Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he expects the teams high draft picks to be on the field quickly because of the needs of the team. "That's a fair statement, but it's also fair to say we had more holes coming into it, or more holes that we knew about, coming into this draft than we did last year," Mayhew said. "We do expect a lot of those guys, especially guys that we took early, to be on the field pretty quickly." First-round pick DE Ezekiel Ansah was drafted to replace DE Kyle Vanden Bosch. Second round pick CB Darius Slay will compete with CB Bill Bentley. Third round pick OG Larry Warford will likely replace OG Stephen Peterman.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he is not concerned that Brigham Young DE Ezekiel Ansah has only played organized football since 2010 because Ansah was a fast learner when Schwartz coached him in the Senior Bowl. "It was interesting to see him being able to grasp new concepts. It's one thing when you're out of school for three or four years and you can sort of learn as you go, but to see him go in and improve every day in practice, and have the game that he had -- he had a very productive game -- I think he went a long way to answering a lot of questions about his background and his aptitude at a setting like the Senior Bowl. He put down some good game tape," Schwartz said.

Despite weighing in at 270 pounds, he has been timed in the low 4.6s in the 40-yard dash, and he has previously posted a 39-inch vertical leap. Ansah was named the Defensive Player of the Game in the Senior Bowl, and he'll look to keep up the hype with a strong showing at the combine.

"When I went out there to Mobile I heard all this buzz - (comparisons to New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul) and that kind of stuff," a scout said. "He isn't Pierre-Paul. He is not as shifty. He is not as urgent. He's not as slippery as a rusher. He's more powerful than he is a finesse guy. Pierre-Paul is a finesse guy and a power guy. I like Ansah but I think he is a project."

BYU DE Ezekiel Ansah is physically gifted but has plenty of developing to do. His bull rush during the Senior Bowl this week was rarely effective and was highly predictable other than one inside spin move. Several teams are concerned with Ansah's production this week, but others are intrigued with the upside that he possesses.
