Cowboys | Bates' Role Could Be Expanding

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys KR Michael Bates, who saw his first action with the Cowboys in Week 17, will likely remain the team's kick returner. Bates could also be added to the team's kickoff and punt coverage teams for Saturday's, Jan. 3, game against the Carolina Panthers.

The Bergen Record's Randy Lange reports New York Jets KR Michael Bates (hand) is probable despite two broken metacarpals in his right hand suffered last week. He will wear a soft cast in Week 10 and won't return kickoffs but should cover and block on kickoffs.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets WR Jonathan Carter got his first "touches" in a year and a half as a Jet during the Sunday, Nov. 2, game against the New York Giants, but it wasn't at wide receiver. He came in after Michael Bates broke his hand in the second quarter and returned the last four kickoffs for 95 yards.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets RB/KR Michael Bates (hand) broke two metacarpals in his right hand and will not be able to return kicks, but will play on special teams. Jets head coach Herman Edwards said Bates is likely to try to play Sunday, Nov. 9, game against the Oakland Raiders wearing a cast.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets RB/KR Michael Bates (knee) was not listed on the injury report. Jets head coach Herman Edwards said Monday, Sept. 22, that Bates would be probable. However, Bates practiced Wednesday, Sept. 24, and is expected to play Sunday, Sept. 28, against the New York Jets.

The New York Jets return game has Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells concerned because of the big-play ability of WR Santana Moss and RB Michael Bates. So far the coverage units have been decent, but they need to be better for the Sunday, Sept. 28 game against the Cowboys.
