Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz posted five grabs for 42 yards and a score in Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders, and TE Brent Celek had three receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Neither is particularly useful from a fantasy perspective, although each could safely be used as a short-term fantasy option or one-week bye replacement.

Sat, 28 Sep 2013 08:14:29 -0700

Eagles | Tight ends being used in various formations

Wed, 14 Aug 2013 14:05:59 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek played in all 21 snaps with the first-team offense in the team's first preseason game, and he was used everywhere on the field and either blocked or ran passing routes. Celek started eight plays lined up as a halfback and four times lined up as a traditional tight end. He also was lined up four times in the slot, three times split out wide and twice in the backfield to the left of the quarterback in shotgun. "In this offense, you've got to know every position, and they can just interchange you anywhere," Celek said. "And it's fun. It's a new experience. You get to do different things. Guys like it." He stayed in to block on 11 plays.

TE James Casey didn't see a single snap with the first-team offense. TE Zach Ertz should see plenty of time, too, but his development as a blocker should keep Celek as the No. 1 tight end on the team. Ertz, who didn't run block much in college, will be asked to do plenty of that in the pros. Ertz blocked out of his formations and struggled in the preseason game. The three times there was a two-tight end set, Ertz was lined up in the slot with Celek either in-line or in the backfield. Celek, Ertz and Casey have lined up in three-tight end formations at times in practice, but it's unlikely the team will use many of those formations during the season.

Fantasy Tip: Celek and Ertz are really the only two tight ends that should be considered in fantasy circles. How Kelly uses them both will likely vary, and Ertz's struggles as a blocker might help him as a receiver if Chip Kelly decides to use Celek for blocking more. Regardless, they could be interchangeable and figure to give fantasy owners relying on them headaches on a weekly basis.

Eagles | Zach Ertz finding plenty of room

Wed, 07 Aug 2013 18:04:36 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz found a way to get open frequently Wednesday, Aug. 7, during joint practice with the New England Patriots. The rookie hauled in several passes on a number of different routes.

Fantasy Tip: For now, it appears Ertz is No. 3 on the depth chart at the tight end position. However, he has shown an ability to get open, and Chip Kelly is familiar with Ertz from their days in the PAC-12 Conference. It is looking like Ertz might be the No. 2 TE on the roster as far as receiving is concerned, as Brent Celek is being more used for his skill as a blocker. Avoid Ertz for now, but remember that name if injuries bite the Eagles at tight end like they have at wide receiver.

Eagles | Confirm Jeremy Maclin injury

Sat, 27 Jul 2013 14:32:09 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles confirmed reports that WR Jeremy Maclin (knee) tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Fantasy Tip: This will effectively end Maclin's season. Riley Cooper reportedly stepped into his place during practice but probably isn't a better fantasy option than Arrelious Benn (knee) and Jason Avant if all three are healthy. The tight ends could see more targets, but the mix remains complicated with Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and Clay Harbor, and it could be a fantasy mess. This also removes a weapon from either Nick Foles or Michael Vick.

Eagles | Brent Celek considered blocking TE

Tue, 23 Jul 2013 09:29:33 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek is considered a blocking tight end in the new offensive system installed by head coach Chip Kelly, while FB/TE James Casey and TE Zach Ertz are considered primarily receivers.

Fantasy Tip: The team has plenty of depth at the position, and might use three-TE alignments at some points. For fantasy purposes, Celek will no longer be that dependable guy you go to off the waiver wire. It appears his production will be down. Casey might be the best bet, with Ertz the second option. Clay Harbor is also in the mix for a role.

Eagles | Zach Ertz not participating in OTAs

Thu, 23 May 2013 09:44:01 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz, the team's second-round draft pick, is unable to participate in organized team activities because of NFL rules until he graduates from college at Stanford.

Fantasy Tip: OTAs are voluntary, but Ertz would have some valuable time in new head coach Chip Kelly's system, which figures to feature plenty of two-tight end sets. Brent Celek will be the main tight end at Michael Vick's disposal, so Ertz doesn't figure to get enough looks to be worth a draft pick.

Eagles | Three TEs expected to receive playing time

Fri, 17 May 2013 13:24:03 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly indicated TEs Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and James Casey are expected to receive playing time during games this season.

Fantasy Tip: Even though they are all expected to see playing time, none are considered No. 1 fantasy tight ends. Celek could be worth a late-round flier that can be a No. 2 tight end because of his chemistry with QB Michael Vick. Casey should get a decent amount of receptions this season but should be taken in only very deep leagues. Casey could be a waiver wire option early in the season. Ertz is not expected to have a lot of fantasy value this season.

Eagles | Zach Ertz selected 35th overall

Fri, 26 Apr 2013 15:50:02 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Stanford TE Zach Ertz with the 35th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Ertz will join Brent Celek as another tight end for Chip Kelly in Philadelphia. He may be a better tight end prospect for fantasy football purposes than his fellow teammate, Coby Fleener, was last season for the Indianapolis Colts. It all depends on how the Eagles choose to utilize him with their new-look offense in 2013.

NFL | Poor blocking hurts Zach Ertz

Sun, 03 Mar 2013 18:05:40 -0800

Stanford TE Zach Ertz might hear his name called near the end of the first round in the NFL Draft. However, he is basically considered a wide receiver due to his poor blocking ability according to one NFL scout. "I guess it depends on the team," a scout said Sunday, March 3. "To me, he's a big, possession wide receiver. That's what he is. You put him out there, and it's like having three wide receivers on the field. He can't block at all. He has just average speed for the position, but he does run great routes, and there is something to be said for that."
