasy Tip: Los Angeles' passing attack has been anemic, and Austin's inability to make things happen down the field is part of that. Until he and Keenum get on the same page, Austin is no better than an inconsistent WR4.

Rams | Tavon Austin goes backward

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 22:13:09 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin had just two receptions for 14 yards on six targets in the Week 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals and he had one run which netted minus-6 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Austin is a dynamic and versatile playmaker who has the tools to be an asset to fantasy owners, but for whatever reason the Rams fail to use him correctly. He is only worth keeping around as a WR4 in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

Rams | Tavon Austin will play

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 12:31:57 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) is officially active for the team's Week 4 game.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has posted decent numbers in the first three weeks of the season and has been targeted at least eight times in each of the games. He should continue to be one of the main targets in the team's passing game and can be a flex option for owners.

Rams | Tavon Austin will play Sunday

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 07:21:35 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) will play in Week 4's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Austin had been listed as questionable on the club's most recent injury report but was a full participant in practice Friday, Sept. 30, after being limited in the two practices prior to that. He has been targeted 29 games through the first three games and should be viewed as a boom-or-bust WR3 option.

Rams | Tavon Austin listed as questionable

Fri, 30 Sep 2016 18:41:14 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Friday, Sept. 30, and is listed as questionable for Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Double check his status on Sunday, but Austin looks like a good bet to suit up. The speedy receiver can be big-play dependent, but with 29 targets through three games, the Rams are looking his way enough to take a chance on him as a WR3.

Rams | Tavon Austin still limited

Thu, 29 Sep 2016 20:11:34 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Austin can make big plays as a receiver, runner and returner, but he is a boom-or-bust WR3.

Rams | Tavon Austin limited in practice

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 18:56:08 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has been targeted frequently, and occasionally he finds the ball on his hands in rushing opportunities, too. The Rams understand they have a dynamic playmaker, and are trying to get him the ball more. For now, he is more of a WR4 in most fantasy leagues because the targets are nice, but he has a low conversion rate as far as catches are concerned. Until that improves, he is more of a depth fantasy player than a centerpiece.

Rams | Tavon Austin doing little with a lot

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 13:09:03 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is seventh among wide receivers with 21 targets through two weeks, but he has caught only nine passes for 63 yards.

Fantasy Tip: The volume is there, but Austin just hasn't gotten things going yet. The Rams as a whole have been stagnant on offense, which is a large part of Austin's early struggles. He has more value in return yardage leagues, but don't give up on him just yet. He faces a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense that has yielded five touchdowns to wide receivers this year.

Rams | Five touches for Tavon Austin

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 22:54:02 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin collected four receptions for 13 yards in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers and he added one run for two yards.

Fantasy Tip: It was an ugly night for the Rams offense, and Austin couldn't shake free in the mostly horizontal offensive attack. He has WR2 ability in fantasy leagues, but with shaky quarterback play he is more like a WR4 right now.

Rams | Tavon Austin lands huge extension

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 15:38:32 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is close to signing a four-year extension worth $42 million, including $30 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: For an offense bereft of playmakers in the passing game, the Rams had little choice but to lock up Austin. Still, it seems like a pretty good chunk of change for a receiver who had as many carries last year as receptions (52 apiece, both career highs). The size of this contract suggests Los Angeles will continue finding ways to feed him the ball into space in order to take some pressure off Todd Gurley. While he figures to be inconsistent in fantasy again this year, he's a serviceable WR3 in most leagues.

Rams | Pharoh Cooper locked into starting role?

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 20:24:08 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Pharoh Cooper, WR Kenny Britt and WR Tavon Austin are currently the top three receivers, head coach Jeff Fisher said.

Fantasy Tip: The Rams' run-first offense won't do him any favors, but with Cooper set to be on the field in three-receiver sets, he could be worth a late-round gamble in PPR formats.

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (leg) was dehydrated a suffered a leg cramp during practice Sunday, July 31, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Fantasy Tip: If you are an Austin owner, you can breathe a sigh of relief. He came into his own as a versatile offensive weapon last year, and you should feel confident drafting him as a WR3 in 2016.

Rams | Coach has high hopes for Tavon Austin

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 10:08:05 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin may be able to double his reception totals in 2016 because opposing defenses will look to stop RB Todd Gurley, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Austin finished the 2015 season with 52 receptions for 473 yards and five touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Austin will have a solid role in the passing game this upcoming season, but Fisher may be too optimistic with his projection. Austin should be an attractive No. 2 or No. 3 receiver for owners because he also produces in the running game, which helps his fantasy value.

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:28:30 -0700

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 2, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has had a relatively disappointing career so far for being a top-10 draft pick. He has elite speed and play-making ability, though, and is still worth low-end WR3 or high-end WR4 consideration even with rookie QB Jared Goff.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to have his fifth-year option exercised, but the team hopes to sign him to a long-term extension.

Fantasy Tip: Austin finished the 2015 season with 473 receiving yards, 434 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Austin should be a popular target for Jared Goff in 2016 and could be a middle-round option in most fantasy leagues.

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had three catches for 16 yards and three carries for 12 yards in a 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has used his versatility to score in a variety of ways this season, but when he doesn't find the end zone, he typically doesn't have the yardage to fall back on. He is a high-risk, high-reward play at FantasyScore.

Rams | Tavon Austin does it all

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:18:54 -0800

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin finished with three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown and four rushes for 32 yards and a score in a 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: It was the second time this season that Austin ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) has run for a score and caught a touchdown pass in the same game, and he is up to 10 total touchdowns. He doesn't pile up a ton of yards, which can leave him prone to some duds, but his speed and touchdown potential give him some intriguing upside at FantasyScore.

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had just three receptions for 19 yards in the Week 14 game against the Detroit Lions, but he was effective in the rushing game with four runs for 40 yards.

Fantasy Tip: The Rams try to get the ball into the hands of Austin, but the quarterback play is so shaky that he simply isn't worth the risk anymore.

Rams | Tavon Austin leads STL offense

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had four carries for 63 yards and caught six passes for 33 yards in a 31-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Austin ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) had 60 of those rushing yards on one carry, so these numbers are a little misleading. The impoverished state of the St. Louis offense showed through in this game. Austin's price is still a little too high for most FantasyScore players.

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin was held to just one reception for five yards in the Week 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was targeted five times, and he also had one run for 16 yards while losing a fumble on special teams.

Fantasy Tip: Austin has been a boom or bust player this season. When he is bad, he is really bad. With a murky quarterback situation in St. Louis, it's best to go another way for fantasy purposes if you can help it.

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 18:52:36 -0800

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had two receptions for five yards in the Week 10 game against the Chicago Bears. He was targeted four times.

Fantasy Tip: Austin was bottled up, as the Bears took away the downfield plays. With the addition of Wes Welker to the offense, there will be even fewer targets to go around for the wide receiver corps in St. Louis.

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had four catches for 15 yards, and he had eight carries for 66 yards in a 21-18 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: Austin ($6,700, 13.6% of cap) has been doing enough damage as a receiver and a runner to stay relevant, but there are certainly safer options available in the same price range at FantasyScore.

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin had four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown and three carries for 21 yards and a touchdown in a 27-6 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8, and he now has a career-high seven touchdowns for the year.

Fantasy Tip: Austin ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) keeps finding ways to reach the end zone, but he is still a boom-or-bust option at FantasyScore because such a large portion of his value depends on him scoring a touchdown.
