Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said acquiring a shortstop and a left-handing-hitting outfielder are not high on the team's priority list Thursday, July 24.
Fantasy Tip: Consider this an endorsement for J.D. Martinez and Eugenio Suarez. Martinez has hit his way into being a viable mixed league option. Suarez is a fringe AL-only starter, at best.

Despite his recent success, Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Monday, June 16, that SS Eugenio Suarez will not be moved up in the batting order. "I don't want to throw him in the heart of the lineup," Ausmus said, "because there's a lot more focus in the heart of the lineup."
Fantasy Tip: Suarez has emerged as a must-start in all AL-only fantasy leagues and some deeper mixed formats, and he has been a great play in daily fantasy due to his reasonably low salary.

The Detroit Tigers are unlikely to pursue a trade for Philadelphia Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins or any other shortstop, according to sources. The Tigers like what they have in SS Eugenio Suarez.

Former major league shortstop and current Detroit Tigers coach Omar Vizquel was a believer in SS Eugenio Suarez's bat, citing a shorter swing and improved discipline against breaking balls for his success in the upper minors. It is a reason why Suarez may have shown enough improvement to help the Tigers lessen their focus on the shortstop spot.

Detroit Tigers SS Eugenio Suarez (knee) was not in the starting lineup Friday, June 6, because of his sore knee, but manager Brad Ausmus said Suarez is feeling better.

Detroit Tigers SS Eugenio Suarez (knee) is sitting out due to a sore left knee Thursday, June 5. He injured the knee on an awkward slide into second base Wednesday, June 4. SS Andrew Romine (shoulder) appeared to hurt his shoulder while diving for a ball Wednesday, but he was able to suit up and play Thursday.

The Detroit Tigers recalled SS Eugenio Suarez from Triple-A Toledo Wednesday, June 4.
Fantasy Tip: Suarez isn't the defender that Andrew Romine is, but he has much more upside with the lumber. Romine has been struggling at the plate, so Suarez could see some starts in order to get some offensive production from the position. Consider him in AL-only leagues for middle infield depth.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season. He's recovering from stress fractures in both of his shins. "We do not plan on having Iglesias back with us this year," general manager Dave Dombrowski said, adding that Iglesias "is progressing as projected, but we do not think he will be ready at any point this season." SS Andrew Romine has been starting at shortstop and his hitting just .200 with a .252 OPS in 39 games. SSs Eugenio Suarez or Hernan Perez may be called up eventually.
Fantasy Tip: You can now officially cut bait from Iglesias in all redraft leagues if you were holding out hope for a late-season return. Romine, because of his offensive deficiencies, should only be owned in AL leagues.

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said SS Eugenio Suarez was a long shot to make the team's opening day roster, which means SSs Danny Worth and Hernan Perez may battle for the starting shortstop job with SS Jose Iglesias (shins) out.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break with significant injuries to both of his shins. He could wind up missing the entire season, according to a baseball source. INFs Steve Lombardozzi, Danny Worth, Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez have been playing shortstop in spring games, but the team doesn't have a clear replacement on roster. Free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox) and Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin could be options if Detroit decides to look outside the organization.
Fantasy Tip: Terrible news for Iglesias here. Fortunately for fantasy players, he likely was left undrafted in mixed leagues, because he's a defense-first player and isn't heralded for his skills with the bat. Drew seems like a real possibility, so if you could use an upgrade at shortstop and he wasn't drafted in your league, you might want to think about scooping him up.
